Russ Pry Posthumously Presented 2017 H. Peter Burg Award ‘Just a Guy from Mogadore’

If you were to ask former Summit County Executive Director Russ Pry to describe himself, he would probably pause and quietly respond, “I’m just a guy from Mogadore.”

Described by many as an amazing friend and mentor, that guy, Russell Pry, is this year’s recipient of the H. Peter Burg Award, an award presented annually by the Greater Akron Chamber. Last year’s recipient Anthony J. Alexander presented the award.

“Although Russ left us too soon at age 58, his legacy lives on,” said Daniel C. Colantone, President & CEO of the Greater Akron Chamber. “As one of the architects for change in the area, Russ stood alongside many as the area charted its way forward with a vision for a better community.” Russ’ efforts have been honored by The Akron Boards of Trade His passion for people and making things better propelled Russ on Council, the Greater Akron Chamber, and the Joint his journey as a leader, which began on the Mogadore Village Council at Office of Economic Development. age 19. A graduate of and with a law degree from the University of Akron, Russ went on to serve numerous public service Russ was just 58 when he learned he had colon cancer. Always the roles, including Summit County Democratic Party Chairman and Summit optimist, Russ quoted Will Rogers when asked if he was concerned County Executive, a position he held for nine years. by his diagnosis, “Worrying is like paying a debt that might never come due.” As a public servant, community partnership was the hallmark of Russ’ administration as he collaborated with numerous government offices and community organizations to save tax dollars, eliminate governmental redundancies and enhance services for citizens. Russ helped steer the county through a recession, following the 2008 housing collapse. He worked alongside former Mayor Don Plusquellic, spearheading the county’s economic development role in convincing Bridgestone Americas Tire Operations Technical Center and the Goodyear Tire & Rubber Company Global and North American Headquarters and Innovation Center to stay in Akron.

His legacy continues with ongoing services provided by the $2.2M Veterans Service Commission Building on Waterloo Road. Also under his leadership, the County’s Division of Animal Control opened a new facility that has become a model for other counties and cities.

With a reputation as a collaborator, Russ brought together a group of more than 53 community leaders to discuss the need for a coordinated early childhood system in Summit County. The initiative was called First Things First. 8
