MARTINSBURG — Two former Martinsburg Bulldogs have reunited on the basketballcourt at the United States Naval Academy.

Freshman Morganne Andrews joined the Navy women’s basketball team last season while former teammate Ciera Hertelendy is playing her junior year.

Andrews played four seasons at Martinsburg and Hertelendy played two.

As long as college had been on Andrews mind, she knew she wanted to attend the Naval Academy. She was accepted early and didn’t look any- where else.

“Navy has been a goal for me for a while,” Andrews said. “The fact I get to play basketball here is just the icing on the cake.”

Herelendy wanted to continue her basketball career after high school, especially at the Division I level.

“I think that’s every young athletes dream,” Hertelendy said. “It also stemmed more than basketball: the opportunity the Navy Academy provided for a great education and a guarantee job upon graduation.”

Before Andrews headed to Navy, she reached out to Hertelendy.

“She was a huge piece of information for me,” Andrews said. “I asked her all the questions I had, and she was super helpful. She was very honest with me. It really helped me solidify this decision.”

Andrews met the team before the season started, which was beneficial for her. She said everyone was welcoming and represented the program well. However, the overall transition from high school to college has been hard.

“It’s an adjustment as far as the scheduling and pace goes,” Andrews said. “Just needing to be more mentally in the game than in high school.”

This season, the 6-foot Hertelendy has started in six of the team’s eight games, averaging 26 minutes a game. During her time on the team, she has learned to work on new things and find new roles.

“This year, I’ve focused more on my defensive effort on the court,” Hertelendy said. “I’ve also been adjusting and learning to find where I fit in with my role and how I can contribute best to the team.”

Andrews, a 6-1 forward, has started three games this season, playing a total of 133 minutes.

“Coming into the season, I just wanted to play,” Andrews said. “Being a freshman at a D1 level and getting any sort of playing time is a goal. A pro- gram winning, I think is more important than playing time, so if I’m playing a little bit and the team is winning, there is nothing more I could ask for.”

Having a better mindset about the game was something Andrews learned more about when she joined the Navy basketball team.

“Basketball IQ is something I think I struggled with in my four years of high school,” Andrews said. “When I got to Navy, it all started to click and come together and that has really helped me play and understand the game better than I ever have.”

Hertelendy is averaging 3.5 points per game and Andrews 2.0. Hertelendy is the team’s third-leading rebounder and tops the Midshipmen in blocked shots.

Hertelendy has another year to decide her career after graduating but has a few ideas in mind.

“I’m still undecided and have thrown out a bunch of different options,” Hertelendy said. “I’m thinking of going into Navy aviation as a pilot or flight officer or Navy surface warfare.”

Andrews wants to study astrophysics.

The Navy women’s basketball team is 2-6 this season, with four games in the Patriot League being postponed due to COVID-19.

“Its been very unpredictable,” Hertelendy said. “We talk all the time about controlling what we can control and COVID is one of the things that we unfortunately can’t control. We still come everyday ready to work.” Patriot League Announces Plan for 2021 Men’s & Women’s Basketball Seasons Patriot League | November 9, 2020

BETHLEHEM, Pa. – The Patriot League Council of Presidents endorsed a plan for a League-only men’s and women’s basketball schedule for the 2020-21 season, beginning on Saturday, Jan. 2. League play will be contingent on the League and its member institutions being able to conduct competition in ways that protect the health and safety of student-athletes, coaches, staffs and their communities.

Consistent with the prioritization of health and safety, the 2020-21 schedule format features a significant reduction in travel and overnight stays. No teams will be permitted to fly to games. Instead of the League’s traditional double round-robin format, teams will play an increased number of games against League opponents in closer geographic proximity.

The 10 Patriot League institutions will be divided into three regional mini-conferences with teams playing four games against each regional opponent. Additional League games will be played outside of the mini-conferences to complete the 16-game regular-season schedule. Navy’s mini-conference opponents are American and Loyola. To reduce travel and overnight stays, schools will play against the same opponent on consecutive days, primarily Saturdays and Sundays, with a limited number of exceptions.

League institutions, other than the United States Military Academy and the United States Naval Academy, will be precluded from participating in non-League contests this season. Because Army and Navy are unique in their environments and their missions within higher education, their pursuit of non-League competition, as considered appropriate by their respective Superintendents, is permitted.

The Patriot League Men’s and Women’s Basketball Championships will include eight teams. The men’s quarterfinal round is scheduled for Saturday, March 6, while the women begin quarterfinal-round play on Sunday, March 7. The men’s semifinal round will be played on Wednes- day, March 10, followed by the women’s semifinals on Thursday, March 11. The Patriot League men’s and women’s basketball championship games are both scheduled to be played on Sunday, March 14.

A school must complete a minimum of 12 regular-season League games to be eligible to compete in the 2021 Patriot League Tournament. Non-League games do not factor into the seeding or tournament qualifying process. Ties within each mini-conference will be broken before any ties in the overall tournament seeding. Seeding is based on mini-conference finish and regular-season League winning percentage. In the case of ties, ties will be broken from top to bottom. The mini-conference winners are based upon their mini-conference record. Each of the three mini-conference winners earns a spot into the tournament field and host a quarterfinal game. Those teams are seeded (one through three) by their overall League record winning percentage. Each of the second-place mini-conference finishers earns a spot in the tournament field. The runner- up team with the best overall record would earn the #4 seed and the right to host a quarterfinal game. Those teams are seeded (four through six) by their overall League record winning percentage.

Patriot League Announces Men’s and Women’s Basketball Schedule Adjustments Patriot League | February 9, 2021

BETHLEHEM, Pa. - The Patriot League has announced a complete slate of men’s and women’s basketball schedule adjustments for the final three weeks of the 2020-21 regular season. League play continues to be contingent on the League and its member institutions being able to conduct competition in ways that protect the health and safety of student-athletes, coaches, staffs and their communities.

The revised men’s and women’s basketball schedules focus on playing postponed games within the Patriot League’s three regional divisions for seeding League tournaments.

The 2021 Patriot League Men’s and Women’s Basketball Championships will feature a reduced eight-team field. Two teams from each division will receive an automatic berth to the League championship based on their divisional record. The two final teams will qualify for the tournament based on their overall League record. Non-League games are not considered for tournament qualifications purposes.
