More than 20 years ago, I started with Starlight as a volunteer and have since held many roles within the organization. In every capacity, I have witnessed both the heartache and joy that comes from caring for seriously ill children and their families. Their triumphs and pitfalls have had a profound impact on my life. As I look to them and the future of Starlight, my role is clear. We must continue to provide high-quality, tangible programs that directly impact our children and families. We move into 2014 confident in the plans that we’ve laid and encouraged by our incredible donors, volunteers, board members and staff. Each year, our chapter meets the needs of more than 275,000 children and families within the tri-state area. However, there’s always more that we can do. Throughout our 29 years as a Starlight chapter, we have shaped our programs to reflect the needs and wants of children, their families and pediatric healthcare professionals. We will continue to listen to them and develop and enhance our strategies to reach more children and families, focusing on the gaps that Starlight fills in the pediatric healthcare space. The Starlight Board of Directors, myself and our executive team are committed to wisely allocating funds that we receive from generous donors to meet these needs, both those that have already been identified and those that are revealed as we move forward. Our team is focused on doing more with less and every day, we are identifying new and unique ways to increase our efficiency and effectiveness. This report illuminates how Starlight continues to improve the life and health of kids and families around the world and how your invaluable contributions make it possible. Every day a child is born or diagnosed with a chronic or life-threatening medical condition. While we can’t physically heal them, we can offer ways to improve their hospital experience, which can greatly improve a patient’s health outcome and we can also offer them opportunities to create fun, positive memories during their challenging medical journey. On behalf of all of the children and families whose lives have been forever changed through Starlight, and for those we can continue to help, we thank you for your continued support. Michele Hall-Duncan, Executive Director 2 | starlight.org/newyork About Starlight Children’s Foundation NY*NJ*CT Starlight Children’s Foundation NY*NJ*CT is an international nonprofit 501(c)(3) and is part of Starlight’s global network, serving kids and families through partnerships with more than 100 healthcare facilities. Over the past 30 years, Starlight has become a leading global charity that partners with experts to improve the life and health of kids and families around the world. Collaborating with innovators in pediatric healthcare, entertainment and technology, Starlight provides a unique blend of family- centered programs and services from hospital to home. Founded in 1982 by filmmaker Peter Samuelson and his cousin, Emma Samms, Starlight originally launched as a wish granting organization and rapidly expanded its services to include an extensive menu of groundbreaking programs. Some of the benefits associated with Starlight’s programs include: Decreased pain and anxiety Increased knowledge and sense of responsibility for managing disease Decreased need for pain medication A greater willingness to return for treatment A greater sense of peer support Alleviation of stress, loneliness and isolation that often accompany prolonged illness Now in its 29th year, the New York, New Jersey and Connecticut chapter of Starlight serves more than 275,000 children, teens and families in the tri-state area. Starlight’s programs play a critical role in the overall healing process by helping them cope with the challenging daily demands of illness, injury or disability. While others treat the illness, Starlight treats the child. starlight.org/newyork | 3 Starlight® Fun Center® Mobile Entertainment Units Equipped with the latest gaming system to provide bedside entertainment and the healing power of play, Starlight® Fun Center® units roll right up to the side of hospitalized children’s beds to provide comforting breaks and fun distraction. Particularly beneficial to children facing surgery, enduring long outpatient treatments or coping with loneliness after visiting hours have ended, Starlight Fun Center units greatly improve the experience for hospitalized children. 