It is the only currently known specimen, collected by Victor Fet in July 1985, and deposited in ZISP (St. Petersburg, Russia). The original types are considered lost. Detailed photographs of the neotype are provided, as well as comments on this unique psammophile buthid. We also discuss and compare pectinal tooth counts of psammophile scorpions relative to other scorpions. L o u r e n ç o (With 14 figures) Abstract A new species belonging to the enigmatic genus Apistobuthus Finnegan, 1932 (Scorpiones, Buthidae) is described in this paper. The description of Apistobuthus susanae n. sp. is based on a single adult female collected in Ahvaz, Iran. The genus Apistobuthus was previously monotypic, the only known species being A. pterygocercus Finnegan, 1932 from Arabia. With the description of A. susanae sp. n. the number of species is raised to two and the distribution of the genus extended from Saudi Arabia, Oman Republic and Kuwait to Iran. The two known species are very similar in their general morphology, but can be readily identified by their trichobothrial patterns. A. pterygocercus is orthobothriotaxic whereas A. susanae sp. n. is neobothriotaxic minorant. Introduction The genus Apistobuthus was created by Finnegan (1932) on the basis of 3 specimens, 1 male and 2 females, collected in Arabia by Mr. Bertram Thomas. The localities indicated by Finnegan were Uruq Dhahiqah and Shena. With the creation of the new genus, Finnegan also described one new species Apistobuthus pterygocercus which was indicated as the type species of the new genus. The descriptions of both the new genus and species were extremely detailed and well illustrated. Since its description A. pterygocercus has attracted the attention of specialists mainly on account of the very strange morphology both of its prosomal region and of the second metasomal segment which is anormally rounded and much larger than the other four.

The content is mainly addressed to non-zoologists, working in research fields that embrace scorpion biology, notably to those working with venoms and toxins. The historical aspects described include academic professional scholars who worked on scorpion classification and general distribution patterns; and to a lesser extent, on studies of ecology and natural history. The aim is not to provide an exhaustive description of all scholars who in one way or another became involved with scorpions, but rather of those who greatly contributed during a given period to the research of these organisms. No critical analysis of the work of previous researchers is undertaken, but some comments are proposed to bring clarification on ‘who’s who’. Since a global consensus in relation to classification and/or distribution patterns has not been reached among modern experts, these different approaches are also presented without judgment. Methods: Data were extracted by a mini review on scorpion stinging articles in Iran until early 2018 and then the sting agent species in each area were studied. Geographical and provincial distribution of each species also was provided. Results: Twelve scorpion species are causative agents of sting. According to their deadly rate and clinical symptoms, some of them are considered the most dangerous venomous animals in Iran. Some death cases have been reported be- cause of the sting of 3 species of Hemiscorpius lepturus, H. acanthocercus and Androctonus crassicauda. Remaining species have not deadly sting but because of their frequency, they encounter the individuals and cause the stinging. Conclusion: The highest number of sting agents is in Khuzestan, however Gilan and Mazandaran have the lowest fre- quency. Because of the high prevalence of sting agent species in that province, the necessity of providing control and prevention programs is very important.

Results: Overall, 169 sources were found. Based on the STROBE checklist, the quality of the documents was also considered, and ultimately, 95 sources were selected. Sixty-four species of scorpions have been identified in Iran and 86% of the species belong to the Buthidae family, and the rest (9.5%, 4.5%) belong to the Hemiscorpi- idae and Scorpionidae families, respectively.

One of the many interesting aspects of scorpions is that they have venom arsenals for capturing prey and defending against predators, which may play a critical role in their evolutionary success. Unfortunately, however, scorpion envenomation represents a serious health problem in several countries, including Iran. Iran is acknowledged as an area with a high richness of scorpion species and families. The diversity of the scorpion fauna in Iran is the subject of this review, in which we report a total of 78 species and subspecies in 19 genera and four families. We also list some of the toxins or genes studied from five species, including Androctonus crassicauda, Hottentotta zagrosensis, Mesobuthus phillipsi, Odontobuthus doriae, and Hemiscorpius lepturus, in the Buthidae and Hemiscorpiidae families.
