Funding for the Smithsonian Jazz Oral History Program NEA Jazz Master interview was provided by the National Endowment for the Arts. HANK JONES NEA Jazz Master (1989) Interviewee: Hank Jones (July 31, 1918 – May 16, 2010) Interviewer: Bill Brower Date: November 26-27, 2004 Repository: Archives Center, National Museum of American History Description: Transcript, pp. 134 Hank Jones: I was over there for about two and a half weeks doing a promotional tour. I had done a couple of CDs; one was with my brother Elvin and Richard Davis, the bass player. They made – – I think they made two releases from that date. And I did another date with Jack DeJohnette and John Patitucci. But, these two albums were the objects of the promotion. I mean, they promote very, very heavily everyday. I must have had 40 interviews and about 30 record signings at the record shops, plus all of the recording. We did seven concerts and people inevitably want the records, CDs of the concert for us to sign. I have a trio over there, with Jimmy Cobb and John Fink. It was called, “The Great Jazz Trio.” It was not my name, but the Japanese have special names for everything, you know? That's only one in a series of tree others which he called the great jazz trio. The first one was Ron Carter, Tony Williams and myself. But, there had been a succession of different changes in personnel. It changed about six times. The current one was Jimmy Cobb and Dave Fink--Oh, the cookies have arrived and not a minute too soon.

  • Prestige Label Discography
Discography of the Prestige Labels Robert S. Weinstock started the New Jazz label in 1949 in New York City. The Prestige label was started shortly afterwards. Originaly the labels were located at 446 West 50th Street, in 1950 the company was moved to 782 Eighth Avenue. Prestige made a couple more moves in New York City but by 1958 it was located at its more familiar address of 203 South Washington Avenue in Bergenfield, New Jersey. Prestige recorded jazz, folk and rhythm and blues. The New Jazz label issued jazz and was used for a few 10 inch album releases in 1954 and then again for as series of 12 inch albums starting in 1958 and continuing until 1964. The artists on New Jazz were interchangeable with those on the Prestige label and after 1964 the New Jazz label name was dropped. Early on, Weinstock used various New York City recording studios including Nola and Beltone, but he soon started using the Rudy van Gelder studio in Hackensack New Jersey almost exclusively. Rudy van Gelder moved his studio to Englewood Cliffs New Jersey in 1959, which was close to the Prestige office in Bergenfield. Producers for the label, in addition to Weinstock, were Chris Albertson, Ozzie Cadena, Esmond Edwards, Ira Gitler, Cal Lampley Bob Porter and Don Schlitten. Rudy van Gelder engineered most of the Prestige recordings of the 1950’s and 60’s. The line-up of jazz artists on Prestige was impressive, including Gene Ammons, John Coltrane, Miles Davis, Eric Dolphy, Booker Ervin, Art Farmer, Red Garland, Wardell Gray, Richard “Groove” Holmes, Milt Jackson and the Modern Jazz Quartet, “Brother” Jack McDuff, Jackie McLean, Thelonious Monk, Don Patterson, Sonny Rollins, Shirley Scott, Sonny Stitt and Mal Waldron.

  • Rudy Van Gelder in Hackensack: Defining the Jazz Sound in the 1950S
Rudy Van Gelder in Hackensack: Defining the Jazz Sound in the 1950s By Dan Skea Introduction To many jazz aficionados, the name Rudy Van Gelder is virtually syn onymous with jazz recording. Still active today, this reclusive self-taught craftsman is by far the most prolific and accomplished sound engineer in the history of jazz, recording many of the music's most acclaimed albums. In a career that has now spanned half a century and has paralleled devel opments in both modern jazz and recording technology, Van Gelder has contributed to advances in both areas, simultaneously shaping and being shaped by these new developments. Although not a creator of new equipment or technology, Van Gelder has consistently positioned himself at the forefront of technological ad vances and been among the first to embrace and fully exploit innovations as they appeared. His ability to adapt each new technology effectively to the recording of jazz has been an important factor in capturing stylistic changes in the art form over the last fifty years. It can also be argued that his skill in making the music more sonically attractive helped record com panies sell more product, thus providing them with a financial incentive to carry on their activities. Greater record sales also increased audiences for modern jazz, while more widely disseminating important new musical developments. Van Gelder is perhaps most famous for his role in establishing what is commonly referred to as the "Blue Note Sound." Not long after they first began appearing in the early 1950s, his recordings for that label, distin guished by their warmth, clarity, and sonic precision, set a new standard for the sound of small group jazz on record, a standard against which al most all subsequent efforts were measured.

