Meet Twistzz and the rest of historic American team, Team Liquid, at Front Row. Closer than ever before. BLAST Pro Series Los Angeles: Front Row on July 13-14 is a brand new concept from BLAST Pro Series. Front Row will put you right next to the players in an old school, yet exclusive and premium, LAN party feeling. Whether you’re new to BLAST or you’ve joined us in the past, things are going to be a bit different. Here’s a compiled guide to Front Row that’ll take you through the new and exciting elements of the tournament. This guide includes: • What is Front Row? • Information about the teams attending • Talent crew • Match schedule What is Front Row? Front Row is the debut of an exciting concept from BLAST, introducing open production area with studios, stages and exclusive team zones where fans are much closer to all the players, talent, media and production crew. Major changes to the format include two BO3 semifinals after the five initial group stage rounds. Only two games will be played simultaneously during the group stage matches except for the fifth and final round where three matches will be played like usual. The prize pool remains a staggering $250,000. Fans are basically invited into the engine room of a premier Counter-Strike tournament. It gives an insight into the thousands of interesting things going on during a tournament that a fan will never see otherwise. This includes exclusive access to: • Stage- and player zones • Talent Studios • Open production area • Open Media Zones • Caster’s boxes • Intimate stages • Photo opportunities and special guests The set-up planned for Front Row will be a more compressed version of the BLAST Pro Series you’re used to, but a priority has been to maintain the feeling of a premium Counter-Strike tournament, so consider it a high production-value LAN tournament with some of the best teams in the world attending and walking around side-by-side with the fans. The teams coming to BLAST Pro Series Los Angeles: Front Row Team Liquid (US) The best team in the world is coming to LA, not only to further establish their era but to win in front of a home crowd. Team Liquid is the undisputed team to beat at BLAST Front Row having just won ESL One Cologne and the Intel Grand Slam. The North-American superteam recently dethroned Astralis as the best team in the world and have continued to display utter dominance in the global Counter-Strike scene. Local fans can be assured to show up and cheer with an incredible amount of confidence for this world-class team. As a US fan of this superteam, your chance to meet the legends is right around the corner. Roster: Eric “adreN” Hoag, Coach Jonathan “ELiGE” Jablonowski, Rifler / Entry Fragger Nicholas “nitr0” Cannella, In-Game Leader / AWP Jacky “Stewie2k” Yip, Entry Fragger / AWP Russel “Twistzz” David Van Dulken, Rifler Keith “NAF” Markovic, Rifler / AWP / Lurker Look out for: ELiGE who’s been playing phenomenally for the last few months. Read more about Team Liquid here. Cloud9 (US) Cloud9 has been through a lot of changes since winning the Boston Major last year. Started off by losing Stewie2k to MIBR, and later tarik left as well. Ever since then Cloud9 have tried various options and none of them has been successful. They have now faced the consequences and realized they need to rebuild from scratch with a completely new roster with only autimatic remaining from the old squad. It’s difficult to say anything about their current form but they might surprise at Front Row. Roster: James “JamezIRL” Macaulay, Coach Timothy “autimatic” Ta, AWP / Rifler / Lurker Damian “daps” Steele, In-Game Leader / Rifler / Entry Fragger Óscar “mixwell” Cañellas Colocho, AWP Kenneth “koosta” Suen, Rifler / AWP Tyson “TenZ” Ngo, Rifler / AWP Look out for: Cloud9 have brought in three AWP’ers in their new squad of which two of them, mixwell and koosta, have lots of experience playing at the top level and are deadly once they get momentum. Read more about Cloud9 here. FaZe Clan (EU) The team consisting of some of the most skilled players in the scene has recently undergone some roster changes so things are a bit up in the air at this point. The notorious US organization will be playing with a substitute, Filip “NEO” Fubski, who is one of Counter-Strike’s most famous veterans - so the team has, by no means, gone