ANOTHER VIEW Summitry and urgency

he annual Child Protection Summit, running this week in Orlando, presents an opportunity to jump- start improvements to Florida’s Department of Children and Families.T The agency, which oversees child-wel- fare interventions, is at one of its periodic low points. Its former chief, David Wilkins, resigned last month amid a sudden surge in child abuse and neglect deaths. The summit agenda -- perhaps set months before Wilkins’ unexpected departure -- doesn’t quite reflect the urgency of the situa- tion. Still, the event (expected to draw 2,500 participants) can spread best practices as DCF works to re-establish trust and accountability.
