8 OPENING PRAYER

Creative God, you make all things new in heaven and on earth. We come to you in a new year with new desires and old fears, new decisions and old controversies, new dreams and old weaknesses.

Because you are a God of hope, we know that you create all the possibilities of the future. Because you are a God of love, we know that you walk with us as you lead us into new life. Because you are the God of our faith, we enter your gates with thanksgiving and praise, as we seek to serve and bless you in this new year.

We make our prayer in the name of Jesus Christ, our Lord. Amen.

9 OFFERING OF OUR GIFTS TO GOD

OFFERTORY CAROL OF THE MAGI | JOHN RUTTER

We rode all night thro’ fields of darkness, Our guiding light, the eastern stars; We came to Bethlehem, we all were weary: We’d travelled far that night, we’d travelled far. We’d travelled far. We heard that here we’d find Messiah Foretold by seers from days of old; We looked for palaces: we found a stable Could it be here, so bare and cold? So bare and cold? We entered in and there we saw him; It seemed we’d known him from long before. A child like any child, yet somehow different: The face of every child in him we saw The face of every child we saw. We brought him gifts and we offer , We knelt down low in silent prayer. With eyes that seem to know both joy and sadness; The child looked down as we knelt there The child looked down as we knelt there. So long ago, yet I remember, That child who lay at Mary’s knee. How strange that every child seemed so much like him His is the face I seem to see His is the face I seem to see.

12 CHILDREN’S LESSON

SCRIPTURE LESSON JOHN 5:2-9 NEW REVISED STANDARD VERSION

Now in Jerusalem by the Sheep Gate there is a pool, called in Hebrew Bethzatha, which has five porticoes. In these lay many invalids—blind, lame, and paralyzed. One man was there who had been ill for thirty-eight years. When Jesus saw him lying there and knew that he had been there a long time, he said to him, “Do you want to be made well?” The man answered him, “Sir, I have no one to put me into the pool when the water is stirred up; and while I am making my way, someone else steps down ahead of me.” Jesus said to him, “Stand up, take your mat and walk.” At once the man was made well, and he took up his mat and began to walk. Now that day was a sabbath.

19 NOTE FROM THE PASTORS

“We all want progress. But progress means getting nearer to the place where you want to be. And if you have taken a wrong turning, then to go forward does not get you any nearer. If you are on the wrong road, progress means doing an about-turn and walking back to the right road; and in that case the man who turns back soonest is the most progressive man. There is nothing progressive about being pig-headed and refusing to admit a mistake.” -C.S. Lewis

It seems counterintuitive, but oftentimes to move forward demands that we retrace our steps. The wrong path will only lead you to the wrong place; it’s as simple as that. Life by a constant death to the things we love so that we might fall in love with the people and things God loves; that is the journey of discipleship.

This January we will explore how as a Christian community God is calling us to make progress in our life with Jesus by saying, “I Quit.” I quit trying to be everything so much that I feel like I’m nothing. I quit believing more things are, well, more. I quit pretending that a well-paying job I hate will silence the calling of my true vocation.

When everyone around us is adding more resolutions to start the New Year, we will explore what we are giving up for the sake of progress. Join us this January for a four- week sermon series on that art and practice of saying, “I Quit.”

Grace and Peace, Rev. Will McLeane

20 SUNDAY SCHOOL This Month’s Featured Sunday School Class!

Crosstalk – Room 169 Crosstalk is a member-facilitated Sunday School class with a primary focus on deepening our faith by gaining a richer understanding of God’s Word and church history through the study and discussion of books written by a variety of theologians, occasionally supplemented with videos and other visual resources. We are self-taught with occasional guest teachers and speakers. Our class has occasional socials outside of the Sunday school hour as well. We are also a mission-oriented class, actively participating in WIHN, Sandwich Brigade, Angel Tree, and others. Crosstalk welcomes all, and we celebrate that our diverse faith journeys enrich discussion and learning. The age range of Crosstalk, while welcoming to all ages, tends to be 40’s and above. We hope that you will join us!

LIFT – Room 166 Learning in Fellowship Together ... LIFT ... is facilitated by class members (strictly by choice...not required). We have gone through books with and without DVDs by a variety of authors. While our lesson is from 10 a.m. to 10:30 a.m. we do have fellowship and treats beginning shortly 9:30 a.m. We have a meal together during the Christmas season and other times on occasion. We are a small class of senior citizens who love to laugh, share our faith and our stories. Although our door closes at 10 a.m., we do have an “open door” policy and welcome visitors or new members all the time. Life, as our faith, is a journey. It is wonderful to share the adventure. Amen!
