  • Koel Chatterjee Phd Thesis
Bollywood Shakespeares from Gulzar to Bhardwaj: Adapting, Assimilating and Culturalizing the Bard Koel Chatterjee PhD Thesis 10 October, 2017 I, Koel Chatterjee, hereby declare that this thesis and the work presented in it is entirely my own. Where I have consulted the work of others, this is always clearly stated. Signed: Date: 10th October, 2017 Acknowledgements This thesis would not have been possible without the patience and guidance of my supervisor Dr Deana Rankin. Without her ability to keep me focused despite my never-ending projects and her continuous support during my many illnesses throughout these last five years, this thesis would still be a work in progress. I would also like to thank Dr. Ewan Fernie who inspired me to work on Shakespeare and Bollywood during my MA at Royal Holloway and Dr. Christie Carson who encouraged me to pursue a PhD after six years of being away from academia, as well as Poonam Trivedi, whose work on Filmi Shakespeares inspired my research. I thank Dr. Varsha Panjwani for mentoring me through the last three years, for the words of encouragement and support every time I doubted myself, and for the stimulating discussions that helped shape this thesis. Last but not the least, I thank my family: my grandfather Dr Somesh Chandra Bhattacharya, who made it possible for me to follow my dreams; my mother Manasi Chatterjee, who taught me to work harder when the going got tough; my sister, Payel Chatterjee, for forcing me to watch countless terrible Bollywood films; and my father, Bidyut Behari Chatterjee, whose impromptu recitations of Shakespeare to underline a thought or an emotion have led me inevitably to becoming a Shakespeare scholar.

  • Speaking Through Troubled Times
Speaking through Troubled Times Moinak Biswas I would like to talk about the encounter between cinema and a moment in our political history in this essay. Is it possible to identify the voices that cinema sifts out of a time, and make them narrate to us a story that was there in the films but not told? I would like to ask that question about the cusp of the nineteen sixties and seventies. 1. There now exists a sizeable literature on the relationship between history and cinema. Academic historians have looked at the relationship mainly in terms of representation of the past. The fragile status that facts attain in a popular medium was the starting point of historians’ serious engagement with film, the more sophisticated version of which took up the issue of concretization of the past on screen, the process of giving body to a time that is gone, and the necessary ambivalence that it brings on. The other focus of the discussion has been narrative of course, the relationship of the events in history as they appear on screen. Since the larger historians’ debate had narrative as the cardinal point of contention - narrativity as a category came to problematize the entire question of truth-telling in historiography in the wake of semiotic criticism - the filmic imperatives of sequencing of events from the past has been another cause of concern. Professional historians such as Natalie Davis and Robert Rosenstone have written on these questions quite extensively [1], as have Daniel Walkowitz, R. C. Raack and Robert Brent Toplin, all of whom have developed strong ties with film and television production, as advisors and screenwriters [2].

"Light Your Cigarette with My Heart's Fire, My Love": Raunchy Dances and a Golden- hearted Prostitute in Bhardwaj's Omkara (2006) Madhavi Biswas, University of Texas Dallas Abstract This essay argues that Omkara (dir. Vishal Bhardwaj, 2006) foregrounds contemporary gender concerns in modern, small-town India, primarily through the film's reformulation of the three female roles in Othello. Billo/Bianca, played by a glamorous, contemporary, female star, gets her own romance and two popular and raunchy song-and-dance tracks in Omkara. These dance tracks are a peculiar mixture of traditional folk Nautanki and identifiable Bollywood masala "item numbers," whose layered lyrics have been penned by Gulzar, a well-known poet, lyricist, scriptwriter, and ex-film-director who closely collaborates with Bhardwaj. The essay argues for the recognition of the songs in Omkara as a parallel narrative that intertwines with and intersects the central narrative of the plot, inflecting it with a range of cultural and social intertexts, along with a dash of metatextual flavor. The article examines how the two song-and-dance sequences by Billo/Bianca in the film use the familiar tropes of the "courtesan" figure of Hindi films and draw upon traditional folk-theater — reflecting both its local poetry and its vulgarity — to evoke a new kind of verbal and visual "realism" that intertwines Bollywood glamor with local histories. Omkara, with its big budget stars, glossy production values, and popular song- and-dance numbers interspersing the narrative — elements that are often associated with the "Bollywood" style of Hindi cinema — is the most obviously commercial of Vishal Bhardwaj's three Shakespearean adaptations.

