Winter/Spring 2021 WINTER/SPRING 2021 REGISTRATION BEGINS JANUARY 6, 9:30am SEE REGISTRATION INFO 63 TABLE OF CONTENTS 4 WINTER/SPRING 2021 Dear Island Residents, While this year has been anything but consistent, our focus remains on offering safe and fulfilling recreational programming and out- door opportunities. We appreciate the support we have received regarding our recreational programming, special events, and outdoor resources. Parks have remained essential in keeping people active and engaged. In this past year, we have finished the John Nelson to Sound to Olympic (STO) Trail connection, the Founders Pickleball Courts at Battle Point Park, and are in the final stages of the renovation of the KidsUp! Playground. While you are spending time in parks and on trails, don’t forget to follow our Park and Trail Etiquette, posted at all parks and trailheads. Please remember to wear a mask, step off trail for oncoming groups if possible, keep group sizes small, and stay socially distanced. Thank you for respecting our parks, staff, and other visitors during COVID-19. We would like to thank all our volun- teers, part-time, seasonal, and full-time staff for their hard work, agility, and passion. We ask you to continue supporting our community and staff by continuing to follow our safety guidelines for parks and recreation programs. Warmly, With the ongoing COVID-19 conditions, the Bainbridge Island Metro Park & Recreation District has had to remain alert and flexible, with programming guidelines changing weekly. As a result of consistently evolving health guidelines, the Park District has decided to move the distribution of the recreation program catalog to an electronic file. Terry Lande, Executive Director The decision to move Recreation Connection to a fully online platform allows the agency the ability to adapt our programs to fit changing government ordinances, while also reducing costs in this challenging time. A limited amount of hard copies will be available for pick-up at the Aquatic Center during operational hours. The meaningful work and outstanding commitments demonstrated by these people highlight what makes our Park District such an outstanding Bainbridge Island community asset. Metro Park & Recreation District Community Outreach Coordinator An interview with Emily Swift. QUESTION: After working with Park Services for years, how did you decide to switch to Special Events? ANSWER: I loved working for Park Services, and I am so grateful that I still get to collaborate with the crew in my new Community Outreach position. They are the dream team behind our Haunted Hayride Pond Monster and all our unique attractions! While working with Park Services, I got to explore a variety of different roles, between volunteer coordination, horticulture, trail management, and more. No matter the role, I have always found the most enjoyment in my direct interactions with our community. I have always been drawn to the face-to-face moments, when all the preparation and development of an event or project culminates, and I am left with an image of my community members smiling and enjoying themselves. QUESTION: What challenges have you faced transitioning to your new position, and what aspects have been the most rewarding? ANSWER: Well, there has been a global pandemic! My first day was on March 16, and by March 17 we were working from home. It would have been a different, perhaps easier transition had things been operating in

During September, 1966, California is preparing to execute Eusebio Viramontes, condemned under a “Little Lindberg” law for kidnap, robbery, and sexual assault. He has authored two books and become a cause célèbre during eleven years on Death Row. His sister Felicia, a film student at UCLA and weekend participant in the Delano Grape Pickers’ Strike, hopes to gain public sympathy for a reprieve, but she is hampered by pregnancy and a strained relationship with her boyfriend, Albert Brofield. In a separate thread, Philip Tseng was prosecutor at Eusebio’s trial. Now he is a superior court judge and husband of a candidate for state superintendent of schools. French-born and half-Chinese, he is facing mid-life self doubt. In his spiritual questioning, he is drawn to Tom Garcia, pacifist and a leader of the capital punishment abolition movement. Just as Felicia sets in motion a UFW-style march from San Quentin to Sacramento, both Felicia and Judge Tseng are visited by Anna Sorenson, once Eusebio’s kindergarten-aged victim. Though emotionally fragile, she claims forgiveness for Eusebio.     “A Call to Arms” Sermon for the First Sunday after Pentecost N. Farnham & St. John’s Episcopal Churches June 7, 2020 – The Rev. Torrence Harman The Church calls today Trinity Sunday. Given our passages appointed for today it feels more like “Farewell Sunday.” And in a way it truly is as we cross over into Ordinary Time – the longest period in our liturgical year – with Paul and Jesus taking leave of their “congregations.” Two thousand years later we are crossing over into a time that definitely is not “ordinary.” And we do so as the heat of summer and the heated emotions all around envelop us. In our passages today we have good-bye speeches by Paul and Jesus – both of whom well knew traumatic times. They are taking their leave of us just when it seems we really need them to stay around, walk with us, talk us through the societal traumas our times are presenting. What do they have to say? Listen to Paul’s final words in the final passage of his Second Letter to the Corinthians. Finally, brothers and sisters, farewell. Put things in order, listen to my appeal, agree with one another, live in peace and the God of love and peace be with you. Greet one another with a holy kiss. All the saints greet you. The grace of the Lord Jesus Christ, the love of God and the communion of the Holy Spirit be with all of you. Now listen to the final passage of the final chapter of Matthew’s Gospel offering Jesus’ final words to his disciples as he “ascends” back from where he came.

Let us know you in the breaking of the bread, and in every person we meet. They begged him to stay with them in the village they called home. Please stay with us.
