    The Presence of Performance and the Stakes of Serial Drama: Accrual, Transience, Companionship Elliott Logan MPhil (University of Queensland, 2013) BA, Hons (University of Queensland, 2009) BA (University of Queensland, 2007) A thesis submitted for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy at The University of Queensland in 2018 School of Communication and Arts Abstract This thesis shows how performance is a critically neglected but crucial aspect of serial television drama as an art form. One of serial drama’s obvious storytelling attractions is its ability to involve viewers in relationships between characters over long periods of time. Such involvement takes place through a recurring structure of episodes and seasons, whose unfolding reflects the extensive, ongoing history through which interpersonal bonds form and develop, deepen and decay. The characters we watch onscreen are embodied and performed by actors. Television studies, however, has persistently overlooked screen performance, hampering appreciation of serial drama’s affinity with long-term relationships as a resource for aesthetic significance. Redressing such neglect, this thesis directs new critical attention to expressive stylistic relationships between serial form, screen performance, and the subject of companionship in some recent US serial dramas. The focus of that attention is a particular aesthetic quality: the provisional, which emerges through serial drama’s distinctive tension between permanence and transience. In the first chapter, I argue that the provisional is central to an affinity between screen performance, seriality in television drama, and companionship as an aspect of human life. Chapters Two and Three then show how the art of the provisional in particular series has been underappreciated due to television studies’ neglect of performance and expressiveness as dimensions of serial form in television fiction.

    November/December 2019 North America/Europe Tour Diary Robert Forster November 8 2019 Greetings from LA. (Love writing that) I am back at the hotel after a wonderful show at Echoplex in LA. An incredibly warm audience - the show exceeded all my expectations. And great to be playing in the US again. We have lift-off. I meet some lovely people after the show. I am not allowed to sell any records or books on the road, but I am happy to sign records and books if you wish to bring them along. LA was groovy. A good friend drove me to Laurel Canyon, and we had coffee and a bagel at the famed Market Store there. Bob's 'John Wesley Harding' playing on the store stereo. Drove along Mulholland Drive. San Francisco tonight. November 9 2019 Greetings from San Francisco. Another amazing show. Two in a row. I could return to Australia right now and think this trip has already been totally worthwhile. The Swedish Hall was exactly the right place for me to play. The audience singing on 'Surfing Magazines' sounded amazing in the high dark wood hall. Thank you to everyone who came along. Didn't make City Lights Bookstore in North Beach after the show. A tough decision, but I have come back to the Hotel, to CNN, to packing, and good health for Portland tomorrow night.     AMC Hopes 'Breaking Bad' Fans Lawyer Up With 'Better Call Saul' 02.03.2015 Nearly a year and a half after the widely acclaimed series finale of AMC's beloved Breaking Bad, a new chapter is about to be written with spinoff prequel Better Call Saul. Expectations are high for the show, which reunites Bob Odenkirk's fan-favorite sleazy lawyer Saul Goodman (nee Jimmy McGill) with Breaking Bad co-creators Vince Gilligan and Peter Gould. Better Call Saul's campaign has been a marriage of moderation and deliberate escalation, a luxury AMC can take advantage of thanks to the show's pre-existing fanbase always hungry for information. AMC first teased the show with an 11-second promo way back on Sept. 21, and has since released a litany of sneak peeks, trailers and behind-the-scenes looks at the show, all of which have arrived almost weekly since November. As anticipation mounts, the promos have gotten longer and more in-depth, with extended trailers and detailed looks at the series hitting the Web in January. These promos have been the engine of AMC's extensive social media presence, but many have also aired across national cable and satellite networks. On Monday (Feb. 2), the latest of these, a "Meet the Characters" video featuring the cast and crew and introducing the Better Call Saul ensemble, arrived. AMC's Better Call Saul's marketing campaign mirrors the ubiquity of a small-town lawyer, writ large. Much like a real-life DUI attorney, Saul Goodman can be seen on billboards in Los Angeles and New York, with 2-sheets in subways and on buses in New York.
