ZooKeys 510: 209–222. doi: 10.3897/zookeys.510.8668 Abstract The geographic distribution of the genus Lophoproctus Pocock, 1894 has greatly expanded with new re- cords of the species Lophoproctus coecus Pocock, 1894, together with the reassignment of a number of millipedes formerly identified as Lophoproctus lucidus (Chalande, 1888). L. coecus was found to be the sole representative of the family Lophoproctidae in collections examined from Crimea and the Caucasian region. The species was also identified from Iran and Kyrgyzstan.Lophoproctus specimens collected in Italy by Verhoeff were reassigned as L. coecus with the exception of one specimen of L. jeanneli (Brölemann, 1910) from Capri. These data were combined with all available information from the literature to look at the pattern of distribution of the four species in the genus. -

In this contribution we record the presence of Polyxenus lagurus (Linnaeus, 1758) from Parque Nacional da Peneda-Gerês and of Lophoproctus cf. pagesi Condé, 1982 from Parque Natural da Arrábida. Key words: Lophoproctidae, Polyxenidae, Iberian Peninsula, cave habitat, leaf litter, pitfall traps, troglobionts. Introduction The order Polyxenida is the only order of the subclass Penicillata. This is a basal group of Diplopoda, sister group of all other diplopods (Enghoff, 1984; Sierwald & Bond, 2007). With about 160 known species (Nguyen Duy- Jacquemin & Geoffroy, 2003) the Polyxenida are divided in four families, three of them being known from Europe (Enghoff & Desmond Kime, 2007): Lophoproctidae, distri- buted in Mediterranean Europe; Polyxenidae, present in all Europe; and Synxenidae, only known from Spain. Despite the wide distribution of some species, polyxenids were never cited from mainland Portugal. They were however referenced for Azores, namely Polyxenus lagurus (Lin- naeus, 1758) at the islands of São Miguel and Pico (Condé & Nguyen Duy-Jacquemin, 1994) and Polyxenus fascicula- tus Say, 1821 in Madeira and Selvagens (Enghoff & Des- mond Kime, 2007; Enghoff, in prep.). -

The identification of 5 species from a recent collection of 23 specimens from two areas in Israel is given. Two new species of Polyxenida are recorded, including the first species in the family Synxenidae (Phryssonotus sp.) and the first species from the family Polyxenidae, subfamily Macroxeninae (Chilexenus sp.), from Israel. These spe- cies are identified only to genus due to the lack of undamaged adult material. Two species in the family Lophoprocti- dae are also identified, one previously recorded but not described, is now described as Lophoproctus israelensis sp. nov., and Lophoproctinus chichinii Condé, 1951is recorded from Israel for the first time. The fifth species is identified as possibly a new species in the genus Polyxenus and likely to be synonymous with the specimens identified as Polyx- enus lagurus Linnaeus, 1758 in a previous study. This is just the second collection from Israel to be identified and brings the total number of Polyxenida species found in Israel to 8. All 3 families of Polyxenida are represented in this list, together with all 3 subfamilies of the most numerous family, Polyxenidae. Keywords. We gathered at Twin Creeks in the evening for a barbecue dinner and went into the field just before dusk. One of the best times to collect millipedes is early spring on a warm, drizzly night. We knew it was a bit early in the year for things to be active but decided to use the opportunity for our first attempt. We divided into three teams, one team going to Metcalf Bottoms, one went to Ash Hopper trailhead and one Polyxenus fasciculatus. photo by James Cokendolpher worked across from the nature trail near Sugarlands. We sifted leaf litter and searched the residue for critters. We found ten species of millipedes repre- senting eight families. Dr. Richard Hoffman, an expert on Diplopoda who works with the Vir- ginia Museum of Natural History, is identifying and studying the millipede fauna of the Park for the All Taxa Biodiversity Inventory (ATBI). About 900 species have been described from the U.S. He estimates that about 50 to 60 species of millipedes will be found in the Park. This new epigean species differs very clearly in many structural details, being sufficiently distinct morphologically and disjunct geographically fromT. napoensis Nguyen, Sierwald & Marek, 2019, the type and sole species of Tonkinomeris Nguyen, Sierwald & Marek, 2019, which was described recently from northern Vietnam. The genus Tonkinomeris is formally relegated from Glomeri- dae and assigned to the family Glomeridellidae, which has hitherto been considered strictly Euro-Medi- terranean in distribution and is thus new to the diplopod faunas of China and Indochina. Tonkinomeris is re-diagnosed and shown to have perhaps the basalmost position in the family Glomeridellidae. -

