A prequel to AMC’s “Breaking Bad,” the show stars Bob Odenkirk as a crooked-at-times attorney named Jimmy McGill. “He’s a likable guy and you like his character,” said Patrick Fitzsimmons, senior associate at Hodgson Russ LLP in Buffalo. “It’s a great show. Mike Ehrmantraut and The Profound Power of Silence We find a case of polar opposites in Better Call Saul, where two characters have sharply contrasting speaking styles. The character of Saul Goodman (Bob Odenkirk) is a chatterbox. The way the writers get Jimmy’s personality to pop and stand out is to put him in a room with somebody who doesn’t use words. In this example, that’s Mike Ehrmantraut (Jonathan Banks), a man of such few words that he speaks only when absolutely necessary. He doesn’t even have a lot of facial expressions or body language; instead he is a blank slate and we have no idea what he’s thinking. He’s completely poker faced and plays everything straight. And then, when he does take an action, it’s decisive. He doesn’t equivocate or waffle. In fact, he’s the opposite of Jimmy in just about every possible way. It was ingenious of Vince Gilligan and Peter Gould to give Mike a prominent role in Better Call Saul and Jimmy’s backstory, because we have the opportunity to learn a lot more about this laconic character. In this particular scene, Mike is called in and arrested. Two cops, one playing good cop, the other bad, !1 interrogate him. They try to work Mike and get him to crack, but in the entire scene, all Mike says is one word. INT. The Presence of Performance and the Stakes of Serial Drama: Accrual, Transience, Companionship Elliott Logan MPhil (University of Queensland, 2013) BA, Hons (University of Queensland, 2009) BA (University of Queensland, 2007) A thesis submitted for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy at The University of Queensland in 2018 School of Communication and Arts Abstract This thesis shows how performance is a critically neglected but crucial aspect of serial television drama as an art form. One of serial drama’s obvious storytelling attractions is its ability to involve viewers in relationships between characters over long periods of time. Such involvement takes place through a recurring structure of episodes and seasons, whose unfolding reflects the extensive, ongoing history through which interpersonal bonds form and develop, deepen and decay. The characters we watch onscreen are embodied and performed by actors. Television studies, however, has persistently overlooked screen performance, hampering appreciation of serial drama’s affinity with long-term relationships as a resource for aesthetic significance. Redressing such neglect, this thesis directs new critical attention to expressive stylistic relationships between serial form, screen performance, and the subject of companionship in some recent US serial dramas. The focus of that attention is a particular aesthetic quality: the provisional, which emerges through serial drama’s distinctive tension between permanence and transience. In the first chapter, I argue that the provisional is central to an affinity between screen performance, seriality in television drama, and companionship as an aspect of human life. Chapters Two and Three then show how the art of the provisional in particular series has been underappreciated due to television studies’ neglect of performance and expressiveness as dimensions of serial form in television fiction.

This could be one of those California "It's The Cheese" commercials. Except those commercials don't normally focus on cow shit. We do. TILT DOWN to a fat, round PATTY drying olive drab in the sun. Flies buzz. Peaceful and quiet. until ••• ZOOOM! WHEELS plow right through the shit with a SPLAT. NEW ANGLE - AN RV Is speeding smack-dab through the pasture, no road in sight. A bit out of place, to say the least. It's an old 70's era Winnebago with chalky white paint and Bondo spots. A bumper sticker for the Good Sam Club is stuck to the back. The Winnebago galumphs across the landscape, scattering cows. It catches a wheel and sprays a rooster tail of red dirt. INT. WINNEBAGO - DAY Inside, the DRIVER's knuckles cling white to the wheel. He's got the pedal flat. Scared, breathing fast. His eyes bug wide behind the faceplate of his gas mask. Oh, by the way, he's wearing a GAS MASK. That, and white jockey UNDERPANTS. Nothing else. Buckled in the seat beside him lolls a clothed PASSENGER, also wearing a gas mask. Blood streaks down from his ear, blotting his T-shirt. He's passed out cold. Behind them, the interior is a wreck. Beakers and buckets and flasks -- some kind of ad-hoc CHEMICAL LAB -- spill their noxious contents with every bump we hit.

It tells the story of the rise and fall of Walter White (Bryan Cranston), a mild-mannered chemistry teacher turned meth kingpin. He turns to a life of crime after having been diagnosed with terminal cancer, and he sees meth manufacturing as the most lucrative way to provide for his family. It has been nearly a decade since the series finale, yet it endures through sequel films, spin-offs, and online streaming. My thesis investigates the series’ staying power, and I would argue that lies in its thematic content. Breaking Bad is not just a straightforward story of one man’s descent into a life of crime, but it is also a mediation on dominant, repressive power structures. The series offers a look at these structures through the lens of race, gender, and disability through the actions of characters and their interactions with one another.
