ABOUT DAEGU UNIVERSITY Daegu University, Korea's first higher educational institute for special education, was founded in 1956 and included the fields of Special Education, Rehabilitation Science, and Social Welfare. Today, Daegu University is a comprehensive university with 13 colleges (95 majors), 7 graduate schools, and an enrollment of over 20,000 students.

At present, Daegu University is recognized not only as Korea's top university for Special Education, Rehabilitation Science, and Social Welfare, it is also tops in Information and Communication Technology, Industry-Academy Cooperation, and Continuing Education. In addition, it is becoming a dominant force in the fields of Design, Bio-industry, and the Automotive Parts Industry.

There are two campuses at Daegu University. Its main campus is and downtown campus is located in Daegu, Korea's third largest city. The locations ensure convenient access by plane, train, and subway. In addition, various cultural facilities and Daegu's city center are located nearby. Daegu University boasts a beautiful campus which is surrounded by Muncheonji Lake making it the ideal place to study Korean culture, language, and more.

In order to pursue the internationalization of education, Daegu University has signed agreements with over 90 institutes around the world and is now actively implementing various programs such as joint research, and faculty and student exchanges. As an example of these internationalization efforts, approximately 1,300 students are invited or dispatched to Daegu University annually. In addition, approximately 700 international students from 15 countries are enrolled at Daegu University. To support these international students, Daegu University provides scholarships of between 30 and 80 percent of tuition and provides reasonably-priced dormitory accommodations for 100 percent of its international students.

Chapter 2 ACCOMMODATION

▪ Dormitory Life Information / International House

1) Building and Room Entry - Entrance to the building is limited only to student residents. Non-residents are prohibited from entering the building. Except in exceptional circumstance, enter a building other than your own is prohibited. - Building hours are 05:00 ~ 24:00. Curfew is 24:00, thus entering or exiting the building after 24:00 is prohibited. All buildings are controlled by an automated entrance & exit control system, thus students must use their individual entrance security card when entering. ※ Entrance Security Card (Automated Entrance & Exit Control System)  Students need to use their individual entrance security card when entering the building. Entrance cards will only work for their own building.  Placing the entrance card approximately two to five centimeters over the card reader located near the door will open the door.  Entrance security cards are assigned to each student with a unique serial number. Transferring or lending cards is prohibited. Students will be punished with demerit points if found doing so.  Students must have their entrance card reissued from the administration office of Biho Dormitory immediately if lost. The replacement fee is 10,000 won, thus students must be careful not to lose their cards.  If an entrance card becomes unreadable or the door will not open, students must notify the International House Manager’s Office on the first floor or relevant dormitory assistant. The replacement fee does not apply to cards that have become unreadable.  Entrance security cards must be returned when vacating the dormitory. If students do not return their entrance card, they may not reapply to reside in the dormitory. 8

2) Notes related to theft and incidents of loss - Students are responsible for their own cash or personal valuables and even though they leave the room for a short time to a close place, they must lock the door. In particular, students should be careful while moving into and out of the dormitory residence since many theft incidents have happened when moving. - To prevent theft, security cameras have been installed at the 1st Floor entrance and exit doors and are set to record around the clock. - If students are found to be guilty of theft, the guilty party cannot reside in the dormitory during their time at Daegu University and their case will be transferred to the punishment committee. ※ Note: Life in the dormitory is regulated by a demerit point system. If students have more than 10 demerit points, they will be expelled from the dormitory. With more than 8 demerit points, students cannot apply for dormitory residence in the next semester.

If you want your computer to be connected, please ask the International House Manager’s Office on the first floor. In addition, Korea has excellent broadband penetration. You can find 24 hour Internet cafes everywhere. These places charge about 1,000 KRW per hour to use their computers.

Chapter 3 IMMIGRATION INFORMATION 1. VISA Students who have been admitted to the Korean Language Program can apply for either a General Short-term Visa (C-3) or a General Student Visa (D-4). Students who have been admitted to the Undergraduate or Graduate Programs should apply for a Student Visa (D-2). - General Short-term (C-3) Visa This visa is generally called a tourist visa. This visa is good for 90 days and the Status of Stay may be changed into General Student (D-4) Visa if the student wants to extend the period of study longer than 90 days. - General Student (D-4) Visa This visa is usually good for 6 months at a time and can be renewed within Korea. This visa takes approximately 1 month to process upon application at either a Korean Embassy or 10

Consulate office. The Certificate of Admission issued by Daegu University is required at the time of application. There may be additional documents or procedures required for your application depending on your nationality.

2. OTHER IMMIGRATION INFORMATION ▪ Foreigner Registration Foreigners intending to stay for more than 90 days in Korea must apply for foreign registration at the Immigration Office or Branch Office under relevant jurisdictions before the required due date. All the exchange students are required to do the foreigner registration and please submit the required document below to Ms. Eunkyung of the International Education Supporting Team [Required Documents] -Passport -1 Color Photo (3x4cm) -Fee: 30,000 KRW -Application (provided by the Office of International Affairs) -Certificate of Current Enrollment (provided by the Korean Language Education Center)

▪ Re-entry Permit Registered foreigners who want to depart and re-enter Korea within the permitted period of stay must apply for a re-entry permit at the local Immigration Office or the airport immigration offices on the departure date.

