  • Virtual Spirituality: the Negotiation and (Re)-Presentation of Psychic-Spiritual Identity on the Internet
Virtual Spirituality: The Negotiation and (Re)-Presentation of Psychic-Spiritual Identity on the Internet Tamlyn Ryan Submitted for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy September 2012 Department of Sociology University of York Abstract This research is an examination of how people engaged in psychic and spiritual interests use the internet to participate as a group through social media. Exploring how individuals take advantage of the opportunities afforded by the internet to pursue their interest in psychic spirituality reveals different ways of participating and interacting online. The ways in which individuals present their psychic-spiritual selves online, how they negotiate their online identities and make sense of their culture, is also examined. Using an eclectic methodological approach, this research used a combination of ethnographic methods and autoethnography to explore online psychic-spiritual culture. Documentary analysis of website text and images, together with participant observation, both covert and overt, were used to examine websites. Facebook interaction and psychic readings in online discussion board forums based on psychic-spiritual interests were analysed using discourse analysis. Autoethnographic self-reflections were also collected and analysed in order to capture an intrapsychic perspective of psychic reading culture. It was found that psychic practitioners use their websites to communicate the message that they are credible psychic readers whilst Facebook was found to be a site in which, through a delicate interplay of activity and performance, identity is constructed through interaction between the psychic reader and their Facebook friends. Psychic-spiritual discussion board forums meanwhile are sites of situated learning in which learner psychic readers learn to become appropriate members of the psychic- spiritual milieu.

© 2019 AIPR, Inc. Australian Journal of Parapsychology ISSN: 1445-2308 Volume 19, Number 1, pp. 5-43 “Meme-Spirited”: II. Illustrating the VAPUS Model for Ghost Narratives SHARON A. HILL ,BRIAN LAYTHE ,NEIL DAGNALL ,KENNETH DRINKWATER ,CIARÁN O’K EEFFE ,ANNALISA VENTOLA , &JAMES HOURAN Abstract: We continue our integrative review of nearly 20 years of sociocultural research and popular trends on ghosts, haunted houses, and poltergeists (collectively termed “ghostly episodes”) that commenced in Part I (Hill, O’Keeffe, Laythe, Dagnall, Drinkwater, Ventola, & Houran, 2018). That analysis characterized the powerful brand personality of ghost narratives in terms of their Versatility, Adaptability, Participatory nature, Universality, and Scalability. This VAPUS model emphasizes that these narratives serve as cultural memes which, in part, reflect interpersonal or group dynamics. We illustrate these themes via three analyses that explore the role of the media, the use of technology to legitimatize amateur organizations, and the resulting conflict between popularized ghost-hunting groups, skeptic organizations, and parapsychology. Optimistically, we expect the VAPUS model can guide the development of new means or methods that aim to delineate and even bridge some of the competing social forces that shape or sustain these narratives in the popular culture and thereby constructively advance research in this domain. Keywords: branding, engagement, ghost, haunt, media, meme, popular culture. INTRODUCTION Part I of this two-part article (Hill et al., 2018) explored how ghosts, haunted houses, and poltergeist-like disturbances (collectively denoted here as ghostly episodes )—as anomalous experiences and cultural narratives— are particularly appealing, meaningful, and enduring due to their capacity to foster emotional and rational engagement across diverse demographic populations, as well as their capability to promote social interaction.

NÍngkoandi kuma yerta." l directions Analysing the various mythologies that inform Australian understandings of Aboriginal people, Marcia Langton concludes that what is revealed is not by and large a relationship between actual people but a relationship between white Australians and the symbols created by their predecessors: "Australians do not know and relate to Aboriginal people. They relate to stories told by former colonists" (Langton, 1993: 31). This thesis concentrates upon this relationship of non-Aboriginal people (especially white Australians) to the symbols and narratives they use to produce what is called Aboriginality. lt is a study of popular or broadly circulating representations of Australian Aboriginality. lt does not concentrate to any significant extent upon representations produced by Aboriginal people themselves: lt is important to recognise that the Aboriginality that is the subject of this thesis is an object largely independent of the cultural expressions and identity formations of Aboriginal people themselves.

FRENCH Ironically, British psychics didn’t see it coming. They have recently been on the receiving end of a veritable storm of negative publicity following allegations that Sally Morgan, who describes her- self on her website as “Britain’s best- loved psychic,” may have been caught using a fraudulent technique to con- vince her audiences of her mediumistic ability. The allegations began September 12, 2011, when a caller named Sue phoned into the Liveline show on RTÉ Radio 1, an Irish radio station. Sue reported that the previous evening she had been to see Morgan in action at the Grand Canal Theatre in Dublin. She had been seated at the back of the theater on the fourth floor and had initially been im- pressed by the psychic’s performance. However, as the second half of the show started, Sue became aware of a man’s voice coming from an open window just behind her, from a small room (“like a projection room”). She realized that m o c whatever the male voice said, Morgan s w e N / repeated on stage about ten seconds t o h s later. Exploring modern Spiritualism’s theological framework, pointing to its communal belief structure, practices and Seven-Principle doctrine this research articulates its position within society today, exploring notions of re-enchantment where the contemporary individual has become disconnected from formal religious institutions but still possesses a yearning for spiritual nourishment. During early forms of Spiriualism a first-person genuine experience was fundamental to the way in which the spectators framed meaning around what they were viewing. The loss of first person aspect provides a fundamental stance from which to interrogate the shifts that have occurred to Spiritualism as a result of its contemporary representations. Critically the study examines the representation of Spiritualism within the

  • Nature Imagery and the Depiction of Conscious- Ness in Australian Novels of the 20Th Century
Susanne Braun-Bau Nature and Psyche: nature imagery and the depiction of conscious- ness in Australian novels of the 20th century Australia has from the beginning of its short history meant more to its inhabitants than mere en- vironment and mere land to be occupied, ploughed and brought into subjection. It has been the outer equivalent of an inner reality; first, and persistently, the reality of exile; second, though perhaps we now tend to forget this, the sense of newness and freedom.1 With this statement the poet Judith Wright has highlighted the dual imagery of Australia as Arcady (newness, freedom) in contrast to Australia as Botany Bay (exile). These two percep- tions of landscape have been investigated by philosophers, psychologists, Romantic poets and art critics. Attitudes, intentions and social values are of major importance in understanding these psychological phenomena as well as the development of nature depiction in Australian novels. In the New World one is confronted with the special problem that strategies of per- ception which had been developed in the British context had to be transferred to a foreign environment. Therefore, the problem of distorted nature perceptions and the search for ade- quate ways of observation are dealt with in numerous novels. Mental processes are filters which intervene in the literary presentation of nature. This article will take you on a journey through literary landscapes, starting from Joseph Furphy and end- ing with Gerald Murnane. It will try to show the development of Australian literary landscape depiction. The investigation of this extensive topic will show that the perception of the Aus- tralian landscape as foreign and threatening is a coded expression of the protagonists’ crisis of identity due to their estrangement from European cultural roots.
