Co-Chairs Aner & Rebecca Iglesias and Shone & Sherry Wang Welcome to the 30th Annual Crystal Ball, where we’ll “Celebrate Good Times” at an evening with Kool and the Gang!

We are so very proud to honor Patty and Mike Nijjar in recognition of all they have done for the hospital and the region. Patty is now serving her fourth term on the Foundation Board of Directors and has served on the Cardiac Council, Latino Outreach Committee, the Foundation Board Partners in Health annual giving program committee and served as Co-Chair of the Crystal Ball Committee. Mike and Patty have given generously to the Methodist Hospital Foundation, providing support for a multitude of hospital initiatives, and both have devoted the time, talent and resources needed to make the quality of life in our community even better.

Patty and Mike have never sought reward, but instead have quietly touched the lives of more people than we can imagine. None are more deserving of this recognition, or more humble about having received it. I know that Patty and Mike and the entire Nijjar family are touched by the tribute you pay them by your presence here this evening.

I also want to recognize the members of the 2019 Crystal Ball committee who have worked so hard to make this evening such a success. Co-chairs Aner and Rebecca Iglesias and Sherry and Shone Wang, and the members of their committee have dedicated themselves to making this an event to remember in support of Methodist Hospital and the compassionate, safe and high-quality healthcare it provides.

Finally, I want to thank you, our sponsors and guests for your generosity. Your support means that our physicians, nurses, staff members and volunteers can fulfill our mission and make a very real difference in the lives of those they care for.

Sincerely,

Dan F. Ausman President and CEO

CRYSTALBall ‘19 Welcome to the 30th Annual Crystal Ball. On behalf of the Methodist Hospital Foundation Board, I want to extend our sincerest gratitude for your generous support of Methodist Hospital through your attendance and sponsorship for this event.

Your noble and compassionate contributions this evening will enable Methodist Hospital to add a second biplane imaging system that will significantly enhance its ability to better serve the greater San Gabriel Valley as a fully-accredited Comprehensive Stroke Center and STEMI Receiving Center. The biplane imaging system features advanced technology that allows physicians to make swift and accurate decisions and save lives. Thank you for investing in Methodist Hospital and in the patients we serve. There is no greater gift than that of good health.

I want to congratulate Mike and Patty Nijjar on this recognition for their leadership and support of Methodist Hospital and our community. Their contributions have helped the hospital to provide exceptional care and best serve our community. I want to thank Crystal Ball Co-Chairs, Aner and Rebecca Iglesias, Shone and Sherry Wang, and the members of the Crystal Ball committee for their tireless efforts in making tonight such a success.

Thank you for your continued loyal support of Methodist Hospital, and it is my great pleasure to enjoy this delightful evening with you.

Sincerely,

You’re in for a wonderful evening of great food and great entertainment in support of a great hospital. This event wouldn’t happen, though, without you - our guests and sponsors. As participants and donors, you’re supporting world-class healthcare in the San Gabriel Valley, which means everything to our patients and their families, and on their behalf, I thank you.

Tonight we are honored to recognize and thank Patty and Mike Nijjar. They have done so much to support Methodist Hospital and the community, making a difference in innumerable ways to their neighbors across the region. I can’t think of a more deserving couple and I am grateful we have the chance to recognize them.

The committee under their leadership began planning several months ago to create this wonderful evening. I want to offer my heartfelt thanks for the leadership and generosity of our co-chairs and their committee.

Finally, you should know that this event will help the hospital purchase a second bi-plane imaging system, critical to the treatment of the stroke and cardiac patients who come to us in their greatest hour of need. You’re helping to make possible life-saving care and for that I am most grateful.

Thank you again for being here and thank you for your very generous support. I hope you have wonderful evening.

CRYSTALBall ‘19 Supporting Life Saving Care at Methodist Hospital

Methodist Hospital of Southern California is very proud of being one of only 18 hospitals designated by Los Angeles County as a Comprehensive Stroke Center. This means that Methodist Hospital is prepared to fully treat all stroke patients on-site with the most advanced, appropriate level of care. Such comprehensive care includes not only diagnosis and treatment by highly specialized physicians, but also the use of equipment and technology that enables our physicians to perform highly complex procedures, including clot extraction and coiling of aneurysms.

Strokes are a leading cause of death and long-term disability in the United States. On average, every 40 seconds someone in the United States has a stroke. In order to survive, immediate care at an approved stroke center is critical.

