JUL 26 Godfathers of Latin Jazz: A Salute to Dizzy Gillespie and Chano Pozo In 1947 jazz master Dizzy Gillespie invited Cuban conguero Chano Pozo to participate in the Carnegie Hall concert (and subsequent European tour) that launched the modern Latin Jazz movement worldwide. Our program celebrates that key collaboration and features some of today’s most exciting jazz musicians.

AUG 9 “Bird” on the Bay: A Charlie Parker Tribute Featuring Charles McPherson Charlie “Bird” Parker, THE innovator of bebop, speaks to all jazz musicians and music aficionados. His pioneering explorations on alto saxophone, playing complex lines over challenging harmonies, resonate to this day. Our special guest for this tribute is modern sax master Charles McPherson, famous for his work with Clint Eastwood on the Parker biopic, Bird.

* AUG 12 Pablo Montero From former Mexican teen idol to telenovela actor and composer, Pablo Montero has had an active and dramatic career in the public spotlight for over two decades. Now he brings his macho charm and smooth vocal delivery to Bayside Summer Nights, accompanied by a mariachi ensemble.

* AUG 19 Robert Randolph and the Family Band Named one of the 100 Greatest Guitarists of All Time by Rolling Stone, Robert Randolph is today an inspiration to the likes of Eric Clapton, Carlos Santana and Derek Trucks. Randolph, whose church upheld a long but little known gospel music tradition called sacred steel, formed the Family Band in the early 2000s after applying his dazzling steel guitar technique to secular music.

The San Diego Symphony is working with the Port of San Diego for the development of a permanent, highly innovative outdoor space called Bayside Performance Park. This significant park improvement project will allow the Symphony to enhance our musical presentations and the visitor experience with an architecturally remarkable and acoustically superior stage, allow the park to become an important public resource as a viable site for a wider range of performances and activate it year-round as a public gathering space and a landmark waterfront attraction. With Port and Coastal Commission approval, the Symphony will present the Bayside Performance Park as a gift to the region.

Our vision is to create a permanent outdoor venue with superb acoustics that is aesthetically stunning — a postcard for San Diego — that not only provides vibrant programming for a wide range of audiences, but also creates a world-class park that can be enjoyed by everyone in our community.
