We wholeheartedly support the establishment and maintenance of a minors program at IWU. It's about time we had such a system. It will provide students with an opportunity to expand their education in a constructive manner without being tied down to a subject as a major. Maybe it will even eliminate some of the student-parent conflicts over choice of major. Parents traditionally ask what good a child's educa- tion is. Now, perhaps, a student will be able to tell mom and dad that they are majoring in a liberal art and minoring in something practical, like business. Not that this plan will eliminate the imbalance be- tween the traditional liberal arts and the "practical ma- jors." Currently, for instance 24 per cent of the students enrolled in the liberal arts college are business majors. That is close to 300 people. Anyway, at least the minors program is in place, and will be ready for use as early as next February. How it will affect the demographics of the university remains to be seen.
