Current Situation: The Pierce County Airport and Ferry division is in the process of upgrading gate access, fencing, and security lighting at both airports. In 2015 the division will implement an Airport Watch program to increase the safety and security at each facility. The improvements are being made due to incidents which have occurred at the airports over the last several years and at the request of airport tenants. Currently both airports are fenced with restricted access gates to enhance security, although there are gaps in the fencing allowing unauthorized pedestrian entry. These gaps will be addressed in early 2015. An electronic gate is being added to the north gate at Tacoma Narrows Airport (TIW) and the south gate is being outfitted with a mechanism to allow its use by those who are hearing impaired. Once that improvement is completed, 24 hour security will be implemented at TIW. Thun Field currently operates with 24 hour gate security. Prior to implementation, the airport commissions at each airport discussed airport security measures during the preceding year and staff coordinated the implementation of the security measures with airport tenants.

    Methow Valley State Airport Airport Layout Plan Report CHAPTER TWO INVENTORY OF EXISTING CONDITIONS AND FORECASTS OF AVIATION ACTIVITY Introduction Methow Valley State Airport is owned and operated by the Washington Department of Transportation (WSDOT) Aviation Division. The airport is also home to the U.S. Forest Service (USFS) North Cascades Smoke Jumper Base, which is located on USFS-owned property immediately adjacent to the east side of the runway. Methow Valley State Airport accommodates both general aviation aircraft used in business, personal or government travel, and aircraft used in seasonal firefighting efforts. The majority of general aviation activity consists of small single-engine and multi-engine piston aircraft, although the airport also accommodates a variety of turbine aircraft (turboprop, business jets, etc.) on a limited basis. General aviation activity is generated by local residents, businesses, and visitors to the area. The Methow Valley is one of Washington’s most unique year-round destinations and has long attracted visitors and part-time residents for its wilderness setting and unique recreational opportunities, including the nearby Sun Mountain Lodge. Fire-related activity includes some piston engine aircraft, but twin-engine turboprops and helicopters account for the majority of aircraft operations. This chapter documents existing conditions at the airport. Existing airfield facilities were examined during on-site inspections to update facility inventory data collected in prior planning efforts. Jon Bonk – NWS IMET Today/Tonight: Marine layer is 4,000-5,000 feet thick west of the Cascade crest this morning with stratus clouds banking up against, and a short distance across, the crest. Onshore flow will keep fire weather impacts low across the west side with light drizzle and spotty rain is possible for the Olympics and north Cascade west slopes. Meanwhile, breezy winds and fairly low humidity will keep elevated concerns across much of the east side today. The cooler and denser air spilling across the crest is producing another morning of breezy winds through most of the east slope valleys and central/eastern Gorge. Gusts 25-30 mph are common in those areas with gusts around 40 mph in the Kittitas Valley. Gorge winds will remain quite breezy today in and near the Gorge. The east slope valleys will see winds ease up for a few hours later this morning before peaking again this afternoon and evening at 25-35 mph, strongest in the Kittitas Valley. Away from those wind favored areas, expect south to southwest winds with gusts 10-20 mph. The higher terrain may see gusts of 20-25 mph. Today will be the coolest day of the past 7 and next 7 days for the east side with temperatures running close to normal.
