This Corps Headquarters was formed in Canada on 1 September 1939, but was not formally established in the United Kingdom until 25 December 1940. The Corps Headquarters was not deployed in Sicily, but landed in Italy. It became operational in late 1943, taking under command the 1st Canadian Infantry Division, the 5th Canadian Armoured Division and the Canadian Armoured Brigade. The establishment of Corps Troops numbered about 8,500 men. Lieutenant General E. L. M. BURNS commanded this corps throughout the Italian campaign. The corps formed part of 8th Army, being deployed on the Adriatic front. The corps headquarters was transferred to North West Europe in March 1945 in order to bring all the Canadian formations together in one theatre. 2. Brigadier R. J. LEACH, M.C. was in command of this formation from 15 September 1941 when this Army Group was formed, until 25 January 1944. Brigadier W. E. HUCKVALE commanded this Army Group from 26 January until 7 December 1944, when Brigadier L. G. CLARKE, O.B.E. assumed command with effect from 26 December 1944 until April 1945.
