Those last thirty minutes are made all the more effective by the suspenseful build-up. Until then the narrative segments the chilling suspense with brief moments of horror. These not only warn; they tantalise about the mystery on the way to the revealing climax. 3 Almost any viewer will either work out what that mystery, or at the least, aspects of it, long before the naïve heroine Edith Cushing does. Originality is not the film’s strength. Naïve, isolated, inexperienced, young women have been going to dark sinister, isolated, aristocratic houses (and staying there!) since at least 1847, when Jane Eyre was published.

  • Mako Mori and the Gender Politics of Pacific Rim (2013)
Journal of American Studies of Turkey 39 (2014): 113-122 Mako Mori and the Gender Politics of Pacific Rim (2013) Nathanael Hood Carefully balancing on the top of an escape pod somewhere in the South China Sea, pilots Raleigh Becket (Charlie Hunnam) and Mako Mori (Rinko Kukuchi) embrace after successfully saving the world from an invasion of giant, extra-dimensional monsters known as “kaiju.” This ending from Guillermo del Toro’s Pacific Rim (2013) seems to cohere to traditional narrative tropes within the Western action genre wherein the hero triumphantly kisses his love interest after a great struggle, battle, or fight. And yet, a close inspection of this scene reveals a shocking subversion of this reliable concluding scenario: Becket and Mori do not kiss. They draw close, touch foreheads, and even lean in for a hug as the screen cuts to the credits. But again, they do not consummate their victory with a kiss. The absence of a kiss wasn’t an oversight on del Toro’s part. In fact, it was a conscious creative choice, recounting in an interview that he had filmed three different versions of the scene including one where they did kiss. Del Toro said: “We did one version where they kiss and it almost felt weird. They’re good friends, they’re pals, good colleagues” (qtd. Faraci). The idea that two (supposedly) heterosexual heroes would not fall in love during the course of a film and instead become good friends seems oddly counter-intuitive. For western audiences, the development of romantic feelings concluding with a kiss between the protagonist and their love interest is quintessential for creating a sense of narrative closure (Doane 196).

James Gray and the Struggle of the Middle-Class Filmmaker Kevin Lincoln April 14, 2017 10:41 a.m. James Gray on the set of The Lost City of Z. Photo: Aidan Monaghan/LCOZ HOLDINGS, LLC When people talk about how there are no more mid-budget, adult-oriented movies, they’re also talking, whether they realize it or not, about James Gray. Gray has been making films since 1994, when, at the tender age of 25, he wrote and directed Little Odessa, a gorgeous and affecting crime drama set in New York’s Brighton Beach. The film came out the same year as Pulp Fiction, but the two films couldn’t have been more different. Where Pulp Fiction practically bursts with Quentin Tarantino’s endless appetite for pop-culture history, Little Odessa is mature and existential, much in the tradition of serious European masters like Jean-Pierre Melville and Bernardo Bertolucci. Gray would go on to make four more films set in New York City: two crime dramas, The Yards and We Own the Night, both starring Joaquin Phoenix and Mark Wahlberg; Two Lovers, starring Phoenix and Gwyneth Paltrow; and The Immigrant, starring Phoenix, Marion Cotillard, and Jeremy Renner. All five of these movies range from very good to great, but none of them seem to even hint that a movie like The Lost City of Z could be in Gray’s future. An adaptation of David Grann’s nonfiction best seller of the same name, Lost City takes place in the jungles of the Amazon, and spans a 20-year period bisected by World War I.

  • Rinko Kikuchi in Space: Transnational Mexican Directors' Global Gaze
TRANSMISSIONS: THE JOURNAL OF FILM AND MEDIA STUDIES 2016, VOL.1, NO. 2, PP. 34-50. Jane Hanley Macquarie University Rinko Kikuchi in Space: Transnational Mexican Directors’ Global Gaze Abstract: Alejandro González Iñárritu and Guillermo del Toro are contemporaries and compatriots who have charted different paths in their careers as makers of major international releases. Between Babel's realist network narrative and the science fiction spectacle of Pacific Rim, the actor Rinko Kikuchi offers one connecting thread which can provide us insight into different transnational visions of the global. Pacific Rim establishes the typical global stakes now a cliché in expensive blockbusters, which increasingly depend on international markets for profitability and cannot incorporate too much locally specific experience incomprehensible to non-U.S. audiences, however del Toro's particular vision suggests a more complex reading of subjectivity in transnational space than the humanity vs. aliens plot may initially suggest. In this context, the figure of Kikuchi's Mako Mori is arguably the central character in terms of the narrative despite the film apparently being framed around Charlie Hunnam's Raleigh Becket. On the other hand, Kikuchi's performance as Chieko Wataya in González Iñárritu's Babel is at the centre of one story in the geographically dispersed but intersecting meditation on the relationship between the locally specific and global systems, with the Tokyo setting emphasising the alienation experienced by the character. Ultimately, Babel reproduces a sense of isolation whereas del Toro's global aesthetic and speculative world-building underpin transgressive intersubjective, intercultural, human-machine and human-monster communions. Key words: del Toro; Iñárritu; borders; alienation; liminality; science fiction film.
