    A memo from the office of liturgy Special series on preparing for Lent – part 2 of 3 Are there extra rules we have to follow during Lent, and if so, what are they? In my memo to you last week I talked about how giving things up for Lent is less about giving yourself more rules to follow and more about training your will to be more like Christ’s will. You can read it on the parish website if you didn’t get a chance to see it last weekend. But while we make this extra effort to make ourselves more Christ-like on our own, there are also extra regulations given to us by the church for Lent that give us a chance to try to be more Christ-like together. You can look on the diocese’s website (www.crookston.org) in the policy manual to see exactly what the Lenten regulations are (page 64), but the language there is technical, so I’ll translate some of the highlights for you here. Fast Fasting is the first of two things we do together during Lent. But what is fasting? In this internet age, everyone seems to have an opinion on everything including what words mean, and the church has not been spared. If you look online at tips for fasting, you’ll find any number of suggestions that you should be fasting from media or long hours at work or buying new things. And these may be excellent suggestions for you. But they aren’t what the church specifically has in mind when we are called to partake in days of fasting.

  • Advent Fasting
    Pastor’s Notes The Basilica of Sts. Peter and Paul / December 8, 2019 Advent Fasting As I’ve mentioned in years past, Advent is a penitential season that entails prayer, fasting, and penance – similar to Lent, though obviously much shorter and less arduous. Fasting and penance are things that set Catholic Christians apart from many of our Protestant brothers and sisters, as well as those who do not profess any faith. It is extremely counter-cultural to go against one’s own comfort in a world that is dominated by the utilitarian philosophies that want to maximize pleasure and minimize suffering. So it does us well as Catholic Christians to be informed and knowledgeable about the reasons underlying these practices. First, we seek to subordinate the passions that arise from the flesh to the higher purpose of the spiritual. We do not fast and do penance because we hate ourselves, any more than an athlete watches his diet and forgoes bodily pleasures. The athlete does it in order to be competitive. The same can be said for the Catholic Christian, who has an eternal motive for these practices. The Ember Days In previous pastor’s notes I explained the traditional Ember Days fast. This year’s Advent Ember Days are: December 18, 20, and 21. The U. S. Bishops’ Conference issued a Pastoral Statement on Penance and Abstinence in 1966, and this is what they have to say about the Ember Days: 17. Vigils and Ember Days, as most now know, no longer oblige to fast and abstinence. However, the liturgical renewal and the deeper appreciation of the joy of the holy days of the Christian year will, we hope, result in a renewed appreciation as to why our forefathers spoke of "a fast before a feast." We impose no fast before any feast-day, but we suggest that the devout will find greater Christian joy in the feasts of the liturgical calendar if they freely bind themselves, for their own motives and in their own spirit of piety, to prepare for each Church festival by a day of particular self- denial, penitential prayer and fasting.

While not a Holy Day of Obligation, Ash Wednesday is a day when we will all wish to assist in the offering of the Mass, and of course to receive the ashes. Kindly return your palms from last year's Palm Sunday by Quinquagesima so that they can burned to make the ashes. Stations of the Cross St Michael's will again join with Holy Cross for the Friday night Stations of the Cross and Benediction of the Blessed Sacrament. The services are at St Madeleine Sophie (6440 Greene Street; parking off Clivedon Street), at 7 p.m., beginning February 20th. Fr Grogan and I will share the preaching and officiating. As last year,we will also alternate between “our” rite of Stations, and the one Holy Cross uses. The Newman Community has historically had their Lenten devotions on Wednesdays rather than Fridays, and will continue the custom this year. Stations and Benediction will be at 7 at Our Lady of the Assumption, on February 25th, and March 4th, 11th and 18th. (Since March 25th is the Annunciation, there will be no Stations that night.) A Lenten supper precedes Stations at 6 in the Sacred Heart Chapel downstairs.
