  • 'Bitter Hedge': Narrative, Nationalism, and the Construction of Afrikaner Identity In
SPECIAL ISSUE ––– 2011 PERSPECTIVES ON POWER CONFERENCE VOLUME VI ISSUE 11 2013 ISSN: 1833-878X Pages 29-38 Sheilagh Ilona O’Brien The Construction of a ‘Bitter Hedge’: Narrative, Nationalism, and the Construction of Afrikaner Identity in the Voortrekker Monument ABSTRACT During the early settlement of South Africa, the governor, Jan Van Riebeeck, grew a hedge of Bitter Almond to divide the fledgling colony from the local population. The journey of the Voortrekkers who escaped British rule into the interior would become an important focal point of Afrikaner nationalism, and the single most important event in Afrikaner history and mythology. The construction of the Voortrekker Monument, and the narrative it presents, are important for understanding how the Afrikaners constructed and used their past. Afrikaners clung to their imagined past in a present where everything seemed doubtful, and in so doing they attempted once again to cut themselves off from the world around them. Through Afrikaner nationalism Jan Van Riebeeck’s ‘Bitter Almond hedge’ returned to South Africa in the twentieth-century. BIOGRAPHY Sheilagh Ilona O’Brien has a Bachelor of Arts (Hons), with a double-major in History and First Class Honours, and a Masters of International Studies both from The University of Queensland. She is currently a PhD Candidate in the School of History, Philosophy, Religion and Classics at The University of Queensland. Her major fields of interest are oppression and its causes, genocide and communal violence, and history as myth: how we tell narratives about the past. 29 THE CONSTRUCTION OF A ‘B ITTER HEDGE ’: NARRATIVE , NATIONALISM , AND THE CONSTRUCTION OF AFRIKANER IDENTITY IN THE VOORTREKKER MONUMENT This In 1938, centennial celebrations took place upon the site of a nineteenth-century battle at Bloedrivier , in commemoration of the conflict between the Dutch Voortrekkers – who in 1838 were moving north to escape British rule – and the Zulu impis .

  • THE STATUE N the 20Th of August, 1895, Mr
THE PRESIDENT 'This speech was delivered b'J) M. B. N aidoo, vice-principal of the Sastri Indian College. Durban. at Caux (Switzeria'nd) on the 15th jul'J). 1954. The occasion was a world conference -of the M oral Rearmament Movement. ESTERDAY was the anniversary of Paul Kruger and it is only fitting Y_ that as a South African I should pay homage and tribute to the memory of a great South African whose vision and statesmanship had paved the way for South Africa's economic prosperity. One cannot help admiring a man who carried in his veins the blood of the Afrikaner and one who derived his inspiration and his entire philosophy of life from the Holy Bible. At the twilight of his political career, he found Asylum along the beautiful shores of lake Geneva and his troubled mind seared by the frustrations and sorrows of the events in South Africa, found solace and divine fellowship in the precincts of Caux. Whatever be our political and social disabilities, as South Africans, we cannot help but recognise the greatness of one who will for ever be revered as one of the most illustrious sons of our country. M. B. NATDOO. Caux. 15th July, 1954. THE STATUE N the 20th of August, 1895, Mr. P. Samuel Marks donated £10,000 O for the purpose of erecting a statue of President Kruger on Church Square. This gift from a rich Jew of Johannesburg, was meant as a gesture of goodwill and esteem by all the subjects of the Transvaal Republic no matter to what denomination they belonged.

  • June 1969 ITALIAN POW in SOUTH AFRICA
The South African Military History Society Die Suid-Afrikaanse Krygshistoriese Vereniging Military History Journal Vol 1 No 4 - June 1969 ITALIAN P.O.W. IN SOUTH AFRICA (Medical Services) By LT. COL. L. BLUMBERG, ED (With the exception of Russia, all the belligerents in World War II were signatories to the Geneva Convention of 1929 relative to the treatment of Prisoners of War. This elaborate and lengthy code provides for almost every contingency that might face the prisoner, and its dominant note is that in all circumstances treatment shall be humane. It is not generally known, for example, that the Convention lays down that the food ration of prisoners shall be the equivalent in quantity and quality of that of depot troops. Another article states that medical attention of every kind shall be given a prisoner, when necessary. It is now common knowledge that the treatment meted out to Allied prisoners both in Europe and the East bore very little resemblance to that laid down by the Convention. In South Africa, on the other hand, where for some years we held nca4y 100,000 Italian prisoners, the Articles of the Geneva Convention were most strictly observed, both in the letter and the spirit. Well fed, well housed, well clothed and given the best of medical care, these prisoners were maintained in an excellent state of health. In fact, the general sick rate throughout their period of captivity was consistently lower than that among U.D.F. troops in the Union. The writer of this article, a doctor now back in general practice, was intimately associated with the medical care of the prisoners from the outset until his release from the Forces in 1946.

