Rivers MBA, Brenau University, 1993 BS, University of Maryland, 1989 Dissertation Submitted in Partial Fulfillment of the Requirements for the Degree of Doctor of Philosophy Management Walden University November 2018 Abstract Corporations are finding it challenging to attract and retain the top talented Millennials. Their frequent job-hopping is costing the U.S. economy $30.5 billion annually despite corporations’ best efforts to retain them. The central research question concerns the decision-making process that Millennials use to decide whether to job-hop or stay with an organization. The purpose of this qualitative study was to develop a theory that explains the Millennials’ process for deciding whether to job-hop or stay with an organization. The conceptual framework for this grounded theory research is generational theory, Herzberg’s hygiene and motivational factors, and psychological contract theory. The data collection was by means of a purposive sampling strategy implemented through the semistructured interviews of 13 participants. The grounded theory data analysis method used consisted of an abridged version of Glaser’s data analysis method as developed by Charmaz, which entailed a systematic comparative coding process (initial, focused, and theoretical). The study findings included 7 factors that affect Millennial job-hopping: competitive compensation, job enjoyment, opportunities for professional growth, supportive work environment, reasonable free/flex time, finding their niche, and excellent benefits. Based on these factors, the Millennials job-hopping theory explains their decision-making process and why they job-hop. Positive social change may occur when Millennials achieve job satisfaction. Job satisfaction increases loyalty and organizational commitment and reduces stress, thus decreasing turnover and creating economic stability for the Millennials and their organizations. Harris 1 Thesis Summary A new generational wave has begun to enter the workforce. The oldest members of Generation Z, those approximately at the age of 25 and below, have recently begun their careers. In the past few years, some changes have been made to work environments, like constructing gyms and daycares at workplaces, expanding the options for work at home programs, and firms hosting social events to attract top, young talent. Some of these actions were to appease Generation Y (Millennials), but some, whether the intent was known or not, will be very pleasing and beneficial to Generation Z. However, Generation Y and Z have some key differences which can create new challenges for a firm’ managers and human resource departments. For example, Generation Z desires to complete their work in the correct way to please their managers, so exceptional training would be strongly recommended for Generation Z to be confident in their work.

    Rebecca Whiting (Birkbeck, University of London) Baby Boomers and the Lost Generation: On the discursive legitimacy of generations at work [email protected] We present a critical examination of generations within conversations about age at work, focusing on Baby Boomers and the Lost Generation. Whilst not pre-defining these groups, Baby Boomers are broadly seen as a group in mid / later life, the oldest of whom might be expected to be nearing retirement; the Lost Generation are seen as a group of young people unable to secure jobs during the economic downturn. We utilise an empirically innovative e-research approach to untangle ways in which understandings of generations are discursively legitimated via Web 2.0 media. Applying Vaara et al's (2006) notion of strategies of discursive legitimation, we unpack the legitimation of generations overall and these two generations in detail. We analyze how generational categories are constructed and deployed in debates regarding work entitlement and responsibility, found to be major tensions within the battle for discursive legitimacy of these groups. We explore the discursive strategies deployed as different voices seek to establish work entitlement whilst also assigning responsibility within conversations about age at work. For example, while moral justifications are used regarding both groups, the outcomes proposed are rather different. For Baby Boomers, the focus is on personal economic struggle with increased reliance on governmental support postulated. For the Lost Generation, broader societal damage (including social unrest) is forecast if the claim to entitlement is not satisfied. Similarly, responsibility for the issues associated with each generation is variously allocated.

The Great War had destroyed traditional models of heroism for twenties intellectuals such as Ernest Hemingway, Edmund Wilson, Malcolm Cowley, E. E. Cummings, Hart Crane, F. Scott Fitzgerald, and John Dos Passos, compelling them to create a new understanding of what I call the “heroic self.” Through a modernist, experience based, epistemology these writers deemed that the relationship between the heroic individual and the world consisted of a dialectical tension between irony and romance. The ironic interpretation, the view that the world is an antagonistic force out to suppress individual vitality, drove these intellectuals to adopt the Freudian conception of heroism as a revolt against social oppression.     Read-out of Regional Level No Lost Generation Donor Briefing on Adolescents and Youth1, 2018 The No Lost Generation initiative is a concerted effort by humanitarians, donors, governments and other partners to secure the safety and futures of a whole generation of children and young people in Syria, Iraq, Lebanon, Turkey, Jordan and Egypt whose safety, wellbeing, education and opportunities are jeopardized by conflict and displacement. The initiative comprises programming and advocacy under three pillars – Education, Child Protection and Adolescents & Youth – all of which are embedded in existing humanitarian plans. Overall, it is a powerful call, made together with children and young people, to invest in their rights, capacities, resilience, and potential – since these are the building blocks of a peaceful and prosperous future. On 26 September, 2018 the Embassy of the Kingdom of the Netherlands in Beirut hosted a regional level discussion under the auspices of the No Lost Generation (NLG) initiative on Adolescents and Youth in the Middle East and North Africa region (MENA). The event brought together young people affected by conflict, humanitarians, development experts and representatives of the international donor community, including: Australia, Canada, Denmark, EU, France, Germany, Italy Norway, Sweden, the UK and the US. Also present was a representative from the American University of Beirut Conveying the highlights of a regional level Evidence Symposium on Adolescents and Youth in MENA on 25 and 26 September, and organised by a regional UN:NGO group on adolescents & youth and the NLG partnership, the agenda of the Donor Briefing included presentations on the current evidence on and solutions for adolescents and youth in the region.