▪ Obtaining Permission to Engage in Activities beyond the Limits of Current Visa Status Foreigners seeking to carry out activities beyond the limits of their current visa status without changing their status of stay must receive permission to do so prior to actually engaging in said activity. [Application Eligibility] - Students who are currently enrolled at Daegu University with a Student Visa (D-2) and who have completed at least one semester of study. -Students who are currently enrolled at Daegu University’s Korean Language Program with a General Student Visa (D-4) and who have completed at least six months of study months and who have been recommended by the Director of Korean Language Program.

Chapter 4 CAMPUS LIFE GUIDE 1. GENERAL INFORMATION The Administration Building, commonly referred to as the Main Building, houses all the administrative branches of Daegu University as well as the office of the president. You can find the Office of International Affairs (OIA) administrative office on the 6th floor and classrooms from 4th to 7th floor. OIA is home to all classes for international students. In addition, Bakery and cafeteria is on the lobby floor. Daegu University museum is located on the 2nd to 3nd floor. The west gate is the closest stop to the International House and Student Dorms. There are also several restaurants, a convenience store, and a sports store all located near the west gate. The main gate is the terminus for all busses running to Daegu University. In addition, there are several shops, services, and restaurants near the main gate. You can find a student department store, a travel agent, a book store, an optician, a post office, a medical clinic, and several student club headquarters at the Student Union Bldg. 2.

▪ Entertainment There are numerous restaurant and bars around the University. There are also pool halls, video arcades, Internet lounges (PC rooms), video and DVD rental shops, a baseball batting cage, and a newly-opened smoke-free board game café. The nearest theater is at JOA Outlet (CINUS: http://www.cinus.co.kr/Front/Theater/CinusIntro.aspx?code=7121&area=260) in Gyeongsan City, about a 30 minute bus ride from Daegu University. You can find AT Ms runs from 7 am ~ 10 pm year round that are located at the 1st floor of the Student Union Building 1 (Map # 24), Dormitory Administrative Office Building (Map #12), main gate, Main Administrative Building (Map # 38), and the Institute of Computer & Communication (Map # 45). You can also find ATMs runs from 9:30 am ~ 4 pm on weekdays that are located at the 1st Floor of the Student Union Building 2 (Map # 25), College of Education Building 1 (Map # 23), College of Social Sciences (Map # 3), Gyeongbuk Techno-Park Specialized Center (Map # 52), College of Engineering (Map # 64), and Central Library (Map # 32).

Unfortunately, there is no ATM you can make cash in advance from your international credit card on and near the campus, but please consult with a bank teller on the Daegu University Branch of Daegu Bank.

3. STUDENT ACTIVITIES ▪ International Student Union The International Student Union is a self-governing organization established by international students who are enrolled in Daegu University. This organization is a representative organization which acts as a spokesperson for international students’ opinions. Especially, this organization provides great and active help for students who have difficulties and issues in overseas living and studying life in solving those difficulties and issues, thus it helps international students to have a more comfortable and enjoyable life in Korea.

▪ Buddy Program The Buddy Program is designed for international students and domestic students at Daegu University to have a closer relationship with each other. Korean Students will meet international students more than once a week. They will help international students with campus tours, shopping, movie going, etc. and become friends who can help international students to adapt to Korea’s life as quickly and as easily as possible.

▪ Daedong Festival Tent Village In May, all Korea’s universities have festivals. During this festival period, there will be various concerts and events hosted around campus. Specifically, during this period, each major will build a Tent Village where students can spend all night on campus enjoying food, drinks, music, and other exciting social and cultural activities. During this period, international students can also build their own Tent Village, so they can share their own traditional food.

▪ International Student’s Night In November, there is an International Student’s Night event which is a festival for international students. In this event, there will be several exciting contest such as Korean Speech contest, International Students Talent Contest and more. These contests allow international students to take pride in their Korean language ability and other talents.

▪ PUBLIC TRANSPORTATION Bus numbers 808, 814, 818, 508, and 708 go into Ha-yang. Occasionally 808 and 818 go the opposite direction towards Geum-ho. To make sure that the bus is going to Ha-yang, simply ask the driver, “Ha-yang ga yo (하양 가요)?”

There is an intercity express bus terminal as well as a Korean National Railroad Station in Ha- yang which are both useful for traveling to other and/or provinces.

The nearest subway stop is at An-shim. Busses 508, 708, 808, 814 and 818 go to An-shim. From An-shim it is about a 20 minute ride to Dong-Daegu train station and a 27 minute ride to downtown (get off at Joongangro station). Bus number 508 will take you downtown. This can take as little as 40 minutes to more than an hour depending on traffic. Bus number 840 goes to Gyeongsan City and will take you to Gyeongsan train station. No busses go directly to Daegu International Airport. The best way to get to the airport is to take either bus 808, 818, or 708 and get off the at the large HOME PLUS (홈플러스) shopping center. From there it is about a ten minute taxi ride to the airport.

