ALEX PERRY unleashed his lethal backhand and forehand attack to win the City of Liverpool Open at the Liverpool Tennis Centre, the curtain-raising event of the new season. This showed when he only beat the improving Peter Cleminson (Essex) 3-1 in the quarters. Further proof that Perry is starting the campaign with confidence came when he won the new (experimental) "Star singles" event, stopping Ryan Jenkins 7, -6, 7, 7 in the final. Brian Halliday reflects on the 100 CLUB CRUISE 2003 THIS YEAR'S 100 Club outing followed the example of a couple of years ago. Again we were all canal bound, but this time with a marked difference. An extended, and somewhat fraught, Annual General Meeting concluded at an advanced hour, which left our intrepid canal cruisers little time to prepare for the rigours of the waterways. Therefore the coach left Milton Keynes to journey to the marina, where the boat was moored, a little late. Don't ask me about the route, where we went, or what boatyard we went from. I know Milton Keynes is supposed to be designed on a grid system but its directions remain one of life's mysteries. To follow signs out into the neighbouring wilds was beyond me. Anyway it was a jolly pretty route to wherever we went. Our cruise was just perfect. Roomy, comfortable boat.A quite wonderful meal.Totally English with excellent fish and chips. Copious draughts of wine and beer. Even coffee and After Eight mints added a thoughtful and appreciative touch to the whole proceedings. Of course it is the passengers that make a cruise, and this time we got a truly exceptional lot, right from our brilliant orga.niser Doreen Stannard, to the old Chairman's wife through to the new Chairman's wife, and the old "new" Chairman. Shame there was no haggis for the Chief Executive, but you can't provide everything. Sincere thanks to Doreen for all tHe work and effort she put in to make this such a happy and memorable event. Can't wa.it for next year. Ship Canal (or will it be'Suez?) here we come. Pictured left enjoying themselves are new ETTA Chairman ALEX MURDOCH and his wife VAL.
