Flemish Cinema and Film Culture through South African Eyes By Martin P. Botha Fall 2007 Issue of KINEMA THE HERITAGE OF FILM: PERSPECTIVE ON FLEMISH CINEMA AND FILM CUL- TURE THROUGH SOUTH AFRICAN EYES I assisted the Locarno Film festival in 2005 with a retrospective of short films by young South African directors. There I met a very talented, young Flemish director, whose film was by far the best in the one section.(1) It moved me immensely with its honest portrait of alienation and racial discrimination. We had a long discussion on film history, aesthetics and film cultures. We also talked about the historyof film in Belgium and it was noted that while the French speaking side of Belgian cinema had recently received international acclaim (for example, the work by the Dardenne Brothers), Flemish cinema was struggling. In fact, the young filmmaker made the statement that there was little to be excited about in the historyof Flemish cinema. He felt especially that the films about rural communities and most of the historical dramas were not saying much about contemporary Flanders, in particular, the youth. I have heard this argument before, but in a totally different cultural context. Many young, aspiring South African filmmakers have told me there is very little in South African film history which makes themproud of their film culture. For decades South African film culture has been in isolation. The years 1959to1980 were characterised by an artistic revival in filmmaking throughout the world, ranging from exciting political films in Africa and Latin America to examples of great art cinema in Europe and Asia. -

Isabel Palomo Merino Directed by: Dr. Javier Ortiz García, Universidad Autónoma de Madrid Madrid, 2017 Detective fiction has become one of the most popular genres in our present times; but why and how did detective fiction become so popular in Spain? This dissertation studies the development of the genre of detective fiction in Spain, written both by Spanish writers and as translations from American authors, framed within the historical period that extends from the Franco Regime up to our present days. It was during the dictatorship that translations of foreign detective fiction started to reach the country and a sense of collective imagination on the topic began to be created, influenced also by the movie adaptations that reached Spain, by the numerous pseudotranslations, and by journals like El Caso. The foreign model of detective fiction was adopted by national writers who re- created it within a new context: classic detective fiction influenced the work of Francisco García Pavón, and hardboiled detective fiction –analyzed through the works of James M. -

The first was the news that, after 22 years as délégué général, Gilles Jacob stepped up to become Président while handing down the reins to Thierry Frémaux, the latter now divides his time between Cannes and duties as head of the Institute Lumière in Lyons. The other was the presence on the Croisette of seven previous Palme d’Or directors: Francis Ford Coppola (The Conversation, 1974, and Apocalypse Now, 1979), Ermanno Olmi (The Tree of Wooden Clogs, 1978), Shohei Imamura (The Ballad of Narayama, 1983, and The Eel, 1997), David Lynch (Wild at Heart, 1990), Joel and Ethan Coen (Barton Fink, 1991), and Abbas Kiarostami (The Taste of Cherries, 1997). One might add, too, that over the past quarter century each of their eight award-winning films helped considerably to set the tone and style of the world’s mostrevered film festival. Apocalypse Now Redux In the case of Apocalypse Now -- aka Apocalypse Now Redux, to denote a new version of an old film -- Francis Ford Coppola returned to Cannes with the completed version of his work-in-progress presented here 22 years ago. No less than 53 minutes were added to the re-edited 203-minute version, in addition to a re-mastered Technicolor transfer and a re-mastered soundtrack. -