* Subway There are two subway lines running in Daegu, one between Ansim and Daegok and the other one between Sawol and Munyang. The fare is KRW 1,100. (For Daegu-Gyeongbuk transportation card, KRW950)

▪ SHOPPING In addition to the student department store on campus, there are numerous convenience stores and small markets surrounding the University. Ha-yang has three larger supermarkets. The closest is “K-mart” just across the bridge as you go towards Ha-yang. “Nice Mart” is slightly larger and newer than “K-mart.” It is a large yellow building directly across the street from Ha- yang train station. “Dream Mart” is at the other end of Ha-yang from “Nice Mart” across the bridge as you head east. There is also a farmer’s market that is great for picking up fresh fruits and vegetables as well as many other locally produces good. The market is held on each day ending in a 4 or a 9. All the major department stores are in Daegu: E-Mart, Homeever, Tesco/Home Plus, Costco and many others.

Chapter 5 UNIVERSITY REGULATIONS 1. MEDICAL INSURANCE All the international students are required to purchase adequate medical insurance for the duration of their period of study. A number of insurance companies in Korea provide policies that meet the standards set by Daegu University. At present, the policy available through Daegu University costs 100,000 won per year.

2. DORMITORY REGULATION Students who receive more than 10 dormitory demerit points per semester from failing to comply with dormitory regulations designed to maintain International House's public order can be expelled from the dormitory.

4. KOREAN LANGUAGE COURSE REGULATION ▪ Class Attendance 1) One course is comprised of 10 weeks. 2) Students must attend all classes. Absences cannot exceed one fifth of the total course period (10 days). If exceeded, students cannot join the Korean Language Program anymore and should leave from Daegu University. 3) When students are absent for one tenth of the total course period (5 days), they will be notified and counseled. 4) Students will be marked late if they arrive more than 20 minutes after the start of class. - Three late arrivals will be counted as one missed class. - Three early departures (with notice) will be counted as one missed class. Each early departure without notice will be counted as one missed class. 5) Attendance checks from core units - four hours per day for ten weeks - will be counted towards attendance scores. 6) The minimum required attendance score is 15 points. No absence: 20 points / One absence: 19.5 points Two absences: 18.5 points / Three absences: 17.5 points Four absences: 16 points / Five absences: 15 points Six or more absences: Students cannot join the Korean Language Program anymore and should leave from Daegu University.

▪ Evaluation & Completion 1) Evaluation takes place twice each semester (10 weeks) in the form of midterm and final exams. Midterms take place in Week 5 and can be replaced by a short test. 2) Students caught cheating will receive a grade of zero. 3) Final evaluation is determined by midterm scores (30%), final exam scores (30%), attendance (20%), assignments & participation (10%), and quizzes (10%). 4) A final evaluation score below 70 points will prevent students from advancing to the next level. 5) Midterm Exam - Grammar (20%) + Conversation (10%) Final Exam - Grammar (20%) + Listening (10%)

(Conversation and listening activities may be replaced by different activities) - Students taking only one of the two required tests will receive 70% of the score from that test and have it added to their final evaluation score. - Written tests will consist of questions evenly selected from the four sections - Vocabulary, Grammar, Writing, and Reading. - Assignments will include various activities covered in the classroom such as homework, conversation, creative writing, etc.

Chapter 6 ABOUT DAEGU CITY ▪ Geography Daegu is located in the southeastern part of the Korean peninsula. Mountains surround the city forming a natural basin. Daegu is about 300km away from and about 120km away from . The Seoul-Busan Highway, the Seoul-Busan Railroad, and several other highways pass through the city, making it a transportation hub connecting the whole nation. In addition, cities such as , , and are located near Daegu and have a close relationship with the city.

Those who come to Daegu for the first time will quickly notice that it is a green city. The city government has gone to great lengths to improve Daegu's natural environment by planting more trees, building new parks and green spaces, and removing high standing walls, in order to create an open and attractive atmosphere within the city.

▪ Climate South Korea has four distinct seasons. Spring starts in late March and you can expect occasional light showers from March to May. Early June marks the beginning of summer and the monsoon season. Summer is relatively hot and humid, with temperatures in July and August rising over

30℃ (87℉). The coming of fall in late September brings continental winds and mild, dry weather, making it the most pleasant time of the year. From December to February, it is cold and dry with occasional snow. The average rainfall in Daegu is about 900 mm per year, slightly less than that of other areas in the nation. Chapter 7 How to get to Daegu University Daegu University has two campuses. The original campus is located in downtown Daegu and the main campus is in Gyeongsan. While there are still some facilities at the Daegu campus, most colleges and faculty moved to the Gyeongsan campus in 1981. The Office of International Affairs is located in Gyeongsan campus.