To meet the growing needs of our community, Methodist Hospital has need for a second bi-plane imaging system, a key piece of equipment necessary for performing these life-saving procedures. The cost of acquiring this new equipment is approximately $3.5 million. Hospital Cause In 2018, Methodist Hospital treated over 2,000 patients in our angiography suites, providing life-saving procedures to stroke, as well as heart attack patients. As an accredited Comprehensive Stroke Center since early 2018, Methodist has experienced significant growth in the number of stroke patients brought to our emergency room. To enable the hospital to meet the needs of these patients, Methodist must acquire an additional bi-plane imaging system to ensure sufficient capacity and availability of this critical technology.

Help us ensure that we always have the capability to care for any of our community members who come through our doors. We look forward to being there for you whenever the need arises.

Thank you from all of us at Methodist Hospital for your support.

Patty was born in Colombia, South America into a prominent musical family. Mike was born in India and immigrated to the United States as a teenager along with his mother and three siblings, where his family started life again with very humble beginnings.

Yet amazingly, they almost never met. Patty and Mike first saw each other at Yosemite National Park back in their youth and it was love at first sight. In spite of language and cultural barriers—Patty didn’t speak English and Mike’s parents wanted him to marry a girl from India—they married just a few months later and eventually settled in Arcadia to raise their three sons, who were all born at Methodist Hospital.

When the couple came together, they realized they shared similar dreams and values – especially the importance of family. While Patty was still attending college, they started a real estate company together, and with the help of Mike’s brother Pete and sister Daljit Kler, they worked hard and built a very successful business. Their company’s mission is to provide workforce housing and serve the underserved.

“I always said to myself that if I became successful in business, I wanted to do everything I could to support others. So this year, our goal is to raise $1 million at Crystal Ball,” says Patty, who along with husband Mike, is unrelenting in her philanthropic quest to help others.

Donations at Crystal Ball will support the addition of a second Patty and Mike Nijjar biplane imaging system to enhance Methodist Hospital’s ability to serve the Greater San Gabriel Valley as a fully accredited Crystal Ball 2019 Comprehensive Stroke Center and STEMI Receiving Center. Methodist Hospital is one of only 18 hospitals to be part of the Honorees Los Angeles County network of approved stroke centers countywide. “Crystal Ball brings people together in a unique way to celebrate the community that is the beating heart of Methodist Hospital,” says Patty. “The event is a joyful occasion and reminds everyone of the significant work that the hospital does, while raising funds for the community it supports.”

A devoted mother and community volunteer, Patty served in many positions at the Clairbourn School and Flintridge Prep High School. Sharing the passions of their youth, she and Mike lead an ardent hockey and music family, supporting many community organizations in both fields over the years.

“In the past, I played roller hockey, Mike has played field hockey, and we are 41-year season ticket holders with the Los Angeles Kings,” says Patty. They recently split their allegiance between the Kings and the Las Vegas Golden Knights, after their sons became part owners of the new franchise.

Patty was a dedicated hockey mom to her sons, and to this day manages a professional roller hockey team. Their teams have won several national championships. Patty is a second mom to many of her hockey players and she and Mike encourage their players beyond the rink. They have arranged and supported fundraisers for players in times of medical need and they encourage their players to plan CRYSTALBall ‘19 their futures outside of hockey. In addition to her love of hockey, Patty is also passionate about music. Her father was a band leader and her mother was an opera singer. Patty pursued her lifelong love of music, and although no longer performing, she continues to support various music organizations.

Patty was first introduced to Methodist Hospital when her sons were born here. Later her dear friend and neighbor, Dr. Bashir Ahmad, encouraged her to become involved with the Methodist Hospital Family and she served as a member of the Foundation Board for 12 years, as well as on the Foundation Partners in Health Committee, and Crystal Ball Committee. She is a long-term supporter and attendee of the Crystal Ball, which combined both her love of music and the importance of raising funds and awareness. Most recently she has served on the Latino Outreach Committee.

“While I spend much of my time running our family business, I do everything I can to support Patty with all her community and philanthropic endeavors,” says Mike. “Patty has brought good luck to me throughout our life together. She supports me in our business and real estate endeavors, and much of our success is because of who she is and what she does for other people.”

Health and fitness are very important to Patty. Through her work as a member of the Methodist Hospital Foundation Board of Directors, she realizes how important it is for people to remain active and mobile. She wants to do all she can to support the hos- Patty and Mike Nijjar pital with these efforts, especially with Crystal Ball. Crystal Ball 2019 “We are so proud to honor Patty and Mike Nijjar for this very special 30th anniversary Crystal Ball,” says Michael Driebe, Honorees President of the Methodist Hospital Foundation. “Patty and Mike are tremendous supporters and advocates on behalf of the hospital. Patty is extremely passionate with her support for our Foundation and she and Mike have brought an incredible amount of philanthropy to the hospital through their numerous relationships throughout the region.”

