View metadata, citation and similar papers at core.ac.uk brought to you by CORE provided by The University of Sydney: Sydney eScholarship Journals online Mapping Joseph Furphy’s Riverina—Yooringa ALAN JOHN THOMPSON Independent Researcher A little learning is a dang’rous thing; Drink deep, or taste not the Pierian spring. ALEXANDER POPE, An Essay on Criticism In this essay, I chronicle my attempt to produce an accurate topographical map of the setting for Chapter III of Joseph Furphy’s Such Is Life and the route that the novel’s narrator and main protagonist Tom Collins follows through that landscape. I also set out my attempts to map the ‘exact locality’ of this setting within the real world of the Riverina, beyond Tom’s evasive admission that ‘it was somewhere between Echuca and Albury’ (SIL 82/102).1 Of course, it is not entirely necessary to fully answer these questions to be able to broadly follow the events that take place in Chapter III. Nevertheless, while the intricacies of the landscape are not immediately obvious from a cursory reading, it is evident from Furphy’s judicious and precise placement of numerous topographical and geolocational markers or clues within the text (notwithstanding Tom’s often seemingly fumbling attempts to conceal them), that he (Furphy) probably intended the ‘observant reader’ (SIL 2/2) to use these clues as signposts in order to form a detailed picture of location and landscape; or, perhaps, more in line with the wider themes of Such Is Life, he meant to lure him or her into such an attempt.

Department of Primary Industries Dry Seasonal Conditions in Rural Victoria Report: 63 February 8, 2007 DPI staff supporting the community at a Mallee Drought Information Expo. (February 2007). Source: L. Jacka Environmental Indicators Weather Rainfall December 2006 had below average rainfall across the state with parts of the south west and east of the state receiving well below average rainfall. A significant area of the north east had the driest December on record (Figure 1). 2006 was a very dry year in south east Australia, with a number of places receiving record low annual totals and a number of other places receiving less than half their usual rainfall. The year will be remembered for being the 10 th consecutive year with below normal rainfall. It was the third driest year on record for Victoria. This is in marked contrast to the north and west of Australia where rainfall was well above average. In January 2007 the west of the state received above average totals while the east of the state was below average (Figure 2). Most of the rain fell between the 19 th and the 22 nd . The highest rainfall total recorded for the month was Casterton Showgrounds with 172 mm. DSC Report 1 Figure 1. • Parish and Township Plan Numbers
Parish and Township plan numbers This is a complete list of Victorian parishes and townships, together with plan numbers assigned by the Victorian Department of Crown Lands and Survey at some point between 1950 and 1970. The list has been reproduced from the Vicmap Reference Tables on the Department of Sustainability and Environment's land information website. Browse the list or use a keyword search to identify the plan number/s for a location. The plans are listed alphabetically. Townships and parishes are inter-sorted on the list. Some entries refer to locations within parishes or townships; these entries may be duplicated. The plan number can be used to locate copies of plans that PROV holds in the series VPRS 16171 Regional Land Office Plans Digitised Reference Set. For example, using the Search within a Series page on the PROV online catalogue with series number '16171' and the text '5030' will return the specific plans relating to the township of Ballarat. In this case, searching for 'Ballaarat' by name will return al the plans in the Ballarat land district, covering much of central and western Victoria. PROV does not hold copies of plans for the locations highlighted in pale yellow below. In most cases this is because parish-level plans were not created for areas such as national parks, where there were few land transactions to record. Plans showing these locations can be downloaded from the landata website under the section 'Central Plan Office Records'. 5001 Township of Aberfeldy 2016 Parish of Angora 2001 Parish of Acheron 2017