Diplopods are commonly found in edaphic habitats, but can also be present in other types of environments including supralittoral zones. In Chile, there are few records of halophilic diplopods, but none of them are from supralittoral environments. Therefore, this study reports the first record of a halophilic diplopod belonging to the genus Polyxenus Latreille in Chile, which was collected from the rocky supralittoral of Cocholgüe, Biobío Region. The presence of these specimens in the supralittoral zone is discussed together with the possible peculiarities that this type of myriapods presents in this unusual ecosystem. Diplopoda — Taxonomic Overview
CHAPTER 16 DIPLOPODA — TAXONOMIC OVERVIEW BY HENRIK ENGHOFF, SERGEI GOLOVATCH, MEGAN SHORT, PAVEL STOEV AND THOMAS WESENER There is no widely accepted consensus about the classification of Diplopoda. The following account basically follows the arrangement by Shear (2011), deviations from this are specified. All currently recognized families are mentioned, and more or less exact numbers of known genera and species in each family are given, as well as the known geographical distribution. With more than 1800 recognized genera (1868 according to Shear, 2011) mentioning and characterizing them all would require a volume in itself. In the following treatment, which is exhaustive down to the families, all genera are mentioned only for some, mainly smaller orders, whereas only a selection of genera are mentioned for the large orders Polydesmida, Chordeumatida, Julida and Spirostreptida. Likewise, the amount of morphological detail varies greatly between orders, and this chapter cannot in general be used as an identification manual. For those genera which are listed, the (approximate) number of known species and the geographical distribution are given, and as a rule the name of at least one species per listed genus is included. Information on habits is included to a limited extent, e.g., if the members of the family/genus are cavernicolous. Only Recent taxa are treated here. For fossils see Chapter 14. C. • 1958 Publications of the United States National Museum The scientific publications of the National Museum include two series known, respectively, as Proceedings and Bulletin. The Proceedings series, begun in 1878, is intended primarily as a medium for the publication of original papers based on the collections of the National Museum, that set forth newly acquired facts in biology, anthropology, and geology, with descriptions of new forms and revisions of limited groups. Copies of each paper, in pamphlet form, are distributed as published to libraries and scientific organizations and to specialists and others interested in the different subjects. The dates at which these separate papers are published are recorded in the table of contents of each of the volumes. The series of Bulletins, the first of which was issued in 1875, contains separate publications comprising monographs of large zoological groups and other general systematic treatises (occasionally in several volumes), faunal works, reports of expeditions, catalogs of type specimens, special collections, and other material of similar nature. The majority of the volumes are octavo in size, but a quarto size has been adopted in a few in- stances. In the Bulletin series appear volumes under the heading Contribu- tions from the United States National Herbarium, in octavo form, published by the National Museum since 1902, which contain papers relating to the botanical collections of the Museum. -

ZooKeys 741: 133–154.https://doi.org/10.3897/zookeys.741.21814 Abstract Lophoturus queenslandicus Verhoeff, 1924 was the first penicillate millipede in the family Lophoproctidae collected from Cairns, a tropical region in Queensland, Australia, to be formally described. Specimens collected from this region in a recent study had the morphological characters known to define this genus. However, their body form and length, as well as dorsal colouration proved to be different, suggesting the possibility of more than one Lophoturus species. This assertion was supported by the results of a phylogenetic analysis of DNA extracted and sequenced using 18S and COI regions from L. queenslandicus and two undescribed species from this genus. Specimens preserved in ethanol can prove difficult to confidently identify to species level because their colour gradually fades.
