Refuse/Garbage Collection and Recycling

The wheelie bins for general refuse/garbage and recyclables are round the back of the apartment, next to the car parking bay.

Since the introduction of kerbside recycling the council will no longer empty a refuse bin that contains any cardboard, paper, plastic bottles, food tins or drink cans. So please place these in the blue bin and all other waste in the green one.

At present the council does not collect glass bottles and jars for recycling but, if you wish, you can take these to the recycling centre in Retail Park.

12

Cleaning Supplies, Spare Light Bulbs and Reusable Shopping Bags

Should you need either cleaning supplies or replacement light bulbs, you will find them in the first-floor cupboard at the bottom of the stairs. Feel free to borrow the reusable shopping bags that are hanging on the door.

Fuse Box

Very rarely, if there is an electrical surge, the power to an area shuts down. The electrical panels are low down on the left-hand side of the first-floor cupboard at the bottom of the stairs. Have a look at it to see which breaker has tripped to the “off” position. You can then flip the breaker to the "on" position and power will resume again.

13

Checkout

Please check out by 10:00 am so that the cleaner has plenty of time to prepare the apartment for the next guests. It would help her if you could do the following:

• Take all your refuse out to the wheelie bins located round the back of the apartment next to the car parking bay

• Place all used towels and bed linen in piles on the floor (you can leave the beds unmade)

• Load all your dirty dishes, cups and utensils in the dishwasher and turn it on

Please don’t forget to return one set of keys to the key guard security box as you leave and hang the others on the key rack inside the front door.

Thank you very much. We hope you enjoyed your stay and will visit us again in the future.

DORNOCH LINKS AND EMBO CIRCULAR WALK

8.5 km (5.3 miles)

1. Leaving the front door, turn right and walk north along Bridge Street. Just before you reach the old railway station on your left, cross the road to the right and follow some steps through the wood signed for Embo. Keep left and you will skirt round a house and up through the woods. At a kissing gate cross the road and follow the path through a second gate onto another woodland path. Follow the broad path and turn left then right at signs for Embo via Earl's Cross.

2. The path follows the edge of a field for a short distance and then enters an area of gorse. At the fork keep straight ahead. Soon you will reach a stone grave. This marks the resting place of a man who was brought to Dornoch for burial at a time when plague was sweeping the nation. His body was refused entry and he was buried on this spot. Although harsh, this policy may have kept Dornoch free of cholera in 1832, a year when thousands died throughout Britain.

3. A little further on turn left at a fork following the yellow arrow sign. Soon you reach Earl's Cross. This is a large boundary stone which features the shields of the Earl of and the Bishop of Caithness who controlled the lands to the north and south respectively. Keep following the path to the left, do not head towards the sea and the path nearer to the golf course. Soon you reach the route of the old railway line. Continue northwards until you reach a white house. Here turn sharp right behind the house and walk along a stony track with the golf course on your right hand side.

23

4. When a gate blocks the track, cross the wooden stile and descend the track to the golf course with the caravan park and pier at Embo in view. At the end of the golf course go through the metal gate and then the wooden gate to follow a narrow grassy path towards Embo. Follow this path all the way to the caravan park where you can cross the stream before turning immediately right to continue on the shore path to the pier.

5. You can either return to the edge of the golf course by the same route or follow the sand, crossing the stream on stepping stones. The path follows the edge of the golf course and is marked by red posts. Keep to the left on a grassy path when the main track crosses the centre of the course. The route soon returns to a track and you follow this to the southern end of the golf course. Fork left at a junction and pass round the back of one of the tees. Keeping near the coast all the time. Go up to the car park and lifeboat station at the end of the course. The walk can be extended to Dornoch Point from here by going down the steps to the beach and continuing in the same direction. The route is picked up by crossing the stream as it flows over the beach. Otherwise, follow the road, continue past the clubhouse, and turn right at the T-junction to return to Dornoch Square and the apartment.