  • 05 – Spinning the Record
IV. THE GOLDEN AGE Expanding horizons, shrinking the world It may come as a surprise for many to think of the era 1940-1956 as the Golden Age of art music recording. After all, throughout most of this period the primary sound carrier was still the 78-rpm record with all its limitations, not least of which was a narrow bandwidth and attendant surface noise, to say nothing of its short playing time and a breakability factor which became even worse after World War II. Yet from a musical standpoint, there was so much going on, most of it captured on discs for posterity, that one could have realistically lived their entire musical lives during this period and been extremely happy. At the beginning of this period, for instance, one could still hear the great idiosyncratic classical performers of the previous era, in person, on radio and/or on records, among them Mengelberg, Huberman, Schnabel, Kreisler, Furtwängler, Cortot and Thibaud; the great modern-style innovators such as Kipnis, McCormack, Schiøtz, Menuhin, Heifetz, Feuermann, Toscanini, Fritz Reiner, Szigeti, Gieseking and Rubinstein; and, at the other end of the era, such startlingly innovative musicians as Glenn Gould, Guido Cantelli, Maria Callas, Tito Gobbi, Elisabeth Schwarzkopf, Dietrich Fischer-Dieskau, Claudio Arrau, Gyorgy Cziffra, Dmitri Mitropoulos, Robert Craft, Dinu Lipatti, David Oistrakh, Charles Munch, Noah Greenberg and Ginette Neveu. Some- where or other in the world, you could hear Igor Stravinsky, Darius Milhaud, Richard Strauss, Francis Poulenc or Benjamin Britten performing their own music. As for the jazz and folk worlds, they were even more historical and exciting.

  • Lord Keep Me Day by Day”--The Caravans (1958) Added to the National Registry: 2021 Essay by Robert M
“Lord Keep Me Day By Day”--The Caravans (1958) Added to the National Registry: 2021 Essay by Robert M. Marovich (guest post)* Early label “Lord Keep Me Day By Day,” first recorded in 1958 by the Caravans, has become one of the best-known hymns in the African American gospel music canon. The Caravans formed in the late 1940s as background singers for Robert Anderson after he left the Roberta Martin Singers to pursue a solo career. Initially known as Robert Anderson’s Good Shepherd Singers, the Caravans hailed from Chicago and Northwest Indiana, and included Elyse Yancey, Irma Gwynn, Nellie Grace Daniels, Ora Lee Hopkins, and Betty Jones. From 1949 to 1952, the ladies backed Anderson on recordings for the Chicago-based independent labels Miracle, Premium, and United. When Gwynn left to raise a family, Anderson replaced her with Albertina Walker and changed the group’s name to the Gospel Caravan. Under circumstances that remain unclear, the Gospel Caravan parted ways with Anderson during an April 1952 recording session for Leonard Allen and Lew Simpkins’ United Records. With studio time left on the clock, the ladies--rechristened as the Caravans--cut two sides on their own. Allen and Simpkins released the single on United’s sister label, States. With tight harmonies and a demonstrative delivery honed from years of church singing, the Caravans amassed a fan base that soon surpassed Anderson’s. With Walker as manager and James Cleveland as accompanist, the Caravans traveled nationally as part of multi-group package tours. Their States singles, 14 in total between 1952 and 1956, were radio favorites.