down in experience. FaZe Clan reached the quarter- and semifinals in their two most recent premier tournaments, not counting Cologne which was a failure for the team, but if they’re able to reset and find their groove with NEO, they could prove a tough contender at Front Row. Roster: Janko “YNk” Paunović, Coach Håvard “rain” Nygaard, Rifler / Entry Fragger Nikola “NiKo” Kovač, Rifler / AWP Ladislav “GuardiaN” Kovács, AWP Olof “olofmeister” Kajbjer Gustafsson, Rifler / Lurker / AWP Filip “NEO” Kubski, In-Game Leader Look out for: NEO has had a swinging performance in the team. He will have to lead the team but also boost his individual performance a bit. Read more about FaZe Clan here. MIBR (Brazil) The legendary Brazilian team is going through an experimental phase these days. They recently benched longtime member João "felps" Vasconcellos and are instead taking in some young blood, the incredibly talented Lucas “LUCAS1” Teles. They will need some of the old, raw power to overcome the other teams at BLAST Front Row, but the new addition to the team is a scary addition to an already frightening team. Roster: Wilton “zews” Prado, Coach Gabriel “FalleN” Toledo, In-Game Leader / AWP Fernando “fer” Alvarenga, Rifler / Entry Fragger Marcelo “coldzera” David, Rifler / AWP Lucas “LUCAS1” Teles, Rifler / Support Epitácio de Melo “TACO” Pessoa Filho, Rifler / Entry Fragger / Support Look out for: LUCAS1 had a slow start to Cologne but seemed to slowly get into the rhythm. Despite MIBR being eliminated quite early, LUCAS1 gave us a glimpse of what he can bring to MIBR. Read more about MIBR here. NRG (US) The Los Angeles based team have a large repertoire of teams in different esports, especially prevalent in Rocket League. But NRG also has a great Counter-Strike team with legendary basketball player Shaquille O’Neal backing the organization as an investor. NRG has been popping up at big tournaments recently and puts up a challenge for even the best teams. NRG are making their BLAST debut in LA and is arguably North America’s biggest contender for an upset win at Front Row. Roster: Chet "ImAPet" Singh, Coach Vincent “Brehze” Cayonte, Rifler Cvetelin “CeRq” Dimitrov, AWP Ethan “Ethan” Arnold, Rifler Tarik “tarik” Celik, Rifler / Entry Fragger Peter “stanislaw” Jarguz, In-Game Leader / Rifler Look out for: NRG replaced daps with stanislaw to bring in more firepower to the In-Game Leader role and are arguably the dark horse of the tournament with big upset potential. Read more about NRG here. Renegades (Australia) Renegades is living proof that if a team sticks together long enough, they can do great things. Renegades have always been a good team, but recently they have been a great team. The Australian team qualified for the Berlin Major, winning the Asia Minor Championship. Renegades will be making their BLAST debut and will fit in perfectly given them being an incredibly exciting team to watch when they start having momentum. Roster: Aleksandar "kassad" Trifunović, Coach Aaron “AZR” Ward, In-Game Leader Justin “jks” Savage, Rifler Joakim “jkaem” Myrbostad, Rifler Jay “Liazz” Tregillgas, Rifler / Support Sean “Gratisfaction” Kaiwai, AWP Look out for: Liazz had a rough tournament in Cologne. He needs to perform for Renegades to have a chance at the trophy. Read more about Renegades here. Talent crew Aside from the teams, fans at BLAST Pro Series Los Angeles: Front Row will also be rubbing shoulders with the incredible talent coming. Most notably, world-famous Eefje “Sjokz” Depoortere who will be returning to BLAST Pro Series after her Counter-Strike debut in São Paulo. Desk talent: Showhost: Tres “stunna” Saranthus Deskhost: Eefje “Sjokz” Depoortere Reporter: Frankie Ward Analyst: Jordan “n0thing” Gilbert Analyst: Chad “SPUNJ” Burchill Analyst: Christine “Potter” Chi Analyst: Sean “seang@res” Gares Sjokz made a huge name for herself in League of Legends with close to 1.5 million followers across social media. The talented desk host is ready to take on the world of Counter-Strike again at Front Row. Casters: Jason “moses” O’Toole Mohan “Launders” Govindasamy James Bardolph Anders Blume Hugo Byron Daniel “ddk” Kapadia It will be possible to experience first hand how the desk, caster boxes and hosts work, and it will be possible to meet some of the most famous esports talents.

