It’s Rock ‘n Roll at Charterhouse Auction Charterhouse have been instructed to sell an important collection of personal rock „n roll memorabilia relating to the Beatles, The Who, Paul McCartney and Wings in their two day auction of collectors‟ items on Thursday 16th & Friday 17th December. “The collection, estimated at over £20,000, has been formed by Howie and Sheila Casey from the 1960‟s onwards.” Commented Richard Bromell. “Both Howie and Sheila have been professional musicians for more years than they care to remember, and have decided that now is the right time to pass the collection over to a new generation of enthusiasts.” Howie Casey started his music career in the 1950‟s and formed his first band, Howie Casey and the Seniors in Liverpool in 1960 which featured Freddie Star on vocals. Howie then went on to play with Cliff Richard, Chuck Berry, The Who, Mott the Hoople, Wings and ABC. Sheila and her sister Jeanette, formed The McKinley Sisters in the early 1960‟s and toured with The Beatles in 1964 which is when she was given a full set of Beatles autographs worth thousands of pounds today. Included in the sale are personal items including photographs of Howie and Paul McCartney, a postcard from the McCartney‟s, play lists for Wings, promotional records, back stage passes, clothing and other items. Take It Away (promotional film) The filming of the promotional video for 'Take It Away' took place at EMI's Elstree Studios in Boreham Wood and was directed by John MacKenzie. Six hundred members of the Wings Fun Club were invited along as a live audience to the filming, which took place on Wednesday 23 June 1982. The band comprised Paul on bass, Eric Stewart on lead, George Martin on electric piano, Ringo and Steve Gadd on drums, Linda on tambourine and the horn section from the Q Tips. In between the various takes of 'Take It Away' Paul and his band played several numbers to entertain the audience, including 'Lucille', 'Bo Diddley', 'Peggy Sue', 'Send Me Some Lovin", 'Twenty Flight Rock', 'Cut Across Shorty', 'Reeling And Rocking', 'Searching' and 'Hallelujah I Love Her So'. The promotional film made its debut on Top Of The Pops on Thursday 15 July 1982. This song was “stuck together” from three different, unfinished compositions. This included a laundry list of John’s opinions on his lost beliefs (namely people and philosophies). Review: The Beatles Anthology [Original version published in German in the Badische Zeitung, 4 November 2000] For more than thirty-five years, the Beatles have credited their musical success to the long hours they spent playing in Hamburg, before they were discovered by Brian Epstein and then the rest of the world. Now it’s the official story: The Beatles Anthology (367 pp. Chronicle Books $60), the group’s collective ‘autobiography’ published October 5th, describes how their musical apprenticeship served on the Reeperbahn produced the sound that defined the 1960s and, arguably, popular music ever since. Told through the words of surviving band members Paul McCartney, George Harrison, and Ringo Starr, supplemented by extensive culling of old interviews with John Lennon, the history of the band is recounted from its beginnings as the Quarrymen in 1957 to the final acrimonious breakup in 1970. Like the television series and CD-sets to which it is a companion, Anthology is meant to be a picture of their life as a band from the inside—what it was like “in the eye of the hurricane,” as McCartney puts it. To hear the Beatles tell it, the seven-hour sets in Hamburg under pressure to “make a show” and bring in customers transformed their music, so much so that when they returned to England after their first stint in Hamburg, the world had its first taste of Beatlemania. Billed as “The Beatles—Direct from Hamburg!”, when they began playing in the Litherland Town Hall in Liverpool (27 December 1960), for the first time the crowd spontaneously rushed the stage in the frenzy that would become familiar in the succeeding years.