    When Generations Collide By Dennis Doverspike and Alison O’Malley I’m not tryin’ to cause a big sensation, I’m just talkin’ ‘bout My Generation (from The Who’s My Generation, written by Peter Townshend, copyright 1965 Fabulous Music) Acknowledgements of the existence of a “generation gap” (i.e. a difference in attitudes or values between generations) appear to be as old as oral history. Many Roman and Greek myths rely upon the concept of titanic struggles between parents and their children. In the United States during the 1960s, the concept of a generation gap was often used to explain a variety of intergenerational conflicts. So, the image of generations—as many as four possible generations—competing in the workplace in the 2000s is one that has attracted both popular and scientific interest. It has led to dramatic statements, which lead to accompanying vivid images of the generations colliding or clashing in a battle for dominance of the workplace. Dramatic imagery aside, the prevailing argument has been that managers in organizations, including human resource managers, must find ways to deal with this diversity of generational cultures. In theory, human resource managers and others can deal with this generational diversity by 1) understanding the differences between generations and then 2) crafting various strategies based upon the identified differences for responding to the needs and values of the different generations. Of course, this also means dealing with the conflicting demands of the generations. This article presents two competing theories regarding generational differences. The first theory, generational cultures, holds that historical events shape the unique culture of a generation.

  • The Millennial Generation: Common Experience Guiding Them Into
    2 Abstract The Millennial Generation, those born from 1980-2000, see the world from a different viewpoint. This distinctive cohort has structured their lives in a different manner than preceding generations. The introduction and influence of social, political, and technological changes over the past few decades have structured Millennials’ unique and sometimes unclear characteristics and behaviors. Dividing and defining people by their birth years can seem like a subjective generalization. However, Howe and Strauss (2000) argue that shared experiences during formative years within a cohort result in a distinctive generational bond resulting in common attitudes and behaviors. Millennials have been labeled as one of the most overprotected and enabled generations in history, and mentors are uncertain how to beneficially nurture this generation as they transition into adulthood (Lykins & Pace, 2013: Twenge et al.). Generations are shaped by the dynamic interplay of history and popular culture, which can form a lens for understanding a generation’s collective nature (Mannheim, 1928). To determine what the future holds for the Millennial Generation as they transition into adulthood, one should closely examine their formative experiences and construct a socio-psychological portrait (Ng, Schweitzer, & Lyons, 2010). By clarifying the process that formed their adulthood, we gain a clearer understanding of what it means to them to be an emerging adult in the Millennial generation. The purpose of this qualitative study was to explore the Millennial Generation’s perceptions of how their formative experiences have affected their transition into adulthood. It was my intention through this phenomenological study to view the Millennial Generation’s 3 common formative experiences through the lens of the Theory of Generations, Theory of the Emergent Adult, and the Gestalt Theory and link their unresolved familiarities to their current behaviors and mindset as they emerge into adulthood.

To provide insight to this inquiry and fill an existing gap in the academic and professional literature surrounding Generation Z, a qualitative, single-site case study research method and design was selected. Accordingly, the researcher conducted interviews containing semi-structured, open-ended questions based on the literature’s prevailing components of team dynamics and engagement with seven Generation Z project professionals and ten project professionals representing older generations who currently serve on teams with Generation Z members at a global technology organization located in the southeastern United States. Together these 17 project team professionals provided a holistic, insightful account of how this youngest generation of professionals is impacting intergenerational project team dynamics and is best motivated and engaged. Accordingly, participant interview responses revealed 11 salient themes that provided deeper understanding of the business problem guiding this inquiry. Findings are particularly applicable to the field of project management, which is heavily comprised of project teams working together to accomplish strategic deliverables for business organizations and their customers. Furthermore, these findings help provide insight to strategic business organizations and leaders to effectively develop this next generation of professionals as they increasingly represent their employee population.

Biographical criticism is the practice of analyzing a literary work through the lens of an author’s experience. In this lesson, explore the author’s life to understand the novel more fully. 1 Ernest Hemingway grew up in Oak Park, Illinois, one of six children. In Lesson One 1917, the year President Wilson declared war on Germany, Hemingway graduated from high school. Instead of going to college, he became a FOCUS: reporter for a small newspaper. As a journalist, Hemingway learned to write concisely, using active verbs and brief, clear paragraphs. Many young Biography men were entering the military, but Hemingway’s vision did not meet military standards. Instead, he applied to the Red Cross as an ambulance driver and, in 1918, found himself in France and then in Italy.