4 | starlight.org/newyork Starlight® Fun Center® Unit Recipients 2013 Bellevue Hospital Center (NY) Blythedale Children’s Hospital (NY) Coney Island Hospital (NY) Good Samaritan Regional Medical Center (NY) Goryeb Children’s Hospital at Morristown Memorial (NJ) Hackettstown Regional Medical Center (NJ) Harlem Hospital (NY) Hospital for Special Surgery (NY) Jacobi Medical Center (2) (NY) Lincoln Medical Center (NY) Manhattan Eye, Ear & Throat Hospital (NY) Metropolitan Hospital Center (NY) Morgan Stanley Children’s Hospital of New-York Presbyterian (2) (NY) Nassau University Medical Center (NY) New York Hospital Queens (NY) Northern Westchester Hospital (NY) NYU Hospital for Joint Diseases (NY) NYU Langone Medical Center (NY) St. Barnabas Medical Center (2) (NJ) St. Joseph’s Children’s Hospital (NJ) Stamford Hospital (CT) Steven and Alexandra Cohen Children’s Medical Center (NY) The Joseph M. Though doctors, nurses, family and friends make long stays more bearable, pediatric patients endure a great deal of time feeling lonely, bored and scared. That’s where Starlight comes in! Hospital Happenings are fun-filled parties and therapeutic workshops conducted on-site at the hospital. These interactive events include laughter-packed visits from musicians, clowns and entertainers, plus other special activities such as movie nights, game tournaments and crafting extravaganzas. All pediatric patients are welcome, as are their parents and siblings. And if children must stay in bed, we can often bring the party to their rooms! Starlight offers an assortment of programs and activities that reach children in the hospital. They include: Starworks With a focus on therapy through creative expression, graduate writing students work with hospitalized children and teens to help them communicate their inner feelings, hopes, dreams and lives through poetry, stories and essays. Music Program Children benefit from the power of music as a result of sessions with music therapists who not only encourage their creativity and personal expression, but also help them develop coping skills and techniques for pain management. Charles Armstrong 24 October 2012 Linguistics Research Thesis Advisor: Prof. Aaron Dinkin Vox Evocative: Pinpointing a possible sociological strategy for the typing of the phonatory and articulatory features of a singing genre Introduction The human singing voice. Discrepancies in the quantification and description of the work of our vocal cords offer a seemingly eternal source of academic discord. Despite the ubiquity of familiarity with singing voices, scientists and listeners alike seem to still perpetuate these massive discrepancies over the shared experience of listening to singing voices. One might expect a phenomenon almost as accessible as observing the blueness of the sky to have a consensual academic explanation. However, despite the amount of attention paid to the phenomenon of human singing by scientists and listeners around the world, much discordance and attention remains over how to describe and quantify this experience. Maybe this aforementioned academic conflict over quantitative and qualitative evaluations of the singing voice owes to the sheer acoustic diversity of human singing voices. If singing voices and styles were more homogenous objective entities, maybe the work of voice scientists and critical listeners would be simpler. Works of science fiction, even popular cartoons like Dexter's Laboratory and Family Guy, beg the comparison of voice scans to fingerprints. Just like the right voice evokes a response in these fictitious scanning machines, certain vocal qualities tend to evoke certain evaluations by humans. The ubiquity of references such as the ones from the described cartoons makes a case for the existence of a common latent acceptance of the unique and evocative qualities of the human voice.

  • Hallelujah’ the ‘Most Perfect Song in the World.’”Ii
The Most Perfect Song by Elise Aleman It’s intriguing how an obviously religious song gained so much wide-spread acceptance in a secular market. A book has even been written about the song’s success—The Holy or the Broken (Light).i “Bono, Calls ‘Leonard Cohen’s ‘Hallelujah’ the ‘most Perfect Song in the World.’”ii. Has the power of mass media, such as television and movies, been responsible for the recent popularity or does it go deeper, perhaps, a yearning for something bigger than ourselves. Leonard Cohen, a Canadian born singer-songwriter, is an esteemed member of the music community. He has won many prestigious awardsiii and in 2008 was inducted into the American Rock and Roll Hall of Fame Museumiv. Ironically, though, his “perfect song” had an imperfect start. Leonard struggled with the lyrics for almost five years revising the verses 80 times before its final cut. His long- time publisher rejected it calling it “a disaster.”v Perhaps this song’s quick climb from zero to hero began when it was heard in the popular animated movie Shrek.vi From there it has shown up in unexpected placed such as VH1’s official tribute video for the 9/11 disaster and the opening ceremonies of the 2010 Olympic Games in Vancouver (Light). It is a favored selection of singers in American Idol and X-Factor. The song’s haunting lyrics helped many Idol contestants climbed to the top, including Jason Castro and Lee DeWyze. In 2012 Brittany Spears called it the “Five million song” after Carly Rose Sonenclar’s renditionvii.
