The Apostles gather. They hate the idea that they have to figure out who is getting what. In Acts Peter says:’ IS it right that we should forsake the Word of God to wait on tables?” OF course it isn’t but it makes everyone tense because now the responsibility will go back on the community. IF the Apostles aren’t going to do it who will? The Apostles give the Church parameters for candidates for this new role.- 7 good men, full of the Spirit and wisdom- these will be put in charge. The Apostles will dedicate themselves to prayer and the ministry of the Word. The 7 are Stephen, Philip, Procurus, Nicanor, Timon, , Nicholas (he was still in catechism class). Women’s Breakfast Magnificat- Suffolk County, NY Mary Undoer of Knots Please come and join us for a morning of praise, worship, and healing, as our Speaker, Maria McCormick, will share about her conversion and how the Lord called her personally to "Get out of the boat" and follow Him more deeply in her personal life and ministry. She and her husband, Sean, have been involved in the Long Island Retrouvaille community for 11 years and are currently the coordinators of the program. Maria experienced a deeper personal conversion through Retrouvaille and a deeper outpouring of the Holy Spirit through the local Magnificat Ministry to Catholic Women of which she has been a part for many years. In addition to local opportunities to share her faith, Maria has connected with Forever Changed International--a non-profit that runs a ministry to orphans in Guatemala. Maria will share how the Lord called her and her husband to respond and enter the uncharted waters of a course set for them by the Holy Spirit. The breakfast will be held at the Birchwood in Riverhead, Saturday, November 9, 9:30AM- 12:30 PM. Tickets are $30 pp. Contact Bernadette Gorycki at 631-399-1949 or at [email protected] to register.

Saint John Paul II Saint of the Day for October 22 (May 18, 1920 – April 2, 2005) Audio Player Image: Pope John Paul II | old Yankee Stadium, New York City, in October 1979 | Library of Congress Saint John Paul II’s Story “Open wide the doors to Christ,” urged John Paul II during the homily at the Mass where he was installed as pope in 1978. Born in Wadowice, Poland, Karol Jozef Wojtyla had lost his mother, father, and older brother before his 21st birthday. Karol’s promising academic career at Krakow’s Jagiellonian University was cut short by the outbreak of World War II. While working in a quarry and a chemical factory, he enrolled in an “underground” seminary in Kraków. Ordained in 1946, he was immediately sent to where he earned a doctorate in theology. Back in Poland, a short assignment as assistant pastor in a rural parish preceded his very fruitful chaplaincy for university students. Soon Fr. Wojtyla earned a doctorate in philosophy and began teaching that subject at Poland’s University of Lublin. Communist officials allowed Wojtyla to be appointed auxiliary bishop of Kraków in 1958, considering him a relatively harmless intellectual. They could not have been more wrong! Bishop Wojtyla attended all four sessions of Vatican II and contributed especially to its Pastoral Constitution on the Church in the Modern World . Appointed as archbishop of Kraków in 1964, he was named a cardinal three years later. Elected pope in October 1978, he took the name of his short-lived, immediate predecessor. Pope John Paul II was the first non-Italian pope in 455 years. In time, he made pastoral visits to 124 countries, including several with small Christian populations. John Paul II promoted ecumenical and interfaith initiatives, especially the 1986 Day of Prayer for World Peace in Assisi. He visited Rome’s main synagogue and the Western Wall in Jerusalem; he also established diplomatic relations between the Holy See and Israel. He improved Catholic-Muslim relations, and in 2001 visited a mosque in Damascus, Syria. The Great Jubilee of the Year 2000, a key event in John Paul’s ministry, was marked by special celebrations in Rome and elsewhere for Catholics and other Christians. Relations with the Orthodox Churches improved considerably during his papacy. “Christ is the center of the universe and of human history” was the opening line of John Paul II’s 1979 encyclical, Redeemer of the Human Race . In 1995, he described himself to the United Na tions General Assembly as “a witness to hope.” His 1979 visit to Poland encouraged the growth of the Solidarity movement there and the collapse of communism in central and eastern Europe 10 years later. John Paul II began World Youth Day and traveled to several countries for those celebrations. He very much wanted to visit China and the Soviet Union, but the governments in those countries prevented that. One of the most well- remembered photos of John Paul II’s pontificate was his one -on-one conversation in 1983, with Mehmet Ali Agca, who had attempted to assassinate him two years earlier. In his 27 years of papal ministry, John Paul II wrote 14 encyclicals and five books, canonized 482 saints and beatified 1,338 people. In the last years of his life, he suffered from Parkinson’s disease and was forced to cut back on some of his activities. Pope Benedict XVI beatified John Paul II in 2011, and Pope Francis canonized him in 2014. Reflection Before John Paul II’s funeral Mass in St. Peter’s Square, hundreds of thousands of people had waited patiently for a brief moment to pray before his body, which lay in state inside St. Peter’s for several days. The media coverage of his funeral was unprecedented. Presiding at the funeral Mass, Cardinal Joseph Ratzinger —then dean of the College of Cardinals and later Pope Benedict XVI —concluded his homily by saying: “None of us can ever forget how, in that last Easter Sunday of his life, the Holy Father, marked by suffering, came once more to the window of the Apostolic Palace and one last time gave his blessing urbi et orbi (‘to the city and to the world’). “We can be sure that our beloved pope is standing today at the window of the Father’s house, that sees us and blesses us. Yes, bless us, Holy Father. We entrust your dear soul to the Mother of God, your Mother, who guided you each day and who will guide you now to the glory of her Son, our Lord Jesus Christ. Amen.”

