H A P P Y V A L E N T I N E ' S D A Y ! 4 HEALTHY HEARTS ARE DIABETES NEWS HAPPY HEARTS According to a Harvard-led study published in the American Heart Association's journal Circulation, keeping type 1 diabetes under tight control through medication and monitoring may help prevent an immune reaction that attacks the heart. Dr. Myra Lipes, the study's senior author and an investigator at Harvard Medical School's Joslin Diabetes Center in Boston, and other researchers looked at data from a broad clinical trial involving type 1 diabetes patients who were randomly split into two groups. People in one group tightly controlled their blood sugar levels with intensive insulin treatment and frequent glucose monitoring, while those in the other were looser with their regulation and had higher blood sugars. At the start of the experiment, participants were free of heart disease and had regular blood pressure and cholesterol levels. The researchers found that people exposed to higher blood sugar levels were more likely to develop an autoimmune response to the heart proteins that was linked to later development of heart disease, including calcium buildup in heart arteries, heart attack, bypass surgery and death. She and a very small group of very thin people like her have given scientists surprising clues to one of the most important questions about obesity: Why do fat people often develop serious and sometimes life-threatening medical conditions? The answer, it turns out, has little to do with the fat itself. It’s about each person’s ability to store it. A few months ago, a young woman walked into Wendy Chung's office with a notebook and a flash drive. She said, "Here's my medical history, here's my genome, now you figure out what caused all this." This is exactly the kind of challenge that Chung relishes. A skilled genetic detective, she is adept at tracing an individual's symptoms to a particular genetic anomaly, teasing out its molecular ramifications and identifying the associated syndrome. According to those who know her well, that analytical bent is accompanied by a rare sensitivity. "I've known a lot of brilliant doctors and though she's at the top of the brilliance list, she also has a humanistic philosophy that animates everything she does," says Hamilton Cain, the father of one of Chung's patients. "She's not only thinking on all cylinders, but also feeling on all cylinders. She really connects with patients and their stories and their lives."     2015 CLINICAL ANNUAL REPORT innovation & patient-centered care ANNUAL REPORT 2015 hen I assumed the position of Chair of the Medical Staff in 2014, it was with the knowledge that I would have the honor of working with an exemplary medical staff with a history of W successes and accomplishments. As 2015 draws to a close and I look back on what was achieved during the year, it is clear that this tradition of excellence has continued. If I may, I would like to highlight a few of these accomplishments: • HCAHPS Physician Communication scores that are consistently at the CMS target or higher. • Planned implementation of a pilot program to address the growing healthcare needs of the geriatric population by the early identification and management of patients with cognitive impairment and delirium. • Selection of Michael Bernstein, MD as the 2015 recipient of the Dr. Melville G. Magida Award. • Recognition of four physicians for their commitment to their patients and the Stamford Community as “Physician of the Quarter” — Kevin Dwyer, MD, Jennifer Henkind, MD, Sarah Kahn, MD, and Kirsten Hohmann, MD. • Successful accreditation surveys by the Department of Health, Joint Commission Triennial Accreditation, and Recertification of programs in Stroke, Joint Replacement and Spinal Fusion, in large measure to the quality of medical staff and the care provided to patients. Re-accreditation of Breast Center and Heart Failure Program. • Successful implementation of ICD-10 that could not have been achieved without the full cooperation and leadership of the medical staff. • Expansion of SHIP. • Medical staff that is extremely loyal to Stamford Hospital as evidenced by the results of the Physician Engagement Survey that showed that almost two-thirds of the medical staff are either employed, closely affiliated or closely aligned with the Hospital.
