Jews, who have changed much in the course of history, are certainly no race, [but] the anti‐Semites in a way are a race, because they always use the same slogans, display the same attitudes, indeed almost look alike. —Max Horkheimer1 John Berryman’s “The Imaginary Jew,” published in the Kenyon Review of 1945, is in some ways a rather programmatic account of one man’s conversion from parlor anti‐ Semitism to a feeling of solidarity with Jews. The climax occurs when a bigot accuses the narrator of being Jewish in order to discredit him in an argument over Roosevelt’s foreign policy prior to the American entry into World War II. The accusation completely unnerves the narrator in ways he does not immediately understand, and he is shocked to see that it discredits him in the eyes of the crowd, which has assembled at Union Square to hear impromptu debates. Later, after leaving the scene of his embarrassment, he decides to lay claim to this mistaken, or imaginary, identity, and comes to the following conclusion about the nature of prejudice: “My persecutors were right: I was a Jew. The imaginary Jew I was was as real as the imaginary Jew hunted down, on other nights and days, in a real Jew. Every murderer strikes the mirror, the lash of the torturer falls on the mirror and cuts the real image, and the real and the imaginary blood flow down together.”2 The story garnered some attention when it appeared in 1945. -

EVELYN WAUGH NEWSLETTER AND STUDIES Volume 27, Number 3 Winter 1993 BARD IA MARTIN STANNARD'S MILITARY MUDDLE By Donat Gallagher (James Cook University, Australia) When reading Martin Stannard's No Abiding City [entitled Evelyn Waugh, The Later Years in the USA], for review, I was struck by what seemed an exceptionally large number of factual errors, unsupported claims, imputations of motive, overstatements and misreadings. The inaccuracy seemed so pervasive as to undermine the book's value as a work of record. In order to test this impression, I decided to examine a short neutral passage that would serve as a fair sample. The passage chosen for scrutiny had to be brief, and about an easily researched subject. The subject also had to be incapable of having stirred the prejudices of the biographer or the reviewer, or of awakening those of the readers of the book or review. Pages 28-31 of No Abiding City were selected because they dealt with a very minor military operation, viz. a Commando raid on Bardia, and with a humdrum article Waugh wrote about it. No issue of class, religion, politics, literary theory or internal military squabbling arises. Nor does the spectre of professional rivalry, for no one, I imagine, seeks the bubble reputation in a war of words about Bardia. The three pages narrate the events of the raid, using information drawn from Waugh's article and diaries. In addition, criticisms are made of Waugh on the basis of real and purported discrepancies between the article and the diaries. Little is said about the genesis of the article or about the administrative difficulties attending its publication. -

ALEXANDER RABAN WAUGH ARCHIVE SHERBORNE SCHOOL (ARCHON CODE: GB1949) Alexander Raban Waugh was born on the 8 July 1898, the elder son of Arthur Waugh (1866-1943) and his wife Catherine Charlotte Raban (1870-1954). His younger brother, Evelyn Arthur St John Waugh, was born on 28 October 1903. Alec attended Fernden Preparatory School in Haslemere, Surrey. In September 1911, aged 13, he joined Sherborne School and, like his father before him, was a member of School House (a). During his time at Sherborne Alec was a member of the 1st XV (1914) and of the 1st XI (1914, 1915), a House Prefect, captain of the School House XV, editor of The Shirburnian, a member of the Games Committee, and a Corporal in the OTC. In October 1913 S.P.B. Mais joined the School’s teaching staff. Mais was in favour of educational reform and was a frequent contributor to discussions in the press. During the next four years Alec became increasingly influenced by Mais who was later blamed by the Headmaster for encouraging Alec to write The Loom of Youth. In June 1915 Alec was awarded the School English Verse prize for his poem ‘Flanders’ (published in The Shirburnian, June 1915). However, in July 1915, aged 17, Alec was expelled from Sherborne School. In September 1915 Alec joined the Inns of Court OTC and was sent to camp in Berkhamstead for training with his company. From January 1916 to the middle of March 1916 Alec wrote his first novel, The Loom of Youth, posting section by section to his father who corrected the spelling and punctuation. -

However, the scope of the catalogue inevitibly takes the form of a timeline in artifacts. It begins with the proofs of Waugh’s first literary output, aged 7 and his contributions to school and university pub- lications, through to his comprehensive catalogue of published work: non-fiction first followed by his triumphant first novel and the further successes which followed.