  • Memories of a Lost Cause. Comparing Remembrance of the Civil War by Southerners to the Anglo-Boer War by Afrikaners
Historia, 52, 2, November 2006, pp 199-226. Memories of a Lost Cause. Comparing remembrance of the Civil War by Southerners to the Anglo-Boer War by Afrikaners Jackie Grobler* The Civil War in the United States (1861-1865) and the Anglo-Boer War in South Africa (1899-1902) hardly seem comparable. In the first place, the war in America was a civil war with no foreign power involved, while the one in South Africa was a colonial war in the sense that Britain entered the war as a colonial power with the objective of safeguarding her colonial supremacy in South Africa. In the second place, the Civil War was a much “bigger” war than the Anglo-Boer War, both in number of participants and in number of casualties suffered on both sides. The mere fact that no prominent historian has ever produced a comparative study of the two wars or even of aspects of the two wars, also places the comparability of the wars in doubt. However, there are a number of similarities between the two wars, such as the massive material, as well as psychological losses suffered by the vanquished in both wars; the intentional destruction of the territory of the vanquished carried out by the victorious side in both cases; the participation of blacks; the political issues relating to the abysmal fate of blacks in the eventual post-war dispensation in both cases; and lastly the fact that even though the South and the Boers were the losers, in both cases they managed to have their leaders and heroes such as Robert E.

  • Toppled Statues and Fallen Icons: Negotiating Monuments to British Imperialism and Afrikaner Nationalism at Post-Apartheid Universities
Toppled Statues and Fallen Icons: Negotiating Monuments to British Imperialism and Afrikaner Nationalism at Post-Apartheid Universities Brenda Schmahmann Some time prior to March 2013, when I was in the happy position of taking up a professorship at the University of Johannesburg, a sequence of events took place that marked the beginnings of my interest in the topic of this inaugural address. As they pertained to a council chamber, it seems particularly apt that I should recount them to an audience gathered in such a space – albeit in one different in style and history to the council chamber concerned. Background: A Council Chamber, Some Portraits and a Tapestry In late 2008, when I was a professor at Rhodes University, I wrote a letter on behalf of the institution’s Gender Forum to its vice-chancellor at the time, Saleem Badat. Mooting for the relocation of various portraits of former vice chancellors and chairs of council which had been hanging in the council chamber of the university since the 1960s, the letter focused on the possible inappropriateness of displaying images of uniformly white and male figureheads in such a context. Although I had in fact envisaged this letter simply for consideration by the vice chancellor himself, it ended up being submitted to faculty boards for their consideration also. There it became the subject of heated argument. Sabine Marschall (2010: 142) suggests that many white South Africans are reluctant to condone any adjustments to the placement of inherited art not because they necessarily share values associated with the works in question but rather because they perceive such acts as “threats to their sense of cultural identity and their future in the country”.

A SERIES OF EAFLLY MORNING TALKS BROADCAST BY THE S A B C - 1972. "SOME PERSONALITIES OF EARLY JOHANNESBURG" MEN OF THEIR TIMES Foreword The Johannesburg Historical Society is pleased to present this publication, the second of a series coinciding with Johannesburg's Birthday (Johannesburg is 87). This publication is based on a series of early morning radio ralks on the English programme in September/October 1972, entitled "Men of Their Times". A great deal of research has been undertaken by members of the Executive Committee of this Society in preparing these talks especially the aspects of Historical importance in the beginnings and development of early Johannesburg. In this respect it is unique and important because it brings together from many sources, into one publication, the many facets of the early romantic growth of Johannesburg associated with so many colourful personalities. The Society is extremely grateful to those who have contributed to this publication which will undoubtedly be most welcome especially to all our members. A word of thanks is also due to Mr W. Osburn for his part in achieving this publication. Typesetting and Layout by DANDO & VAN WYK (PTY.) LTD. Printed by AFRICAN EAGLE. TALK ON LEANDER STARR JAMESON PREPARED BY LUDI LOCHNER FOR JOHANNESBURG HISTORICAL SOCIETY. 5 Minutes exactly. Everyone knows about the Jameson Raid - but who was the Jameson who gave his name to this infamous expedition? Leander Starr Jameson was born on 9th February, 1853, the youngest of 11 children born to the wife of an Edinburgh lawyer turned poet. Though small of stature, Jameson nevertheless excelled at school sports showing early promise of the indomitable spirit that was to characterise his life.

It will also examine the different translation choices that Hobhouse made in the translation process and what motivated these decisions. The study will construct a narrative by using the background provided by autobiographies, letters, diaries, newspaper articles, etc. to evaluate Hobhouse’s speech and to see if they might shed light on the writing of the speech and the consequent translation choices.
