starlight.org/newyork | 1 Letter from the Executive Director

This past year, I was honored to be named Executive Director of Starlight Children’s Foundation NY*NJ*CT. More than 20 years ago, I started with Starlight as a volunteer and have since held many roles within the organization. In every capacity, I have witnessed both the heartache and joy that comes from caring for seriously ill children and their families. Their triumphs and pitfalls have had a profound impact on my life.

As I look to them and the future of Starlight, my role is clear. We must continue to provide high-quality, tangible programs that directly impact our children and families. We move into 2014 confident in the plans that we’ve laid and encouraged by our incredible donors, volunteers, board members and staff. Each year, our chapter meets the needs of more than 275,000 children and families within the tri-state area. However, there’s always more that we can do.

Throughout our 29 years as a Starlight chapter, we have shaped our programs to reflect the needs and wants of children, their families and pediatric healthcare professionals. We will continue to listen to them and develop and enhance our strategies to reach more children and families, focusing on the gaps that Starlight fills in the pediatric healthcare space.

The Starlight Board of Directors, myself and our executive team are committed to wisely allocating funds that we receive from generous donors to meet these needs, both those that have already been identified and those that are revealed as we move forward.

Our team is focused on doing more with less and every day, we are identifying new and unique ways to increase our efficiency and effectiveness. This report illuminates how Starlight continues to improve the life and health of kids and families around the world and how your invaluable contributions make it possible.

Every day a child is born or diagnosed with a chronic or life-threatening medical condition. While we can’t physically heal them, we can offer ways to improve their hospital experience, which can greatly improve a patient’s health outcome and we can also offer them opportunities to create fun, positive memories during their challenging medical journey.

On behalf of all of the children and families whose lives have been forever changed through Starlight, and for those we can continue to help, we thank you for your continued support.

Michele Hall-Duncan, Executive Director

2 | starlight.org/newyork About Starlight Children’s Foundation NY*NJ*CT

Founded in 1982 by filmmaker Peter Samuelson and his cousin, Emma Samms, Starlight originally launched as a wish granting organization and rapidly expanded its services to include an extensive menu of groundbreaking programs.

Some of the benefits associated with Starlight’s programs include:

Decreased pain and anxiety Increased knowledge and sense of responsibility for managing disease Decreased need for pain medication A greater willingness to return for treatment A greater sense of peer support Alleviation of stress, loneliness and isolation that often accompany prolonged illness

Now in its 29th year, the , New Jersey and Connecticut chapter of Starlight serves more than 275,000 children, teens and families in the tri-state area. Starlight’s programs play a critical role in the overall healing process by helping them cope with the challenging daily demands of illness, injury or disability. starlight.org/newyork | 5 Hospital Happenings

Hospitalization is not generally associated with fun for anyone, but it’s especially tough on children and teens. Though doctors, nurses, family and friends make long stays more bearable, pediatric patients endure a great deal of time feeling lonely, bored and scared. That’s where Starlight comes in!

Hospital Happenings are fun-filled parties and therapeutic workshops conducted on-site at the hospital. These interactive events include laughter-packed visits from musicians, clowns and entertainers, plus other special activities such as movie nights, game tournaments and crafting extravaganzas. All pediatric patients are welcome, as are their parents and siblings. And if children must stay in bed, we can often bring the party to their rooms!

Starlight offers an assortment of programs and activities that reach children in the hospital. They include:

Starworks With a focus on therapy through creative expression, graduate writing students work with hospitalized children and teens to help them communicate their inner feelings, hopes, dreams and lives through poetry, stories and essays.

Music Program Children benefit from the power of music as a result of sessions with music therapists who not only encourage their creativity and personal expression, but also help them develop coping skills and techniques for pain management.

Clown Program Children suffering from a wide range of illnesses have come to rely on weekly visits from our clowns for large doses of happiness. Starlight® clowns help children in the recovery process by providing humor and laughter, which foster a positive and hopeful attitude.

Hospital Parties Often with a theme, hospital parties take place in pediatric wards throughout the tri-state area and include entertainment, food and crafts.

This year, Starlight NY*NJ*CT provided more than 2,400 Hospital Happenings!

6 | starlight.org/newyork Starlight® Site Care Rooms

It’s an unfortunate fact that many seriously ill children spend a significant amount of time in hospitals receiving treatments that are often painful and frightening. Those treatments very often take place in cold, sterile environments that don’t provide much comfort to young patients. But Starlight Children’s Foundation is working to change that by partnering with generous donors to transform those treatment rooms into Starlight® Site Care Rooms – beautifully designed, inviting hospital environments that support the healing of pediatric patients.

Care Rooms provide a tranquil setting with positive, distracting elements that according to many Child Life Specialists, help to minimize the discomfort and fear that children often experience during their hospital stay. Each room has a different theme, personally selected by the donor or hospital, and can include a variety of decorative details including colorful framed art, murals, bright floor tiles, new treatment beds, flat screen televisions, and in some cases, fiber-optic lighting, all designed to help keep children calm and divert their attention from painful procedures.

