Possible Host Center for Re-launched PWBA Tour Revealed

By Terry Bigham

The United States Bowling Congress and the Bowling Proprietors' Association of America held a conference call for media members last week to address their recent announcement of an initiative to "re-launch" the Pro- fessional Women's Bowling Association Tour, which dissolved in 2003 under financial strain. That story, released early in the evening on Friday, Oct. 10, stated that USBC and BPAA were entering a three-year commitment to fund nine PWBA Tour stops from midsummer through early fall of next year. Earlier this week, a possible host center for one of the PWBA Tour stops was revealed. The conference call included USBC President Andrew Cain, USBC Executive Director Chad Murphy, BPAA President Tom Martino, BPAA Executive Director Frank DeSocio, and pro bowler and member of the USBC Board of Directors, Kelly Kulick. Murphy expressed hope that the re-launch of the PWBA would "help build top-of-mind awareness of our sport with the non-bowling public." He further described his vision of the new PWBA as "a robust, exciting, professional tour that will support the growth of women's bowling into the future." Murphy, who previously oversaw youth programs for both USBC and BPAA as Managing Director of Youth Development for the International Bowling Campus, repeatedly emphasized the new PWBA as an initiative capable of giving younger women bowlers in particular a pinnacle to which they may aspire. "We are extremely excited about the possibilities this tour will bring us, especially in the area of woman bowl- ers, but also the youth that will be coming up through our system," Murphy said. Details revealed on the call disclosed that USBC/BPAA are committed to nine tour events tentatively sched- uled to be held between July 10 and Sept. 7, 2015, with a guaranteed prize fund of $60,000 per event and a guaranteed minimum first-place prize of $10,000 per event. Murphy added that each event will guarantee 24 cashing spots, with the 24th spot earning a guaranteed minimum of $1,200. He also added that the $60,000 prize fund per event potentially could grow depending on the number of entries each tour stop generates. Should that occur, Murphy said, "additional cash spots will be available at a one-in-three ratio." Murphy reiterated that USBC and BPAA would jointly be funding the PWBA for the next three years, with each organization contributing an equal amount of funds to the initiative, though he added that "no specific details as to the cost of that will be made available." in the first game before 2014 QUBICAAMF BOWLING WORLD CUP USA'S Barnes, Colombia’s dazzling the crowd with At Sky Bowling Center, Wroclaw, Poland a 300-219 win to se- Sunday's results Guerrero Win cure the win against World Cup Titles Ukraine's Mykhaylo MEN Championship Round Kalika. 8 www.bowlingworld.com - NOVEMBER 2014 Is The Corporate Approach Having A

Negative Effect On Bowling?

By Mary Lynly

With the increased effort to get bowling in the Olympics, which seems to have a more positive look these days, what do we have in common with our global coun- terparts? According to World Tenpin Bowling Federation President Kevin Dorn- berger: “USBC is one of our 108 members and while they are an active one they do not have the influence they could have, largely do to their recent lack of inter- est in the sport (although that does seem to be changing some). In most federa- tions the communication occurs between the federation and competitive/ tournament members.” When asked about the similarity of our local and state association system Dorn- berger said: “Very few have the equivalent of local associations, of course none are as large as USBC. There are some in Europe that have club structure, I guess similar to leagues but more about competition and meeting social needs. Some federations have regional groups. In general I think the national federation has more control over them than USBC. The smaller federations are autonomous.” More and more professional bowlers are making the trek overseas to pro tourna- ments that have more lucrative prize funds and, more and more bowlers from other countries are taking part in U.S. PBA events. www.bowlingworld.com Travel is expensive and it’s not like two or three Pros and even families can get into a motor home and drive around the U.S.A. Are we able to fit into the global mold? How many moms like Candy Cook (Steve Cook’s wife) will travel and Read it online! home school their kids on the way to help their husbands/wives fulfill their dream. Quite a scenario it will be interesting to see how it all plays out.

One person's view about bowling in the U.S.: “It's sad to see what is going on with bowling. Our local board has vacancies and we try to bring new people on but no one wants to be that committed so then we operate at half capacity. With our parent organization taking awards away, it will been interesting seeing what we will do to be able to provide awards. We couldn't go with the usual award source as their minimum order was way more than we needed, so we went with our State award source but the cost to our association will be a consideration. I would imagine all other associations are currently going thru the same thing. And, most importantly, our association did not raise our local fees this season and kept USBC cards the same price. This will be killer for sure. Is USBC reaching out to aid us? No. Makes me wonder if our state is reaching out to local associations since they have volume purchase on their side? I don't think so. Thankfully, I have been able to communicate with another association in CA to send me an awards program we could use for a sample. Not all the other associa- tions will seek out like I did. And what if associations do nothing? Bowlers are going to get discouraged and not want to sanction leagues and away goes leagues as we knew them. And then there is the rating USBC is doing on local associations. First, if you serve on your board you had to go online and take their test. Most of our board members did but not all so that hurt our rating. Next, depending on the size of your association, you have to put on clinics for new bowlers. We are at 2,000-plus so are required to put on 3. Then, we need to report the number of entrants in our various City tournaments and if we don't get enough to participate, that hurts our rating too. It's crazy. Is this how USBC is involved anymore? Where's the help?” From a state association leader across the U.S.: “We also have this terrible feeling about USBC. We can't see where it is going and they are no help to local and state associations. Oh well, we were in bowling when it was the best.” How are things going for your association? Good news? Let’s hear it. lynly- [email protected] Any news is welcome.

