CEPF SMALL GRANT FINAL PROJECT COMPLETION REPORT Organization Legal Name: - Tarantula (Araneae: Theraphosidae) spider diversity, distribution and habitat-use: A study on Protected Area adequacy and Project Title: conservation planning at a landscape level in the Western Ghats of Uttara Kannada district, Karnataka Date of Report: 18 August 2011 Dr. Manju Siliwal Wildlife Information Liaison Development Society Report Author and Contact 9-A, Lal Bahadur Colony, Near Bharathi Colony Information Peelamedu Coimbatore 641004 Tamil Nadu, India CEPF Region: The Western Ghats Region (Sahyadri-Konkan and Malnad-Kodugu Corridors). 2. Strategic Direction: To improve the conservation of globally threatened species of the Western Ghats through systematic conservation planning and action. The present project aimed to improve the conservation status of two globally threatened (Molur et al. 2008b, Siliwal et al., 2008b) ground dwelling theraphosid species, Thrigmopoeus insignis and T. truculentus endemic to the Western Ghats through systematic conservation planning and action. Investment Priority 2.1 Monitor and assess the conservation status of globally threatened species with an emphasis on lesser-known organisms such as reptiles and fish. The present project was focused on an ignored or lesser-known group of spiders called Tarantulas/ Theraphosid spiders and provided valuable information on population status and potential conservation sites in Uttara Kannada district, which will help in future monitoring and assessment of conservation status of the two globally threatened theraphosid species T. insignis and Near Threatened T. truculentus. Investment Priority 2.3. Evaluate the existing protected area network for adequate globally threatened species representation and assess effectiveness of protected area types in biodiversity conservation.

  • B. Pre-Feasibility Report (Extracts of DPR) 1
Water Re-circulation and Environmental Sustainability Pre-feasibility Report Project for Jog Falls, Shivamogga District Karnataka B. Pre-feasibility report (extracts of DPR) 1. Executive Summary x The proposed project is a water recirculation project by pumping 400 cusecs of water in the summer months (8 months, November - June) from the storage pond near MGHE to the weir proposed to be constructed in the upstream of Sita Katte bridge and use the reversible flow in the same pipeline for generating power for 4 months (July-October). x The water from the weir will be released to the falls in the summer months (for about 8 months from November to June). This pumped water, drops over the falls for a maximum of about 8 hours each day for 8 months. The discharged water at the upstream will have a natural distribution through cascades before the drop in the falls. x In rainy season (June to October), the same pipeline would be used to generate power. The pump house/power house will be located in the area opposite side of Mahatma Gandhi Hydro Electric (MGHE) power house adjacent to Ambuthirtha reservoir/MGHE powerhouse tail water pond. The reservoir has sufficient storage capacity. x The water is pumped directly from the downstream storage pond through two pipes of 1600 mm diameter, which passes through a tunnel near Bombay guest house. The total distance to be covered from the pump house to the foot of the anicut near the Sita Katte bridge shall be approximately 3210 m. x The power house with two generators will be with an installed capacity for generation of power of 16.61 MW each in monsoon months (totalling to 47.84 million units) and the power consumed in non-monsoon months (pump mode) would be 24.74 MW each amounting to 47.80 Million units.

  • River Otter Pilot Survey in the Kali River, Karwar, Uttara Kannada in Summer 2014
River Otter Pilot Survey in the Kali River, Karwar, Uttara Kannada in Summer 2014 Prepared by Rahul Kumar and Mridula Srinivasan Terra Marine Research Institute Project Summary Introduction and Background: Otters belong to the mammalian family Mustelidae (Subfamily Lutrinae). Otters are semi-aquatic fish eating mammals. India is home to three of the four species of river otters in Asia and of the thirteen species of otters found worldwide. The three commonly found river otters in India include common otter- Lutra lutra, smooth-coated otter- Lutrogale perspicillata, and small-clawed otter- Aonyx cinereus. The status of otters from the Indian subcontinent is poorly documented but anecdotal reports suggest that the population may be severely threatened from habitat destruction and poaching. River otters in India range throughout the country especially, smooth-coated otters. Small- clawed otters are sympatric in areas inhabited by smooth-coated otters. All 3 species are found in the Western Ghats and in northeast India. Protected areas have been established in northern, southern, and northeastern parts of India, but few have implemented habitat and conservation plans to understand population status and ecology and protect river otter populations. Breeding populations of otters have been recorded at Corbett and Dudhwa Tiger Reserve, Katerniaghat Wildlife Sanctuary, Kaziranga National Park, Sunderbans, Bhitarkanika and Coringa, Periyar Tiger Reserve and Nagarhole National Park. Otters in India are protected under Schedule II of Wildlife Protection Act of 1972 and are increasingly rare outside national parks and sanctuaries. It is likely that their populations outside of these protected reserves are at risk and poorly studied. Study Area: Karwar, Karnataka, located on the west coast of India is nestled between the Western Ghats mountain range to the east and the Arabian Sea to the west.