There are currently 42 Starlight Sites across the tri-state area, 30 of which are Care Rooms. Other Starlight Sites include playrooms, lounges and playgrounds, all of which help to provide entertaining oases for young patients and their families by including video games, computers, toys, crafts, music and most importantly, the comfort of other children.

Thank you to The Frances Davis Fund, Capital One Bank and The Jane & Larry Scheinfeld Foundation for funding tri-state area Care Rooms this year.

starlight.org/newyork | 7 Starlight® Wish Lists

In 2013, Starlight launched Starlight.org, the first global technology platform of its kind that links donors directly to partner facilities worldwide. The platform provides everyday philanthropists the opportunity to improve pediatric care within their own communities by choosing a hospital in their region and purchasing an item directly from that hospital’s Starlight® Wish List.

Hospitals across the tri-state area have been creating registries with their needs, including everything they need to best aid their pediatric patients on both the physical and emotional level. Wish Lists include everything from crayons and toys to Starlight® Fun Center® mobile entertainment units. To date, 61 area hospitals have registered their Wish Lists. We hope you’ll visit Starlight.org/newyork to support your area hospitals.

Starbright World®

Starbright World® is the first-ever online social network for teens and siblings of teens who have chronic and life-threatening medical conditions.

Being a teen is universally overwhelming without the added stress of serious illness. Experiencing frequent hospitalizations and procedures can cause feelings of exclusion from “normal” teen social activities and school events.

In Starbright World’s tight-knit community, teens can express themselves, develop communication skills, find encouragement, talk about their fears, process their feelings and connect globally with other teens who are going through similar experiences.

Powered by Starlight Children’s Foundation, all content in Starbright World is moderated by trained adults at all times, making it a safe and secure community where teens can chat, video conference with new- found friends, send emails, participate in fun events, essays and contests, play games and much more.

8 | starlight.org/newyork Pediatric Hospital Support Program

The Pediatric Hospital Support Program provides a wide variety of unique hospital programs designed to restore feelings of safety, confidence and trust to patients and their families during very challenging times.

Music and Dance Therapy, adapted yoga sessions for profoundly disabled children, Sensory Therapy, wheelchair accessible vans, recreational rooms, Horticulture Therapy, a Video Artist-in-Residence project and many other creative projects that enhance the lives of hospitalized children have all been supported by Starlight NY*NJ*CT in the tri-state area.

starlight.org/newyork | 11 Starlight® Escapes

Starlight® Escapes serve children diagnosed with chronic or life-threatening illnesses. They are family outings designed to create fun, positive memories during a challenging medical journey.

Starlight children, siblings and parents in the program enjoy movies, concerts, sporting events and other recreation away from healthcare facilities. These carefree, relaxing activities allow children to connect with other children and families to other families, letting them know that they are not alone as they cope with illness.

In 2013, more than 5,440 Starlight children and family members participated in the Starlight Escapes program, which hosted more than 389 events in the tri-state area, including in Rochester, NY and Albany, NY.

Once again, Camp Pontiac proved to be a Starlight family favorite! With camp fires, arts and crafts, dancing, arcade games, swimming and of course, everyone’s favorite zip line, the 6th Annual Starlight Weekend at Camp Pontiac was one for the record books. In typical camp tradition, long-time Starlight members reconnected and relaxed while new families bonded.

12 | starlight.org/newyork Starlight® Escapes

The highly anticipated Family Fun Day at Six Flags Great Adventure exceeded expectations this year. Nearly 600 children and parents came out for a sweltering afternoon at the park. But along with our exciting traditional events like Great Adventure, FunFuzion at New Roc City, Disney on Ice, the annual Holiday Party and the elegant Mother’s Day Brunch, we continued to identify new and exciting activities.

This summer, we added an event with Bike NY, which taught children and siblings bike safety as well as the logistics of riding a bike. In December, 125 people enjoyed a wondrous afternoon at World of Wings (WoW) Butterfly Museum in Teaneck, NJ. The event provided them with the opportunity to hop around in a bounce house, get their faces painted and tour the butterfly museum, which included a tropical oasis of flowers and waterfalls and is home to hundreds of butterflies.

In Rochester, families enjoyed a trip to Sahlen’s Stadium to cheer on the Western New York Flash while enjoying hot dogs, soda and ice cream during the game, followed by a spectacular post-game fireworks show! They also had breakfast with Santa at the Buffalo Zoo where they toured the sprawling zoo grounds, enjoyed catered food and of course, received presents from Santa.

Albany families enjoyed outings to Tri-City Valley Cats games where they snacked on hotdogs and popcorn, met South Paw the mascot, enjoyed VIP status with recognition on the jumbotron, sang “Take me out to the Ball Game,” and even threw out the first pitch!

starlight.org/newyork | 13 Starlight® Tablets

With six of Starlight’s award-winning online educational programs pre-loaded; connection to Starbright World®, a social networking platform for teens; and an evolving list of suggested apps from the Child Life community, Starlight® Tablets are a critical resource for healthcare professionals to support the ongoing needs of kids while in the hospital.