The peerless thespian was nominated for the National Award once, for his performance in Gautam Ghose’s Dekh a, but had declined the award while other awards, titles, felicitations and tributes kept flowing in. This includes the Padma Bhushan, a BBC documentary on his life and works called Gaach , meaning ‘tree’ and the Sangeet Natak Akademi Award for his contribution to theatre. He has directed and acted in more than 10 significant plays with Soumitra Chatterjee has acted in about 300 films some successful shows abroad. Today, he takes the National Award for Best Actor for his performance in Suman Ghosh’s Padakkhep in his stride with the quiet calm that is this actor’s hallmark. "A serious interest in cinema started with the first Film Festival held in Calcutta after my parents shifted to Calcutta from Howrah. For the first time, I watched Bicycle Thieves , Miracle in Milan , Fall of Berlin , with friends equally interested in cinema. These films changed my entire thinking about cinema. We saw Renoir’s River , shot completely in India.

  • Memories of Development: the Fantastic Non-Presence of Kolkata in Post-Liberalization Bangla Cinema
Memories of Development: The Fantastic Non-Presence of Kolkata in Post-Liberalization Bangla Cinema Sovan Tarafder When Marcel Carne, in an explicit tone of frustration, asked, ‘When will the cinema go down into the street?’ [1] , he wanted something real as opposed to the artificiality of the sets. This question, put forward in Paris way back in the 1930s, seems to have gained some relevance in present-day Kolkata. One could re-phrase the question as ‘When will Bangla cinema get back into the streets of Kolkata?’ This question springs from the fact that the visual geography of Bangla cinema, in post-liberalization phase, has mostly got rid of the spatial specificity of Kolkata, though one hardly fails to notice the distinct neo-urban turn which has manifested itself in the Bangla cinema of this period. Previously, the journey to the city, in all probabilities, used to be a journey to Kolkata (the then Calcutta). And once set within the spatial ambit of the city, films used to have ample references to the city, be it the bustling downtown or the serene locality in the suburbs. The city that was: outdoor Earlier, while depicting the urban zone, Bangla films used to show spaces that had unmistakable references of Kolkata. Clichéd as they often were, those images nonetheless charted the route of the protagonists wandering about in the city. So, the Red Road, Brigade Parade Ground, Victoria Memorial or Howrah Bridge used to recur as locations, while the dingy by- lanes, with small, claustrophobic rooms of lower middle class households on both sides, also made their appearance.

  • Sangeeta Datta, Kaustav Bakshi & Rohit K Dasgupta the Game
THE WORLD OF RITUPARNO GHOSH: TEXTS, CONTEXTS AND TRANGRESSIONS Sangeeta Datta, Kaustav Bakshi & Rohit K Dasgupta The game-changer Rituparno Ghosh (1961-2013) was a filmmaker, lyricist and writer who emerged on the cultural scene of Bengal as a copywriter of a Kolkata-based advertising firm in the eighties. He made a mark for himself in the world of commercials, winning several awards for Response, the agency he worked for. After directing two documentaries for Doordarshan (National television), he graduated into filmmaking with Hirer Angti (Diamond Ring, 1992), which was critically acclaimed but failed to get a commercial release. For his second film, Ghosh collaborated with Aparna Sen and Renu Roy to form Spandan Films which produced Unishey April (19th April, 1995). The film won the National Award for the Best Film and when it hit the screens in the summer of 1995 it remarkably changed the experience of cinema for the middleclass Bengali bhadrolok.1 Ghosh arrived at a time when Bengali cinema was going through a particularly difficult phase. Satyajit Ray had passed away in 1992, leaving behind him a vacuum which seemed difficult to fill. Although Goutam Ghose, Aparna Sen and Buddhadeb Dasgupta tried to carry forward the legacy of ‘intellectual’ cinema represented by Ray and Mrinal Sen, they made films far in-between having little bearing on the commercial market. Tollygunge, where the main studios are located, had been taken over by filmmakers who were mostly remaking Tamil or Hindi films. They worked within severe budget constraints and the financial and intellectual impoverishment was glaringly visible on screen.
