IMPORTANT INFORMATION The purpose of the sixth grade proficiency test in Ohio is to measure a student's level of literacy and basic competency in the areas of Writing, Reading, Mathematics, Citizenship, and Science. 1. Test date is the first Monday after March 15th and the tests are given in the following order: Monday - Writing up to 2 and 1/2 hours Tuesday - Reading up to 2 and 1/2 hours Wednesday - Math up to 2 and 1/2 hours Thursday - Citizenship up to 2 and 1/2 hours FridayScience up to 2 and 1/2 hours All make-up testing must be completed within fifteen calendar days of the last regularly scheduled test administration date. 2. In the 6th grade, the test items will be contained in two separate booklets: one for Writing, Reading, and Mathematics and a second for Citizenship and Science. There is one answer booklet for all five testing areas. Students need number two pencils for the multiple-choice sections of the test and either a pencil or pen for the writing test section. 3. There are three types of questions: multiple choice, short answer, and extended response. Each multiple choice question has four responses, only one of which is correct. 4. The short-answer and extended-response items and the two writings relating to one topic must be legible to be scored. Cursive writing or printing is permitted. Extended responses are expected to be at least 4 sentences in length. 5. Students are allowed and encouraged to use calculators and protractors for the Mathematics portion of the sixth grade proficiency test. They may not bring other test helpers-or manipulatives. Items are designed to be calculator neutral; that is, using a calculator will not give an advantage. 6. Students will not be permitted to use any reference materials. Maps and charts must be covered or removed during the test administration. 7. Students who have been identified with an IEP or 504 Education Plan will follow the recommendations of the IEP or 504 team and the adjustments and modifications stated in the IEP or 504 Plan. 4 CALCULATOR INFORMATION Test security requires certain restrictions be placed upon the capabilities and types of calculators that may be used by students on the test. Graphing calculators with certain word processing capabilities are not allowed. Calculators with any of the following capabilities cannot be used: spelling/spell check graphing capabilities large programmable (100 steps or more) tape or paper outputs spreadsheet managers word processors, word input or storage dictionary or thesaurus electronic references, organizers, personal planners, or travel organizers telephone dialers laptop or hand-held computers Acceptable calculators include most four-function calculators and scientific calculators without graphing capablities. Calculators with fraction capabilities (e.g., Casio FX-115, Sharp ELE300, and TI Math Explorer) are acceptable.     America’s Pastime: How Baseball Went from Hoboken to the World Series An Honors Thesis (HONR 499) by Kimberly Parkhurst Thesis Advisor Dr. Bruce Geelhoed Ball State University Muncie, Indiana April 2020 Expected Date of Graduation July 2020 Abstract Baseball is known as “America’s Pastime.” Any sports aficionado can spout off facts about the National or American League based on who they support. It is much more difficult to talk about the early days of baseball. Baseball is one of the oldest sports in America, and the 1800s were especially crucial in creating and developing modern baseball. This paper looks at the first sixty years of baseball history, focusing especially on how the World Series came about in 1903 and was set as an annual event by 1905.     Baseball, Jews and the American dream by Jared Sichel, posted on Apr. 7, 2016 at 11:08 am In 1903, the Yiddish-language Forverts published a letter from a Russian immigrant, who’d written to say he didn’t understand the point of the game of baseball, the sport so beloved by all Americans. “What is the point of a crazy game like baseball?” the perplexed reader asked. “I want my boy to grow up to be a mensh, not a wild American runner.” “Let your boys play baseball and play it well,” Forverts publisher Abraham Cahan wrote back. “Let us not raise the children that they grow up foreigners in their own birthplace.” Six years later, the Forverts published a column that attempted to explain this strange game to its readers, many of them recent immigrants from Europe eager to leave behind the Old Country to become American. The piece was illustrated with a baseball diamond with Yiddish notations, including detailed explanations of the “defense party” and the “enemy party” — meaning the team in the field and the team at bat. “To us immigrants, this all seems crazy, however, it’s worthwhile to understand what kind of craziness it is,” the Forverts said. “If an entire nation is crazy over something, it’s not too much to ask to try and understand what it means.” More than a century later, Americans are still crazy about baseball. Even with their ace Don Newcombe on the mound, the Dodgers seemed to be doomed from the start, as three Yankee home runs set back Newcombe and the rest of the team in their opening 6-5 loss. Game 2 had the same result, as New York's southpaw Tommy Byrne held Brooklyn to five hits in a 4-2 victory. With the Series heading back to Brooklyn, Johnny Podres was given the start for Game 3. The Dodger lefty stymied the Yankees' offense over the first seven innings by allowing one run on four hits en route to an 8-3 victory. Podres gave the Dodger faithful a hint as to what lay ahead in the series with his complete-game, six-strikeout performance. Game 4 at Ebbets Field turned out to be an all-out slugfest. After falling behind early, 3-1, the Dodgers used the long ball to knot up the series. Future Hall of Famers Roy Campanella and Duke Snider each homered and Gil Hodges collected three of the club’s 14 hits, including a home run in the 8-5 triumph. Snider's third and fourth home runs of the Series provided the support needed for rookie Roger Craig and the Dodgers took Game 5 by a score of 5-3.
