Selecting just a handful to showcase is almost impossible but with my hand forced I would suggest taking a closer look at Roundabout from Paines Plough. This is some of the finest contemporary theatre being presented in the UK and I’m proud we can return the company to Newbury. Equally, Pss Pss is absolutely worth seeing too; it is one of the funniest pieces of clowning I have seen but make sure you also take a peek at The Ballad of Martha Brown, He Had Hairy Hands, Irish House Party and Beauty of the Beast. There truly is something for everyone. And of course there is the annual pantomime; this year Dick Whittington! Full of all the usual magic, mischief and mayhem we have come to expect. Just make sure you book early. Plus from September we will be running the café at the Corn Exchange and I can announce we will be looking to introduce an evening menu. Keep your eyes (and bellies!) peeled for more information and enjoy your whole evening out with us. All the team look forward to welcoming you back very soon. • The Twenty Greatest Music Concerts I've Ever Seen
THE TWENTY GREATEST MUSIC CONCERTS I'VE EVER SEEN Whew, I'm done. Let me remind everyone how this worked. I would go through my Ipod in that weird Ipod alphabetical order and when I would come upon an artist that I have seen live, I would replay that concert in my head. (BTW, since this segment started I no longer even have an ipod. All my music is on my laptop and phone now.) The number you see at the end of the concert description is the number of times I have seen that artist live. If it was multiple times, I would do my best to describe the one concert that I considered to be their best. If no number appears, it means I only saw that artist once. Mind you, I have seen many artists live that I do not have a song by on my Ipod. That artist is not represented here. So although the final number of concerts I have seen came to 828 concerts (wow, 828!), the number is actually higher. And there are "bar" bands and artists (like LeCompt and Sam Butera, for example) where I have seen them perform hundreds of sets, but I counted those as "one," although I have seen Lecompt in "concert" also. Any show you see with the four stars (****) means they came damn close to being one of the Top Twenty, but they fell just short. So here's the Twenty. Enjoy and thanks so much for all of your input. And don't sue me if I have a date wrong here and there.

  • Freewheelin-On-Line Take Fourteen
freewheelin-on-line take fourteen Freewheelin’ 212 I have to say that I remained a rear view passenger when it came to this month’s cover. The person who was in the driving seat, with both hands firmly on the wheel, was Phil Townsend of lazycarrot.com., and what a great collage of colour and images Phil has produced. It is of course the cover of the programme for The Third Annual John Green Day to be held at The Moat House Hotel, Northampton on the 17th May 2003. In keeping with the theme of the day, Phil has designed a ‘folkie’ type cover, the photograph coming straight from 1963 when Carolyn Hester’s hair was flowing long and Dylan’s mop was tucked under his corduroy cap. It is not Dylan’s cap that catches my eye in this picture however but rather his shirt, or to be more precise, his shirtsleeves. The young folkie clearly means business: his sleeves are rolled up to his elbows in a working man’s stance. Being an avid watcher of Dylan images, I tried to recall any official album covers where Dylan has his sleeves rolled up. Strangely the first image that came to mind was not of Dylan but was of the rail road worker with the pick axe who appears on the cover of ‘Slow Train Coming’. That was perhaps the obvious one, but then: ‘Down In The Groove’ is a proper roll up; ‘Street Legal’ looks a little rolled and ‘Empire Burlesque’ is a kind of a jacket and shirt half roll.

Box River News Boxford • Edwardstone • Groton • Little Waldingfield • Newton Green May 2013 Vol 13 No 5 GROTON CHURCH ON TV IMAGES OF GROTON: THEN AND NOW Three inches of snow and icy roads were insufficient to deter the 40 or so parishioners who attended the village hall on Saturday 23rd March to see a fascinating slide show of old photographs of Groton. The photographs, going back to the 1890s and first shown in Boxford church during the Diamond Jubilee weekend in 2012, had been compiled by Groton’s history recorder, Jeremy Osborne, who provided interesting background details about many of the images, with additional comments being added by David Elliott. Prior to the show, there was an opportunity to look at other photographs and memorabilia on the display boards around the hall. Refreshments were provided by Pat Kennedy Scott and her famed catering team. Thank you to Jeremy and Pat and to all who made this another most enjoyable and successful evening, and one which had the added benefit of a welcome £302.50 boost to Groton church funds. We’ll also be launching our brand new folk music programme at New Greenham Arts, with gigs from some of the best new folk musicians around. Plus our outdoor events grow bigger and better with annual favourites Halloween Hullabaloo and the magical Winter Festival of Light lantern procession returning. With more than ever taking place on stage, we’re also encouraging people to spend more time using and enjoying our buildings. Over the coming months we’ve got more opportunities for you to join in and Get Involved with what we do, in particular the launch of our Arts and Culture Club including special off ers so you can come and see more performances and also have the chance to share your thoughts on the shows and fi lms you’ve seen. So, with entertainment legends like Harry Hill, Beverley Craven, Chris Packham and The Drifters as well as Vagina Monologues and more soap stars than seems possible arriving in Newbury for Soap Opera, there’s absolutely no reason to stay in, as this season is a chance to see the very best on your own doorstep!