Says Patty: “We hope the community will continue to support Methodist Hospital generously to enable everyone to live in good health and live their American dream. We are grateful for this special recognition and invite everyone here this evening to Celebrate alongside us.”

CRYSTALBall ‘19 Aner and Rebecca Iglesias believe in giving back and have generously agreed to serve as Crystal Ball event co-chairs for this year’s 30th annual gala.

“We’ve attended Crystal Ball for the past decade and were so happy to hear that our dear friends Mike and Patty Nijjar were going to be honored at this year’s gala,” says Rebecca. “We are thrilled and humbled to be selected to co-chair and support this good cause benefitting Methodist Hospital.”

“Patty and Mike are very generous, kind, goodhearted people and this recognition is well deserved, “says Rebecca. “We always look forward to seeing old friends and meeting new friends at this fun event.”

The Crystal Ball Committee has an ambitious goal to raise $1 million at this year’s very special 30th anniversary gala.

“We will all need a great hospital at some point in our lives to care for us or our family members, so we need to get the entire community involved with supporting Crystal Ball,” Aner says. He served on the Methodist Hospital Foundation Board of Directors from 2009 to 2017 and continues to be involved with garnering support for the hospital.

Aner is originally from a small tobacco town in Pinar del Rio, Cuba; called Pilotos where he spent most of his childhood. He left Cuba at the age of 11 to reunite with his father, who left Cuba when Aner was three years old. Upon arriving in America, he quickly made Los Angeles his hometown. He began working at his uncle’s grocery store in Pasadena which for most of his youth was part of his daily life. In school, he studied electrical engineering, but his passion for the grocery business became his career. Aner went on to become the founder and president of locally operated Baja Ranch Market chain in 1979. Baja Ranch are neighborhood grocery stores focused on providing high quality food products at the lowest prices while specializing in distinctive foods from places like the Caribbean, Central America, South America and Spain. Aner and Rebecca Along the way, Aner was introduced to his lovely wife Rebecca who is of Mexican descent, born in Northern California and raised in Zacatecas, Mexico. The couple met at work and married 21 years ago. They reside in Iglesias Bradbury and have five children and three grandchildren. Co- Chairs Although Rebecca has been a full time wife and mother, she is a board member of Catholic Latino Leaders and has co-chaired the St. Monica Academy Annual Gala, where their daughter attends school. She has always supported Aner in all of his charity works, including their collective support of Methodist Hospital during the past decade.

In addition to their work with Methodist Hospital, Aner has always been active with numerous national and local organizations, including the National Catholic Association of Latino Leaders, Los Angeles Ronald McDonald House, Loyola Latino Alumni Association, the Nuestra Senora de Los Angeles Foundation, and he is an Honorary Consul of the Republic of El Salvador in Las Vegas. Their philanthropic work includes rebuilding a church in Pinar del Rio in Cuba, as well as working to rebuild and remodel another 17 churches in Cuba. As passionate advocates of human rights, Aner supports the freedom of all oppressed people and hopes to one day return to a free Cuba.

For now, they are content to support their local community whenever possible.

“It’s been amazing to see the evolution of Crystal Ball over the years. It’s an incredible event,” says Aner. “It’s a ‘status’ event for the entire San Gabriel Valley. I always hear people talking about it. Crystal Ball has developed a great reputation and we are so proud to support this wonderful endeavor.” CRYSTALBall ‘19 Sherry and Shone Wang have graciously given their time, energy and philanthropy to Methodist Hospital for more than two decades while always trying to avoid attention. After serving as Crystal Ball honorees in 2018, they graciously agreed to serve as Crystal Ball event co-chairs for this year’s 30th annual gala.

“We feel a passion to serve the hospital,” says Shone. “When the hospital calls, we answer. Our role as co-chairs is just one part of the overall team effort involved in making the Crystal Ball a successful event.”

The Wangs have always given unselfishly of their time and philanthropy, especially to Methodist Hospital. Working behind the scenes — and some- times reluctantly sharing in the spotlight — the Wangs’ contributions are numerous. Sherry and Shone helped cofound Methodist Hospital’s Annual Community Health Fair aimed at serving the Asian population, while also participating in many Hospital and Foundation committees. Sherry has served on the Methodist Hospital Foundation Board since 2008 while also holding numerous leadership roles along the way including serving as chair in 2016. Sherry has co-chaired the hospital’s Mardi Gras event which has raised over $600,000 for the hospital during her tenure. In addition, she has served on the Foundation’s Partners in Health Committee.

