Bill Clark

Bill Clark is a broadcaster and a statesman for the industry. During his 42 years in , Bill Clark has been deeply involved in the culture and direction of the industry. In the vernacular of the day, Bill has been a “go-to guy” whenever the industry has needed sound leadership in periods of dynamic change.

Bill Clark’s radio career began after graduation from Washington State University following two years in the Army. He started as a newsman at WERI/ Westerly, RI. During his career he served in management capacities with King Broadcasting in Seattle, Mclendon Broadcasting at KABL-AM & FM in San Francisco and Starr Broadcasting when it purchased KABL in 1973. When Starr became Shamrock Broadcasting in 1979, Clark became the president of the nine-station radio division. The company grew to 21 stations under Clark’s leadership with outlets in New York, Los Angeles, San Francisco, Detroit, Atlanta, Dallas, Houston, Phoenix, Denver, Kansas City and Minneapolis. In 1993, prior to the radio consolidation that would come later in the decade, Broadcasting & Cable referred to Shamrock as a “super group” based upon its size. Prior to the company being sold to Chancellor Broadcasting in 1996, Clark was Chairman of Shamrock with responsibilities for both radio and television.

Clark’s career contributions as an industry statesman are numerous. He was chairman of the National Radio Broadcasters Association in 1981 when it was a separate radio trade association. He was the chief negotiator for the NRBA during talks that led to its merger with the National Association of Broadcasters in 1986. Clark became the NRBA designate to the NAB Radio Executive Committee, which was formed as part of that merger. Twelve NRBA board members, including Clark, chosen as NAB directors as part of that agreement. The merger united the radio industry with the NAB for the first time since 1975, when the NRBA was formed as an outgrowth of the National Association of FM Broadcasters.

Clark served for ten years as a member of the Radio Advertising Bureau Executive Committee. He received the NAB Radio Award in 1991 and was named Broadcaster of the Year in 1992. He was president of the Northern California Broadcasters Association and a director of the California Broadcasters Association. He was the first individual selected by a major group broadcaster to act as a license trustee during station exchanges and sales that came about as the result of radio consolidation. He has acted in that capacity on several ensuing occasions. Congratulations Bobby!

Womble Bond Dickinson congratulates Bobby Caldwell, a recipient of this year’s Broadcasters Foundation of America Leadership Award. It is an honor and a pleasure to have assisted Bobby in growing his formidable group of radio stations.