Starlight Tablets help Child Life Specialists ease patients’ fears and empower kids to cope with their diagnosis. Housed in a protective cover that meets hospital infection control protocols, the Tablet also serves as distraction therapy during medical procedures and lengthy wait times. Not only can they learn about their illness, they can use the tablets to play games, communicate with friends, watch videos and log on to Starbright World.

Because it is an extremely portable device, Child Life Specialists particularly enjoy that they can bring a Starlight Tablet to patients with limited mobility, making it a critical resource within pediatric units.

14 | starlight.org/newyork Interactive Multimedia Programs

Through Starlight-digital.org, interactive, multimedia programs are available to help kids understand the nature of their diagnosis, treatment options and plans for living with their illness. Programs available online and via Starlight® Tablets include:

Coping with Chemo – a series of short, animated, web-based movies that speak to teens in their own language about having cancer. Each webisode helps answer questions teens might have about their disease and treatment, and helps them cope with nausea, hair loss, trouble with friends and socialization and returning to school after an extended absence.

Burns: X-Men Comic – a unique comic book designed to help prepare children to answer the tough questions they may face while recovering from a serious burn injury. Topics explore learning how to accept themselves; managing how to get along with others; responding to questions, teasing and staring; and finding coping strategies.

Explorer Series (Mysteries of Bone Marrow, Blood Tests, IVs and Secrets of Spinal Fluid) – interactive programs designed for kids and teens featuring easy to understand information about different health terms and procedures including a bone marrow educational tool, a guide to blood tests and IVs and a comprehensive guide to spinal taps.

Quest for the Code (http://asthma.starlight.org/) – formerly a CD Rom, Quest for the Code is an online interactive game that helps kids learn how to manage their asthma. Featuring the talent of Whoopi Goldberg, Cuba Gooding Jr., Kelsey Grammer, Gwyneth Paltrow and other celebrities, Quest for the Code challenges players to outsmart a team of asthma villains in order to win back the pieces of the secret code. Knowledge of asthma, including asthma triggers and medications, is the secret weapon in challenging the villains!

starlight.org/newyork | 15 Starlight® Visibility Campaign

For the past six years, OOH Pitch, a boutique media agency dedicated to the creation and execution of customized out-of-home advertising programs, has tirelessly dedicated their efforts to the New York, New Jersey and Connecticut chapter to provide advertising space and visibility for the Foundation throughout the tri-state area. As a result of their hard work, our ads were visible on buses, billboards, phone kiosks, train platforms, on interior posters on Metro North and Long Island Railroad and within malls. Their dedication has helped us provide countless teddy bears to children in need of a furry friend, and has lent valuable support to our programming efforts.

Sponsorships are available for corporations, foundations and individuals at $5,000 (*plus applicable taxes), which includes the cost of the system, shipping, program administration and a full-service repair/maintenance warranty for three years. Send a Smile, Send a Bear - Originally designed as a holiday promotion, this program has transformed into a wildly successful, year-round occurrence thanks to amazing donors like you, whose $25 donation delivers smiles, comfort and cuddly teddy bear friends to sick children in pediatric units. This past year alone, your donations made it possible to provide 2,100 teddy bears to hospitalized children. The bears provide a welcome distraction from the stress and fear that children experience while in the hospital and help to raise their spirits. Though you won’t personally hold your gift, please know that a hospitalized child will see, touch and feel its warmth.

HELP BY DONATING YOUR TIME Volunteer Opportunities – Spend your free time supporting Starlight programs by volunteering at events, lending office support, or organizing your own fundraiser. You can also offer your special skills in public relations, marketing, or graphic design.

HELP CONNECT US TO FUNDING Corporate/Foundation Support – Share the message of Starlight with any of your corporate or foundation contacts to organize a promotional tie-in, sponsor an event, donate goods and services, or help secure a grant.

Individual Donations – Starlight accepts donations from individuals year- round. You can support our programs at any time by writing out your check to Starlight Children’s Foundation NY*NJ*CT and mailing it to: 1560 Broadway, Suite 600, New York, NY 10036.

Matching Gifts – This is an easy way to double your donation to Starlight. Find out if your company participates in this program, then simply fill out your company’s matching gift form and mail it to Starlight along with your contribution.

Stock Gift – Why not consider making a gift of stock? If you have held your security for longer than a year, you may deduct the full fair market value of your gift, and avoid capital gains tax. Your gift qualifies as a charitable deduction and will also benefit Starlight.

Planned Giving - As a nonprofit organization, Starlight NY*NJ*CT can be named as a full or partial beneficiary in a will, life insurance policy, retirement plan, annuity, or trust fund. These special gifts can provide you with a variety of estate, income and tax benefits, while enabling sick children to experience some of the joys of childhood.
