  • Abstract One Love: Collective Consciousness in Rap and Poetry
Abstract One Love: Collective Consciousness in Rap and Poetry of the Hip-Hop Generation by Austin Harold Hart April, 2012 Thesis Director: John Hoppenthaler Major Department: English (Literature and Poetry) This study aims to offer an understanding of hip-hop culture through which three concepts are elucidated: (1) the existence and dimensions of a collective consciousness within rap and poetry of the hip-hop generation (Allison Joseph, A. Van Jordan, Terrance Hayes, Major Jackson, Taylor Mali, and Kevin Coval); (2) a poetics of rap—to parallel the influence seen/suggested among the selected poets; and (3) an analysis of the manner(s) in which the poetry of these more serious, academic artists reflects an influence of hip-hop culture. My thesis suggests that these poets are indeed influenced by the culture in which they grew up, and in their verse, this influence can be seen through linguistic playfulness, sonic density, layered meaning and usage through form and content, and the connection to a larger cultural, collective consciousness fed by specific social bodies. Poetic analysis, as well as studies of vernacular and oral traditions, has allowed me to explore these concepts and theories from a wider spectrum, and with regard to the work of the poets, an original perspective. Providing a deeper understanding of artists, their identities, places, and dreams within their work, this study begins to offer some insight into notions of the ways in which individuals might participate in cultural conservation.
Busta Rhymes. Leaders of the New School (LONS), LONS, A Future Without Past. T.I.M.E. (The Inner Mind's Eye),

  • 00:00:00 Music Transition “Crown Ones” Off the Album Stepfather by People Under the Stairs
00:00:00 Music Transition “Crown Ones” off the album Stepfather by People Under The Stairs. Chill, grooving instrumentals. 00:00:05 Oliver Host Hello, I’m Oliver Wang. 00:00:07 Morgan Host And I’m Morgan Rhodes. You’re listening to Heat Rocks. Like the rest of you, we are all in our social distancing mode, and this of course is an unprecedented time of isolation and anxiety. And I know many of us, myself included, are turning to art and culture as a way to stay sane and connected and inspired. As such, we wanted to create a few episodes around the idea of comfort music, and we’ve already been engaging with all of you in our audience about it. 00:00:31 Oliver Host To tackle this, we will be using a format that Morgan helped to inspire, the Starting Five, which is both a reference to basketball as well as a nod to those five-CD changers that used to be all the range back in the 1990s. And so both Morgan and I chose five albums, and the last episode you heard her starting five. And today, it’s gonna be my five in terms fo what constitutes my idea of comfort music. 00:00:56 Morgan Host In the third installment, that airs next week, we’ll be choosing a starting five from suggestions that you, our audience, has made via our various social media accounts. So, you asked me and now I’m asking you, what is your definition of comfort music, or what does comfort music really mean to you, especially now? 00:01:15 Oliver Host I really enjoyed hearing what you had to say last week in terms of the albums or the music that reminded you of falling in love wit music, or just falling in love in general.

  • “No Good, Cause I'm So Hood”
“No good, cause I’m so hood” Een visuele en tekstuele analyse van het groteske zwarte lichaam in hip-hop Thomas van ’t Groenewout Begeleider: Sara Janssen Masterscriptie Kunst- en Cultuurwetenschappen MA Creative Industries Radboud Universiteit Nijmegen 19 juli, 2019 Abstract: This thesis analyses three hip-hop songs and their accompanying video’s in order to discuss the grotesque elements that are contained within and the reactions that they provoke. Hip-hop and the grotesque have not yet been connected in academic literature. The central claim of this research is that hip- hop, in its most visible and generally recognizable form, should be considered a grotesque art form, and that looking at hip-hop in such a way helps us better understand the complex ways in which hip-hop portrays the complicated position of the Afro-American male in contemporary American society. Besides improving our understanding of hip-hop, this research will expand upon the political possibilities of the grotesque as discussed by Francesca Granata, further showing the ways in which the grotesque can serve as a way for marginalised voices to negotiate societal structures and present new alternatives. The main research question is: ‘how can the workings of hip-hop be better understood by placing the grotesque in hip-hop?’ This research finds that hip-hop can definitely be considered a grotesque art form, through the way hip-hop transforms the body in both physical as well as social ways, through the way it shows and restructures social hierarchies, and through its ambivalence as being funny and self-aware, yet terrifying and performative at the same time.

ABSTRACT Title of Thesis: FULL CIRCLE: BRIDGING THE GAP Christopher Phillip Law Masters of Fine Arts, 2017 Thesis Directed By: Professor Karen Bradley, School of Theater, Dance, and Performance Studies As an MFA candidate at the University of Maryland College Park's School of Theatre, Dance, and Performance Studies, I used Hip-Hop and Modern dance to address cycles that have been recurring throughout American history since Congress’ abolishment of slavery in 1865. However, the events depicted were told from the perspective of Americans between the ages of 19 and 33. Each story served as a moment for the audience to assess themselves, this country, and the recent events that have shaped our experiences. The concert was performed in the round to pay homage to Hip-Hop's practice of the "Cypher" (performance exchange within a circular gathering of people). Within the cypher, my goal was to encourage dialogue concerning issues of race, gender, community, and police brutality. My thesis concert was entitled, “Full Circle: Bridging the Gap,” and was presented on December 9th, 10th, and 11th of 2016. FULL CIRCLE: BRIDGING THE GAP by Christopher Phillip Law Thesis submitted to the Faculty of the Graduate School of the University of Maryland, College Park, in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Masters of Fine Arts 2017 Advisory Committee: Professor Karen Bradley, Chair Professor Miriam Phillips Associate Professor Alvin Mayes Associate Professor Sara Pearson © Copyright by Christopher Phillip Law 2017 Acknowledgements First and foremost, thank you to the Creator for life itself.