This report addresses questions we get most often from investors about eSports: ➢ What is eSports? Definitions differ. Our definition of eSports is “players competing at a video game in front of a live audience while being live-streamed.” By implication, viewing, attendance, and playing time are linked, and each creates revenue streams for eSports. ➢ How big is eSports? Globally, one out of every three (ie, 33%) 18-25 year olds spent more than an hour a day playing video games, 395mm people watched eSports, and 250mm people played Fortnite in 2018. eSports revenue will be $1.1B in 2019, up 26% y/y. ➢ Should investors care about eSports? We would argue “yes”, owing to: a) global scale; b) time spent playing and viewing; c) compelling demographics; d) eSports vs traditional sports trends; e) revenue growth; and, f) sports betting should supercharge US eSports. ➢ Is eSports a fad? We would argue “no”, owing to: a) many US Universities now offer Varsity eSports scholarships; b) new special purpose eSports stadiums are proliferating; c) billionaires are investing to make eSports successful; d) audience growth; and, e) Olympics potential. ➢ Why have you never heard of eSports? Because zero of the top 30 earning players in the world were from the US in 2018.

To rise through the ranks, players specialize in a specific game, developing their skills through extensive, competitive play. Viger: Professional Gamers PROFESSIONAL GAMERS ARE TODAY’S PROFESSIONAL ATHLETES Troy Viger ABSTRACT Recall the adversities faced by many in the entertainment industry. Freddie Mercury tried to join several bands before forming Queen. Judy Garland signed with Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer at age thirteen after performing with her sisters throughout her childhood. Babe Ruth signed his first professional baseball contract with the minor-league Baltimore Orioles. Those same historic adversities faced by these giants of the entertainment industry are being repeated today in a closely related field—the Esports industry. Esports, a form of competitive video gaming, attracts audiences that “rival some of the world’s great sporting events.” A thorough due diligence review of the industry-norm contract must be undertaken. Esports professionals continue to fall victim to handshake deals put to paper like so many entertainers before them.

PRACTICING WORK, PERFECTING PLAY: LEAGUE OF LEGENDS AND THE SENTI- MENTAL EDUCATION OF E-SPORTS by NEAL HINNANT Under the Direction of Ted Friedman ABSTRACT A growing force in the culture of digital games fandom, e-sports represents the profes- sionalization of digital games play. This thesis examines League of Legends , a prominent game in e-sports, to understand the relationship between e-sports and the ideology of neoliberal eco- nomics. Using Clifford Geertz’s descriptions of sentimental education as a model, the author ar- gues that League of Legends and other e-sports texts create an environment where neoliberal economic values can be practiced and explored in a meaningful space. The game as text, the cul- ture of e-sports fandom, and the e-sports broadcasting industry are all examined to reveal the ways that e-sports fosters a space to both practice neoliberal values and potentially question them through the conflicting values of Web culture.

  • Game Narrative Review
Game Narrative Review Name: Brenda Challender School: DigiPen Institute of Technology Email: [email protected] Month/Year Submitted: December 2013 Game Title: League of Legends Platform: PC Genre: Multiplayer Online Battle Arena (MOBA) Release Date: October 27, 2009 Developer: Riot Games Publisher: Riot Games Design Director: Tom Cadwell Lead Designer: Christina Norman Overview The narrative in League of Legends is centered primarily around the interactions between various factions in the continent of Valoran, though individual Champions do have an impact on those interactions. This conflict is driven by the archetypal struggle between light and dark, embodied most prominently through two of Valoran's most powerful city-states, Demacia and Noxus, though other factions also play important roles. Warfare has been a part of Runeterra, the world in which the game takes place, since ancient times. These skirmishes – between city-states, as in present day, or warring tribes, as in the past – have always been augmented with the use of powerful magic. The use of magic in these battles, as discovered in recent centuries, has taken its toll on the land, altering the landscape, and causing phenomena such as violent, magically charged storms. Out of fear that another war would cause irreparable damage to Runeterra, some of Valoran's most powerful sorcerers created an organization, the 'League of Legends', to serve as a battle ground for settling disputes. Characters League of Legends currently boasts 117 unique Champions, each with their own allegiance and motivations, but since the overarching narrative of the game is focused on the conflicts between the world's factions, this section will cover the most influential groups, rather than specific individuals.
