The University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign community of students, scholars, and alumni is changing the world. An original land-grant university, Illinois pioneers innovative research, tackles global problems, and expands the human experience. Transformative learning experiences, in and out of the classroom, produce alumni who are leaders. Outstanding academic programs, award-winning faculty, extraordinary resources, and bountiful opportunities attract top-caliber students. They join research teams, study abroad, create innovative art, and serve in communities. In Fall 2018, the university welcomes the inaugural class of its first new college in 60 years—the Carle Illinois College of Medicine.

Sepsis strikes roughly 20 percent of patients admitted to hospital intensive care units. Being able to test patients at the bedside rather than having to send blood off to the lab for analysis allows doctors to detect the infection sooner and accelerate treatment. The device can also be used to determine whether a patient is improving or not, and ultimately may assist in providing a prognosis.

THE HUMANITIES EXAMINING HOW WE RELATE TO ANIMALS The Center for Advanced Study in Urbana-Champaign, along with the nonprofit Animals and Society Institute, hosted scholars from around the world for a week last summer to look at humans’ relationships with animals at a unique Human-Animal Studies Summer Institute. Anthropology professor Jane Desmond, a co-director of the institute, said researchers in biology, ecology, and animal sciences have long studied human-animal relations, but the field has exploded in the last 10 years in the humanities. Scholars in literary studies, sociology, and the arts are asking different questions about those relationships. The institute was cosponsored by the Carl R. Woese Institute for Genomic Biology and the anthropology department.

9 SEX DOESN’T REALLY SELL Advertising professor John Wirtz was the lead researcher on a meta-analysis of 78 peer-reviewed studies looking at the effects of sexual appeals in advertising. What they found was that while people remember ads with sexual appeals more than those without, such recall didn’t translate into a more positive view of the brands or products featured in the ads. In fact, not only were study participants no more likely to remember the brands featured in ads with sexual appeals, they were more likely to have a negative attitude towards those brands, and they had no greater interest in making a purchase.

Students from a variety of disciplines conduct research and imagine, develop, prototype, and propose solutions that are presented to high-level executives. While students gain real-life industry experience, the industries are getting fresh ideas from new perspectives. One of many corporations working with the Innovation Center, Caterpillar, Inc., recently extended its partnership by establishing a research lab to focus on the digital realities of the 21st century.

MAKING A GLOBAL IMPACT WITH MEDICAL TRAINING The UIC Department of Obstetrics & Gynecology is providing specialty training to medical students in Ethiopia, where a developing infrastructure and a shortage of doctors means only 10 percent of pregnant women have access to obstetric care. This initiative, known as the Mela Project, aims to improve medical education through the establishment of an OB/GYN Center of Excellence at Mekelle University in Ethiopia. UIC professors provide basic specialty training, as well as sub- specialty lectures on topics such as reproductive endocrinology and gynecologic oncology. In 2017, the program graduated its first class of five faculty members, and currently has 29 residents-in-training.

13 CITY GARDEN ADDRESSES FOOD INSECURITY, SUSTAINABILITY Two undergraduate students from UIC’s College of Education have developed the university’s first urban garden, aiming to address issues of sustainability and food security in low-income Chicago communities. Having both grown up in the city, Dorrian Neeley and Lashawn Evans say they know how unhealthy and costly it can be to live off food from the corner store, and hope to spur interest in urban community gardening as an alternative. The students obtained a plot of land at the corner of Harrison and Halsted and funding from UIC to partner with organic gardening experts to launch the garden. The first summer’s harvest was sold at local farmers markets and to UIC students.

16 DIGITAL PHOTOGRAPHY TECHNIQUE COMBINES ART AND SCIENCE Researchers at the University of Illinois at Springfield are combining art and science by using a new method of digital photography to help view microorganisms on a larger scale. The technique, called focus stacking, uses computer software to combine multiple photographs taken at different focus distances. The result is a single picture with greater sharpness or depth of field throughout the image. So far, the team has photographed a number of insects, flowers, algae, and zooplankton, and hope to tackle protozoa in the future. The UIS team was asked to present their scientific artwork at the Saint Louis Science Center.

INNOCENCE PROJECT HELPS EXONERATE ELEVENTH CLIENT

In summer 2017, Bill Amor walked free from the DuPage County jail after 22 years of incarceration thanks to the work of the UIS Innocence Project (IIP). He is the eleventh IIP client to have an overturned conviction since its founding in 2001. Amor’s case is believed to be the first of its kind in the state in which a court has found that advancements in fire science constitute newly discovered evidence of actual innocence. IIP’s attorneys, law school students from the state’s three public law schools, and undergraduates from UIS review more than 300 requests for help from Illinois inmates each year to carefully select those with merit for legal pursuit.
