Visitor Guide LISMORE CASTLE GARDENS & GALLERY About Lismore Castle There has been a castle at Lismore ever since 1185 when Prince John built a ‘castellum’ on the present site. When John became King of England he handed the Castle over to the Church and it was used as a Bishop’s Palace until 1589. In 1589 the Castle was leased and later bought outright by Sir Walter Raleigh. In 1602, he sold Lismore to Richard Boyle, who later became the first Earl of Cork. Richard Boyle’s youngest son, Robert Boyle, the philosopher and father of modern chemistry, was born at Lismore in 1626. In 1753, the Castle and its lands passed to the fourth Duke of Devonshire following his marriage to Lady Charlotte Boyle, the only surviving daughter and heiress of the fourth Earl of Cork. Therefore a comprehensive review of the literature was conducted to summarize the pharmacological and clinical effects of Rosa canina L. to reevaluate its usefulness in traditional medicine. For various preparations of rose hip and rose hip and seed, antioxidative and antiinflammatory effects have been demonstrated. Lipophilic constituents are involved in those mechanisms of action. The proprietary rose hip and seed powder LitozinR has been employed successfully in a number of exploratory studies in patients suffering from osteoarthritis, rheumatoid arthritis and low back pain. However, the sizes of the clinical effects for the different indications need to be determined to assure clinical significance. There is also a rationale behind the use of LitozinR as part of a hypocaloric diet based on the rose hip probiotic, stool regulating and smooth muscle-relaxing actions, as well as the rose hip seed lipid-lowering, antiobese and antiulcerogenic effects. -

We assess the importance of gall traits in structuring oak cynipid communities and summarize the evidence for bottom-up and top-down effects across trophic levels. -

Abstract Grazing by wild and domestic mammals can have small to large effects on plant communities, depend- ing on characteristics of the particular community and of the type and intensity of grazing. The broad objective of this report was to extensively review literature on the effects of grazing on 25 plant commu- nities of the southwestern U.S. in terms of plant species composition, aboveground primary productiv- ity, and root and soil attributes. Livestock grazing management and grazing systems are assessed, as are effects of small and large native mammals and feral species, when data are available. Emphasis is placed on the evolutionary history of grazing and productivity of the particular communities as deter- minants of response. After reviewing available studies for each community type, we compare changes in species composition with grazing among community types. Comparisons are also made between southwestern communities with a relatively short history of grazing and communities of the adjacent Great Plains with a long evolutionary history of grazing. Evidence for grazing as a factor in shifts from grasslands to shrublands is considered. An appendix outlines a new community classification system, which is followed in describing grazing impacts in prior sections. -

Swing Through
Swing Through 20m Swing Through is an interactive agility garden that connects the user to Canada’s diverse landscape, as well as its major economic industry. The garden is a series of thirteen finished lumber posts that dangle from a large steel structure, creating “tree swings”. On the swings are climbing holds where visitors can use the holds to climb up and across the tree swings. Directly under the tree swings are thirteen colour-coordinated stumps that give the user an extra boost, if needed. The thirteen timber tree swings represent Canada’s ten provinces and three territories by using wood from the official provincial and territorial trees. Surrounding this structure of Canadian trees is a garden divided into thirteen sections displaying the native plants of each province and territory. (Rosacea family) is an ornamental plant with erect prickly shrub and fragrant pink or white flowers, grown for decorative purposes in gardens and landscape designs projects. It is native to Europe, northwest Africa, and western Asia. Its fruits are extensively used worldwide in food preparation. It is traditionally proposed as a dietary supplement and herbal remedy for the prevention and treatment of different human diseases. This review aimed to inves- tigate the pharmacological and therapeutic properties of R. canina in traditional medicine and sci- entific papers. Results from numerous studies indicated that this plant owned many biological po- tencies, including anti-inflammatory, anti-tumor, immunomodulatory, anti-microbial, anti-oxidant, pain reduction, anti-diabetic, anti-hyperlipidemic, neuroprotective, genoprotective, anti-obesity, skin-whitening, and anti-biotic resistance reversal activity as well as exerting a positive influence on the osteoarthritis, anxiety, depression, recognition memory, urinary and reproductive systems disorders, and neutrophil respiratory burst. Nevertheless, the exact mechanism of action for these properties is not fully recognized. Due to the lack of toxicity and side effects, this plant has been considered as a valuable complementary drug for various diseases. Slot Copyrighted by Coralie Farinas 2020 1 Abstract The characterization of plant germplasm has tremendous potential to help address the many challenges that the field of plant health is facing, such as climate change continuously modifying the regions of previously known disease occurrence. The worldwide trade of the plant genus Phlox represents an important revenue for the horticultural industry. However, Phlox species are highly susceptible to the fungal disease powdery mildew (PM), and infected materials shipping across borders accelerate the risk of disease spread. Through collaboration with laboratories in the U.S., we investigated the genotypic and phenotypic diversity of a PM population to better understand its capacity to adapt to new environments and new resistant hosts. To do this, we developed tools to grow and study PM pathogens of Phlox in vitro, and then used whole genome comparison and multilocus sequence typing (MLST) analysis to study the genetic structure of the population. Additionally, we explored Phlox germplasm diversity to identify a range of plant responses to PM infection by comparing disease severity progression and length of latency period of spore production across a combination of Phlox species and PM isolates in vitro.
