While the overall inclusiveness has now been mostly agreed on and 20 families recognised, the phylogenetic relationships among the families are largely unknown. We here present a phylogenetic hypothesis for Sylvioidea based on one mitochondrial and six nuclear markers, in total ~6.3 kbp, for 79 ingroup species representing all currently recognised families and some species with uncertain affinities, making this the most comprehensive analysis of this taxon. Results: The resolution, especially of the deeper nodes, is much improved compared to previous studies. However, many relationships among families remain uncertain and are in need of verification. Most families themselves are very well supported based on the total data set and also by indels. Our data do not support the inclusion of Hylia in Cettiidae, but do not strongly reject a close relationship with Cettiidae either. The genera Scotocerca and Erythrocercus are closely related to Cettiidae, but separated by relatively long internodes. The families Paridae, Remizidae and Stenostiridae clustered among the outgroup taxa and not within Sylvioidea. Conclusions: Although the phylogenetic position of Hylia is uncertain, we tentatively support the recognition of the family Hyliidae Bannerman, 1923 for this genus and Pholidornis. We propose new family names for the genera Scotocerca and Erythrocercus, Scotocercidae and Erythrocercidae, respectively, rather than including these in Cettiidae, and we formally propose the name Macrosphenidae, which has been in informal use for some time. -

Babblers, family Timaliidae, have long been subject to debate on systematic position, family limits and internal taxonomy. In this study, we use five molecular regions to estimate the relationships among a large proportion of genera traditionally placed in Timaliidae. We find good support for five main clades within this radiation, and propose a new classification, dividing the babblers into the families Sylviidae and Timaliidae. Within the latter family, four subfamilies are recognized: Zosteropinae, Timaliinae, Pellorneinae and Leiothrichinae. Several taxa, previously not studied with molecular data, are phylogenetically placed within Sylviidae or Timaliidae. This is, however, not the case for the genus Pnoepyga, for which we propose the family name Pnoepygidae fam. n. Canary Islands Trip Report Macaronesian Endemics 16th to 22nd April 2016 Houbara Bustard by David Hoddinott Trip Report Compiled by Tour Leader David Hoddinott RBT Canary Islands Trip Report April 216 2 Trip Summary We started our trip in Madrid where we arrived in the late afternoon, settled into a comfortable hotel and then, over a delicious dinner, chatted about the adventures to come on the Canary Islands. The following morning we took a flight to the arid island of Fuerteventura, situated in the eastern Canary Islands group in the Atlantic Ocean, just off Morocco. On arrival, we checked in at our comfortable hotel and then set about enjoying some birding around the nearby Los Molinos Reservoir. Here we notched up a good selection of species including some key targets. Notable sightings included good numbers of Ruddy Shelduck, Common Buzzard, Egyptian Vulture, Little Ringed Plover, Eurasian Hoopoe, Common Kestrel, Northern Raven, Lesser Short-toed Lark, Spectacled Warbler and Trumpeter Finch. Both Canary Islands Stonechat, which is endemic to Fuerteventura, and Berthelot’s Pipit, a Macaronesian endemic, gave Trumpeter Finch by David Hoddinott splendid views and so we returned to the hotel chuffed with our afternoon’s birding and excited in anticipation of the birding the following day. The following morning we departed early for the drive to the area around La Oliva in search of the most sought after bird of the trip. What else but the great Houbara Bustard! It’s not endemic to the islands, however the Canary Islands are certainly the best place in the world to see this impressive bird.
