A case of impersonation, criminal trespass and criminal conspiracy under sections 419, 447, 448, 505 and 120(B) has been registered against the accused, Balbir Singh Rajput. Singh had entered the Parliament last Friday through the same gate as the terrorists on December 13, 2001. Several security personnel and even MPs reportedly took him for Sinha. He had reportedly been commissioned by a television news channel to carry out an ‘inves- tigation’ on Parliament security. The name of the news channel also figures in the FIR. Singh, a native of Amritsar, but currently based in Mumbai, had reportedly been residing at Hotel Anmol in Paharganj. The New Delhi district police had rounded up the man for questioning on Saturday.

TNN text of the trade ministers’ meeting to be held in Cancun from September 10 to 14. The party welcomed the process of wide- ranging consultations with stakeholders and political parties initiated by com- merce and industry minister Arun Jaitley in the run-up to the conference. BJP president Venkaiah Naidu and par- ty functionaries Balbir Punj, Tarun Vijay, J P Gupta, Gopal Aggarwal and Jagdish Shettigar had a meeting with Jaitley here in which Naidu said: ‘‘We go to Cancun as a nation and not as a political party or a group...The issue in WTO is one of nation- al interest. It is not a political matter.’’ The BJP paper presented to the minister contained, among others, the following suggestions: ● Emphasis should be on translating the spirit of the Doha meeting ● Concerns of public health in the con- text of the trade-related intellectual prop- erty rights (TRIPs) agreement of the WTO should be addressed. ● Attempts by the developed countries to push additional agenda items such as multilateral agreement on investment, competition policy, transparency in gov- ernment procurement, trade facilitation and labour standards should be resisted. ● The government should not repeat the mistakes made in respect of national in- terests. Member-countries should be re- minded that WTO has been set up to facili- tate trade. Linking issues such as invest- ment, labour standards and environment with trade would amount to interference in the member-country’s sovereign rights to formulate domestic policies. ● India should demand free mobility for people as service providers as a tactical strategy to resist inclusion of any new items on WTO agenda. Jaitley emphasised that interest of the farmers would be of paramount impor- tance given that India has the world’s largest proportion of population depend- ent on agriculture. India rejects farm trade proposals

TIMES NEWS NETWORK New Delhi: India has rejected the lat- est farm trade proposals presented by the European Union and the US at the ongoing WTO negotiations. ‘‘The pro- posals are not acceptable to India,’’ commerce and industry minister Arun Jaitley said here on Thursday. India will be presenting its detailed reaction to the latest EU-US farm trade proposals to the WTO in Geneva later on Thursday. The two world trade majors, which were earlier divided over the issues of cutting domestic and export subsidies and lowering tariffs on farm goods, re- portedly reached a compromise agree- ment on Tuesday. Under the EU-US agreement, export and domestic subsidies that the two major trading entities provide to their farmers would not be cut substantial- ly, but there will be deep across the board reduction in farm tariffs. 2 weeks left for CAS, and none of the players happy TIMES NEWS NETWORK New Delhi: With barely a fortnight to go for the launch of CAS, the ground reality,as it emerged at a high-powered review meeting on Thursday, appeared far from satisfacto- ry for everyone. The broadcasters stuck to the old rates of pay channels, while the government, un- able to enforce any rates, vir- tually left the process to the market forces. However, the government did stick to its stipulation of Rs 72 notified for the basic tier of free-to-air channels, rejecting the objections of a section of cable operators. A review would be undertaken only next year, sources said. The broadcasters contin- ued to quote their old a la carte rates at the meeting chaired by Vijay Singh, addi- tional secretary in the infor- mation and broadcasting ministry. Accordingly, five popular channels — Sony, Star Plus, Zee, ESPN and Star Sports — and the free-to- air channels would be avail- able for around Rs 250. Singh said once the CAS regime rolls out zone-wise in the four metros, ‘‘it would be around what it is at present. If a consumer chooses fewer pay channels, he may have to shell out less than now’’. Eighteen months after the communal riots in Gujarat, plans are afoot to welcome Modi with pickets and plac- ards bearing the legend ‘‘Butcher of Gujarat’’. But interestingly, one of Modi’s former opponents, a Britain-based Muslim busi- nessman from Ahmedabad, who led last year’s legal cam- paign against him, now be- lieves it is time to ‘‘join the bandwagon’’. That bandwagon includes Modi’s lucrative plans to hawk September’s Navratri festival to the prosperous and homesick non-resident Gu- jarati community. The demonstrators, preparing to converge on Modi’s main speech venue from across the UK, will include families of British Gujarati Muslims caught up in last year’s riots, said Amrit Wilson, whose umbrella organisation South Asia Solidarity Group is spearheading the campaign.