NOVEMBER 2014 - www.bowlingworld.com 11 ASK BOB By: Bob Korth

Q. I have been bowling now for over 20 years. I have always had good ball speed but recently I have noticed a considerable slow down. Because my turn on the ball is still good the ball is hooking out of my hand. Is there any- thing I can do to get the speed back?

A. I have been bowling now for 61 years. I started when I was 11 years old. So I know about speed changes. I also used to throw the ball hard. When I reached 60 or so ball speed went way down. Over the years between 60 and 70 I learned to makeup for lost speed with ball weight and cover changes. Most of my equipment went to high pin placements and polished covers to get the ball through the heads. After a trip to Kegel's training cen- ter I realized that a big part of the problem is in the approach. When we get older we tend to focus on being smooth on the approach. We have more even steps from start to finish. I watched video of some of the top stars and they all have one thing in common they start with slow steps and finish with fast steps. A good person to watch is Chris Barnes his last 3 steps are almost twice as fast as his first steps. This gives him momentum and that translates to faster ball speed. So in my case I backed up on the approach went to 6 steps I try to take the first 3 slow and pick up speed the last 3. Doing this has helped me to pick up about 1 and ½ miles per hour ball speed. I have to consciously think about it at first but after a few frames of practice it becomes more natural.

Q. I have been bowling for quite a few years now. I average in the low 210's but this season I have been slumping into the high 190's to low 200's. The shot we are on does not seem that much different. I have been practicing but it has not helped. What can I do to get my game back?

A. Bowlers seem to have an aversion to taking lessons. If you golf and are having problems with your swing the first thing you do is see the pro and get help. Bowlers for some reason think they can do it on their own. The other solution they have is to buy a new bowling ball. Now don't get me wrong a new ball many times can help your game and here's why. You get a new ball and you get caught up in watching the reac- tion of that new ball. You forget about the things that you have been work- ing to correct. Many times then they correct themselves. However a faster way is to find a professional instructor in your area and take a few lessons. You can't see or feel what is wrong. A good instructor will see it right away Marty Deh 300/793 At 4th Street Bowl and then you can practice fixing these mistakes. After a little practice you and the new ball will be the bowling beast you want to be.

Accomplishment: Drilled a new CRUX just before league. Wasn't sure about using Q. The rest is in as a gunners mate in the last world war, under "Bull" Halsey on the USS Hornet (CV God's hands. Who knows, Bill may make it to 100. -12). Mr. Vaccaro is one of our local bowling heroes, i.e. a war hero who happens to be a bowler. He saw action in the pacific theatre from 1943-46 and can tell you all about the Battle of Midway and the typhoon of '44 with it's one hundred foot waves. 100 foot waves! If you want to hear what it was like to not see land for nine months, speak to Bill. If you want to know what it is like to eat only beans everyday for every meal for a month, speak to Bill. If you want to know how beans with maggots taste, speak to Bill. If you want to know what shooting down kamikaze airplanes was like, speak to Bill. If you want to know what a hero has to say about war, speak to Bill. If you want to know how it feels to be 90 years old, speak to Bill. By the way, most Navy veterans are pretty good bowlers. At least Seaman Bill Vaccaro turned into a darn good one. He bowled for the first time in 1939 and has rolled many high scores. His highs are 298 and 698. He always averaged at least 180 during the last seven decades before retiring from the lanes in 2011. I forgot to ask, but wonder if he ever used a wooden bowling ball in 1939? Vaccaro is familiar with many of the better Citrus Belt bowlers from the early days of the Association. His favorite is GARY MADISON. He can tell you many stories about his old teammate including a tale where he claims Gary still owes him! Some of his other favorite old timers include JIM COATES, CORKY DeMAIO, NORRIS TURNER and JIMMY WALKER. Who was the best he has watched bowl? He won't say. He will tell you that the new bowling balls make things too easy. He will tell you that in the old days a big hook crossed five boards and there were no arrows to help you guide the ball to the pocket. The old lanes did have some advantages.
