Mitchell Mitchell Ecological Research Service, LLC P.O. Box 2520 High Springs, Florida 32655 ABSTRACT A 13-month drift fence study in two replicates of hardwood forest stands and two fields in early succession in the central Virginia Piedmont revealed that amphibian abundance is significantly reduced by removal of forest cover. Pitfall traps captured 12 species of frogs, nine salamanders, four lizards, and five snakes. Twenty-two species of amphibians were captured on the hardwood sites compared to 15 species on the old fields. Eight times as many amphibians were caught per trap day on both hardwood sites than in the combined old field sites. The total number of frogs captured on the hardwoods was higher than in the old fields, as was the total number of salamanders. Numbers of frogs and salamanders captured per trap day were significantly higher in the hardwood sites than in the old field sites. Seven species of small-bodied reptiles were caught in both habitat types. More lizard species were captured in the old fields, whereas more snakes were caught in the hardwoods. The number of individual reptiles captured per trap day was similar in both habitat types. Despite the fact that large portions of the Virginia Piedmont remained in agriculture following losses in the 18th century, reclaimed areas such as in private and state forests, state and national parks, and federal military bases have slowed amphibian declines in some of this landscape. -

The following endoparasites were found: a myxozoan, Cystodiscus sp., a trematode, Clinostomum marginatum, two tapeworms, Cylindrotaenia americana (Oklahoma only) and Distoichometra bufonis, five nematodes, acuariid larvae, Cosmocercoides variabilis, Oswaldocruzia pipiens, larval Physaloptera sp. (Arkansas only), and Rhabdias americanus (Arkansas only), and acanthocephalans (Oklahoma only). April 2020 SCCF Member Update Cane Toads on Sanibel and Captiva By Chris Lechowicz, Herpetologist and Wildlife & Habitat Management Director It is that time of year again when it is slowly starting to warm up and any out-of-season rainstorms can trigger Parotoid gland amphibian breeding. On Sanibel, this is limited to frogs and toads as we do not have any salamander species on the island. Besides the southern leopard frog (Lithobates sphenocephalus) which is our sole true winter breeder, the southern toad (Anaxyrus terrrestris) and the giant toad aka cane toad (Rhinella marina) are the usual suspects for late winter/early spring breeding, especially after a heavy rain. The southern toad is native and too often confused for the invasive exotic giant toad — the cane toad — in our area. Giant toads go by several local names, depending on where you are located. Iran Abstract Background and purpose: Venenum Bufonis is a Chinese traditional medicine produced from the glandular secretions of toads that contain biogenic amines, which have anti-inflammatory properties. The present study aimed to examine the effect of Bufo viridis secretions (BVS) on anxiety and depression-like behavior and hippocampal senile plaques volume in an animal model of Alzheimer’s disease (AD). Experimental approach: Thirty-eight male Wistar rats were used. AD was induced by amyloid-beta (Aβ1-42) (10 µg/2 µL, intracerebroventricular injection, icv) and then BVS at 20, 40, and 80 mg/kg were injected intraperitoneally (ip) in six equal intervals over 21 days. Anxiety and depression-like behavior were assessed using behavioral tests including open field test (OFT), elevated plus maze (EPM), and forced swimming test (FST) 21 days after the surgery. The volume of senile plaques was assessed based on the Cavalieri principle. Findings/Results: Results of the OFT showed that the central crossing number and the time in the AD group were significantly decreased compared to the sham group (P ˂ 0.01 and P ˂ 0.001, respectively). -

Notable Facts • They have very large paired parotoid glands containing Bufotoxin that is oozed out when harassed. • This milky toxin has killed household pets (dogs, cats) and numerous wildlife species when ingested. • There has been documented human fatalities from “toad- licking” and ingestion. • Eggs/larvae are toxic to wildlife. • Highly nocturnal Prey and Predators • They consume invertebrates, small rodents, birds, amphibians, reptiles , and plants. • They will eat non-living prey (small dead animals, dog and food, feces). • The are preyed on in their natural range by caimans (C. latirostris), certain species of fish, Possums (Didelphis species), meat ants, banded cat-eyed snake (Leptodeira annulata), and some species of ibis. • They can lay up to ~30,000 eggs a year. HILLSBOROUGH RIVER GREENWAYS TASK FORCE FROG LISTENING NETWORK This program is designed to assist you in learning the frogs, and their calls, in the Hillsborough River Greenway System. Through this program, volunteers can help in local frog and toad research efforts. We use frogs and toads because: • They are good biological indicators of the river system’s health. • Their lifecycles span from wetland to upland areas. • They are very susceptible to environmental change. • They track the hydrologic cycle. • They are good ecological barometers for the health of the ecosystem. Frogs indicative of healthy Ecosystems: • Gopher Frog • Certain Tree Frogs Such As The: Barking Treefrog and the Pinewoods Treefrog Frogs indicative of exotic invasion and conversion to urbanization: • Cuban Tree Frog • Marine Toad These are non-native species that have been imported or introduced to our area. Volunteers are helping by: • Learning the calls. • Listening for calls. • Recording call information. Provide the recorded call information to the HRGTF on the data forms provided. This information will be used to detect changes or trends within frog populations over time. • This in turn helps to assess the health of the Ecosystem which then benefits: •Frogs • Other area wildlife •Ourselves Frog calls are easy to learn! • They are distinctive and unique. • We will use mnemonics (phrases that sound like the frog call) to remind us what frog we are listening to. • Many of the names of the frogs are associated with their calls. • For Example: the Bullfrog has a call that sounds like a bullhorn. Interestingly, some insect species can take advantage of the CG’s toxicity and by absorbing them, they are also protected from predation. The mechanism of action of CG’s toxicity is inhibition of Na+/K+-ATPase (the sodium-potassium pump, NKA), which disrupts the ionic homeostasis leading to elevated Ca2+ concentration resulting in cell death. Thus, NKA serves as a molecular target for CGs (although it is not the only one) and even though CGs are toxic for humans and some animals, they can also be used as remedies for various diseases, such as cardiovascular ones, and possibly cancer. Although the anticancer mechanism of CGs has not been fully elucidated, yet, it is thought to be connected with the second role of NKA being a receptor that can induce several cell signaling cascades and even serve as a growth factor and, thus, inhibit cancer cell proliferation at low nontoxic concentrations. -
