Pastor’s Letter

Dear Parishioners,

Our country has been through many times of trial: revolution, civil war, slavery, economic depression, and protests. We may now add “health threats.” The coronavirus has crippled our entire society and other parts of the world in ways we could never have imagined. Each one of us longs for the good news that a vaccine will be found and that the threat will soon be over. But we have yet to reach that point in the history of this crisis.

Whether all of this is an overreaction or not, we are all forced to live in the moment and deal with the situation as best as we can. Statistics show that the regular flu has killed many more people than the coronavirus. That being said, people are afraid, understandably so, as the coronavirus seems to be very contagious. Now is the time for the triumph of common sense and exercising wisdom, which dictate that we prudent with contact with each other, diligent hygiene, and above all, patience.

There are some parts of our world where churches are being forced to shut down temporarily. As of the printing of this bulletin, no word has come to me from the Diocese of Rockville Centre. Thus, we will proceed with our liturgies as scheduled until such declarations are made. Regular Masses will always be offered each day, whether parishioners can attend or not, as every Mass is offered for loved ones, with their names mentioned in the intercessions.

As many wise people have been saying, panic and hysteria help no one. God gave us all brains so that we can make good decisions which will keep us all healthy, no matter what the situation is in our world. Let’s all be smart and remain calm, keeping as normal a schedule as possible.

Lent is a time of reflection, prayer, and spiritual growth. If we are forced to stay home, we can use the time we have to accomplish these personal goals and even pray together as a family. How many of us complain that we never have enough time to pray! If this crisis affords us more time at home with family, why not use this to our advantage as Catholics and finally get to read the Bible, the Catechism, or go online to watch or listen to a selection from FORMED.

Prayer is what is needed now: -To pray for our world and all those affected by the coronavirus. -To pray for scientists in laboratories who are trying to find a vaccine. -To pray for doctors and nurses caring for victims of the virus. -To pray for those who have been adversely affected economically. -To pray for common sense, peace in people’s hearts, and the resolve to persevere. -To pray for those who have no faith and don’t know what to do.

-Father Zientarski