HOW CAN I FIND OUT MORE ABOUT BECOMING A LECTOR? It is very simple:

First: You must have received the three Sacraments of Initiation; Baptism, First Holy Communion and Confirmation.

Second: You need to contact Judy Perfido at 631 289 6662 or call the Parish Center and leave your name and telephone number and Judy will return your call. Once you complete the ½ day Diocesan training, you will be trained on what we do here at St. Joseph the Worker. In the beginning, you will be assigned a mentor, who will be scheduled with you and will guide you along during the mass if needed.

You have to follow a schedule which is given out in three month intervals. Preferred mass times are always taken into consideration when completing the schedule. There are two lectors scheduled for each Liturgy.

If you would like to find out more about this most rewarding ministry, contact Judy. There is no pressure and/or charge for information. Question: God rarely seems to answer my prayers. Is He really listening?

Answer: As our Mission Statement says, “We are a Throughout Scripture, God promises to answer the prayers Christ-Centered Community and we strengthen of His people. Sometimes things don’t turn out the way each other through prayer“. Listed below are we’d hope. God won’t miraculously do evil or fulfill our brothers and sisters who are in need, and selfish intentions . If we’re praying for something immoral, are requesting our prayers for their intentions God isn’t going to answer that prayer for us! Of course, we still have the freedom to make choices, but it isn’t God’s Our Veterans Our Friars movement. Sometimes we’re not praying for something Our Military both home and abroad evil, but our intentions are less than honorable. For Mike Rupolo John D ’Arcangelis example, “Please convert my mother -in-law so she goes to Fr. Barbara Bellassi Linda Wolters Swengras Marie Burns Neris After all, God knows what He is about . He has plans in Wendy Albinowski Schenck mind for us, but they might not be what we think. For most of us, winning the lottery would bring about a material Lauren Vershon Josephine Balzano benefit. That said, funds used in continually purchasing Patrick Faheyon Earlene Chapman tickets to provide the means for God to “work” could likely Debbie Ann Chang Anna Filiano go towards better avenues of financial stability. God is Fr. Fred Nickle Tom and Margaret concerned with our ultimate good. When we pray, we’re Matias Adrian Acevedo Debbie Kuhn invited to surrender our lives to Him.
