They were known by telling for ages because the Eskimo language was not written. Now many of these stories are being written and published. The ability to read and write is a great treasure to the Eskimo people. It is possible to record the history of our people for all the generations to come. Many thanks to the schools and to the teachers who have given us this gift of learning .. 3 About the Tales These stories tell of things that were accom- in mind that these stories were originally meant plished through supernatural power. Animals for both entertainment and instruction. Today were given the power to talk. Long ago, people they serve the same purpose. didn't have the knowledge we have today. They tried to explain the events which took place around them as best they could. And they often attributed these events to supernatural powers which were held by people or animals. I'm glad that we don't rely on supernatural powers anymore. They were scary and awful. The people of long ago worshiped many dif- ferent things. But today we are happy to know of God from the Bible. Now worship is beautiful and not scary anymore. In these tales, animals talk. By listening to their words, we learn a lesson. This was the way our wise old elders taught us. It was easier to laugh at the foolishness of an animal than it was to be told of our own faults. And we could accept the wise council of an animal more easily than the warnings of our elders. Time has not changed us so much; it is still easier and more pleasant to gain our knowledge indirectly.     "RAIDERS OF THE LOST ARK" Story Conference Transcript January 23, 1978 thru January 27, 1978 George Lucas, Steven Spielberg, Larry Kasdan "RAIDERS" — TAPE ONE G — We'll just talk general ideas, what the concept of it was. Then I'll get down to going specifically through the story. Then we will actually get to where we can start talking down scenes, in the end I want to end up with a list of scenes. And the way I work generally is I figure a code, a general measuring stick parameter. I can either come up with thirty scenes or sixty scenes depending on which scale you want to work on. A thirty scene thing means that each scene is going to be around four pages long. A sixty one means that every scene is going to run twenty pages long. (?) It depends on, part of it is the... (short gap in the tape) knock some of these out, and this doesn't work out the way we thought it would. You can move things around, but it generally gives you an idea, assuming that what we really want at the end of all this is a hundred and twenty page script, or less. But that's where we really want to go. Then we figure out vaguely what the pace of, how fast it's going to move and how we're going to do it. I have a tendency to work rather mathematically about all this stuff. I found it easier and it does lay things out. Especially a thing like this.

Witzke: Reading Greek and Roman New Comedy Through Oscar Wilde’s Society Plays (Under the direction of Sharon L. James) This dissertation provides the first extended analysis of the influence of Greek and Roman New Comedy on Oscar Wilde’s Society Plays and of the ways in which Wilde adapted the ancient plays he studied in school. Equally, I argue that reading Wilde’s Society Plays can offer new ways of appreciating themes and conflicts in the ancient material. Wilde—ultimately interested in the individual and his place in society—uses New Comedy to explore the ways in which the individual can develop while mired in the hypocrisies of those around him. Conventional morality often comes under fire, as Wilde demonstrates the lip service paid to traditional morality. Wilde also interrogates the ancient New Comedies he adapted: these plays were considered not only funny, but mimetic in their day, with valuable messages. Wilde identifies what is amusing in them, but also sees what is serious or thought-provoking—elements that must have been obvious to ancient viewers, but went underappreciated in Wilde’s time, and indeed our own.