Sadly, the Wangs’ connection to Methodist Hospital initially emerged out of tragic circumstances when in 1997, their 8-year-old son, Jesse, collapsed at school. He was taken by ambulance to Methodist Hospital where he died of undetermined causes. Sherry and Shone still can recall every detail of their experience and speak highly of the hospital staff’s sensitivity and care for their family during this devastating time in their lives.

Two decades later, you can still feel the pain in their hearts when they speak of their loss, but the family has persevered. Sherry & Shone’s middle son Jeremiah is now an emergency medicine physician after graduating recently from the Keck School of Medicine at USC, and their youngest son Cameron graduated from Arcadia High School in 2018 and is now in Sherry and Shone college. Both sons speak three languages fluently — English, Spanish and Mandarin — which comes in handy when they volunteer with their parents Wang at health fairs sponsored by the hospital. Sherry and Shone founded the Community Health Fair in 2001 in honor Co- Chairs of Jesse’s memory and eventually, with their friends from Hsi Lai Temple in Hacienda Heights, moved the health fair to Methodist Hospital in 2004. The family volunteers their time working at the event each year which attracts more than 600 participants annually. The project is hosted jointly with the leadership and volunteer efforts of the Hsi Lai Temple.

“Sherry and Shone have been loyal and generous donors through the years and we are so grateful for everything they have helped make possible,” says Michael Driebe, President of the Methodist Hospital Foundation. “Sherry is a tremendous advocate for Methodist Hospital, working quietly behind the scenes to share the hospital’s story and build connections with the community we serve. She has been especially helpful in reaching out to the Chinese community.”

The couple has always been supportive of activities throughout Arcadia, and Sherry was asked to serve on the hospital’s Bioethics Committee as a community representative to the group. She continues to serve on the Bioethics Committee and spearheaded development of educational training for hospital staff to better understand the needs and cultural differences when treating patients from the Asian community.

“We never sought or expected recognition for our efforts,” says Sherry. “We are just doing what we all should be doing in our own way. Service is CRYSTALBall ‘19 in everyone’s blood, we just have to show it.” Methodist Hospital Foundation 2019 Board of Directors Officers Chair: Susan Woo Chair Elect: Richard Bukata, M.D. Treasurer: Tom Hoffman, J.D. Dear Mr. Driebe and Friends of the Methodist Hospital Foundation:

I would like to offer my best wishes as you gather for the Methodist Hospital Foundation’s 30th Annual Crystal Ball.

Founded in 1903, Methodist Hospital of Southern California has been effectively serving the residents of the San Gabriel Valley with compassionate, high quality, innovative health care services. For over half a century, the Methodist Hospital Foundation has been providing generous support to the hospital and its programs.

I would like to extend my congratulations to tonight’s outstanding honorees, Mike and Patty Nijjar. When Patty Nijjar joined the Methodist Hospital Foundation in 2009 to honor her close friend who passed away, Dr. Bashir Ahmed, the foundation gained an invaluable, devoted member. Patty Nijjar has served on the Cardiac Council, Latino Outreach Committee, the Foundation Board Partners in Health annual giving program committee and served as Co-Chair of the Crystal Ball Committee. Mike and Patty have given generously to the Methodist Hospital Foundation, providing support for a multitude of hospital initiatives. As former roller hockey players, Patty and Mike advocate for the importance of health and fitness, recognizing that remaining active and mobile is essential for maintaining physical wellbeing.

Mike and Patty Nijjar have supported the hospital for many years through their philanthropy and volunteer work, and I commend them for their exceptional leadership and community service. Best wishes for a successful event!

Sincerely,  ADAM B. SCHIFF Member of Congress

Methodist Hospital Foundation 300 West Huntington Drive Arcadia, CA 91066

Dear Methodist Hospital Foundation:

It is a great honor and pleasure to congratulate Methodist Hospital Foundation on its 30th Annual Crystal Ball and the recipients of the Outstanding Community Leaders award!

Tonight, Methodist Hospital will honor two individuals that have made tremendous contributions towards furthering the Foundation’s mission. I would like to congratulate Mike and Patty Nijjar and recognize their outstanding work. Their countless years of dedicated service and leadership is the true meaning of community leaders.

For the past 10 years, both Mike and Patty have donated generously to Methodist Hospital Foundation in support of many hospital initiatives, including special events. Patty has been a member of the Cardiac Council, Latino Outreach Committee, Foundation Board Partners in Health, and co-chaired the 2018 Crystal Ball committee. Mike and Patty were former roller hockey players and today, manage a professional traveling hockey team.

Once again, congratulations to the honorees and to the Methodist Hospital Foundation and thank you to those who worked hard to make this event a tremendous success.

Warmest Regards,

Jason Pu Mayor
