  • Loyola University Maryland Introduces Paquette As Its Next Athletic Director
Loyola University Maryland introduces Paquette as its next athletic director Jim Paquette needed little time to mention the priorities he will espouse at Loyola University Maryland, where he will become assistant vice president and director of athletics April 1. Paquette was introduced by Jesuit Father Brian F. Linnane, Loyola president, at a Feb. 17 news conference at the new Ridley Athletic Complex in Baltimore. Paquette will succeed Joe Boylan, the Greyhounds’ athletic director since 1991. Since 2002, Paquette has been the associate athletic director for development at Boston College, a fellow Jesuit institution. His roots in Catholic education go back further, to his undergraduate days at Providence College, where he met his wife, Erin. “Catholic education is very important to my wife and I,” Paquette said in his opening remarks. “Our sons attend Catholic schools in Boston, and they will attend Catholic schools here in Baltimore.” James, 8, and Ryan, 6, were among what their father called “Team Paquette,” family attending the news conference at the Ridley Complex, a 6,000-seat stadium that will celebrate its grand opening March 13, with a 3 p.m. men’s lacrosse game against Duke. Before introducing Paquette, Father Linnane thanked Boylan for the leadership that allowed Loyola to build that facility – west of the main campus and quite visible from Interstate 83 in the Jones Falls Valley – and the Greyhounds’ success in the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference. Noting that Loyola won 56 MAAC championships the last two decades, Paquette plans to build on that foundation. In order, Paquette said that on his watch Loyola athletics will be true to the Jesuit educational model, and care for the whole person; comply with NCAA rules and regulations, not just the letter of the law but the spirit; uphold financial integrity, “being careful stewards of our precious resources”; and pursue excellence in all sports sponsored by the Greyhounds.

  • S Jesuit Father Linnane – 2014 Hibernian of the Year
Conversation with Loyola’s Jesuit Father Linnane – 2014 Hibernian of the Year By Paul McMullen [email protected] Twitter@ReviewMcMullen What charism, Jesuit Father Brian F. Linnane was asked, do the Irish bring to the Catholic Church? The president of Loyola University Maryland in Baltimore mentioned tenacity in defending their right to worship, and that “deep sense of giving back” that manifests itself in vocations disproportionate to the population. To make that point, he used another contribution from Ireland: humor. “My mother’s parents are from Sligo, my father’s mother was from Waterford and my father’s father was from Clare,” Father Linnane said. “They all came (to the U.S.) before the first World War. … I am the oldest son of Joseph and Mary. I had no chance.” His calling, heritage and the enduring impact of Loyola make Father Linnane the 2014 Hibernian of the Year, an honor he is to receive in Hunt Valley March 13, the Thursday before St. Patrick’s Day, at the 211th anniversary dinner of the Hibernian Society of Baltimore, which has financially supported local students since 1803. Donal Doyle, president of the society, noted the deep ties of its members to Loyola over the generations, and Father Linnane’s leadership of the university, “ensuring it will continue to be an excellent education provider to young men and women.” Shortly after becoming president of Loyola in 2005, Father Linnane called for a “Year of the City,” to address issues that affect Baltimore City. Its residue includes the York Road Initiative, which uses the resources of several graduate programs to improve the lot of youths, civic organizations and businesses on the corridor just east of Loyola.

Founded in 1852, Loyola Maryland is one of 27 Jesuit institutions of higher education in the United States and the first to bear the name of St. Ignatius of Loyola. Today, the Loyola Maryland community encompasses the diverse backgrounds and perspectives of some 5,282 undergraduate and graduate students, over 506 full-time and part-time faculty, 682 staff and administrators, and nearly 64,000 alumni. At Loyola Maryland, deep bonds and close and life-long connections are forged through the Jesuit charism and educational experience, intellectual interests and beliefs are explored freely, and community members are united in pursuit of a purpose-driven life as "men and women for and with others." The next President will position the University for the future, recognizing and embracing its identities and further defining Loyola Maryland’s place in the greater higher education landscape.
