This study examines the relationship among urbanization, land use/land cover dynamics and multiple hazard and risk analysis of the Pokhara valley from 1990 to 2013. We investigate some of the active hazards, such as floods, landslides, fire, sinkholes, land subsidence and earthquakes, and prepare an integrated multiple hazard risk map indicating the highly vulnerable zones.

    © Economic Literature, Vol. XII (26-38), December 2014 Out of Place: Abandoned Children in Predicaments amid Alterations Prakash Upadhyay, PhD ABSTRACT The major argument of this article is that amid the rhetoric of inclusion of caste/ethnic/regional groups in the national mainstream, street children known as vagrant kids are the victims of exclusion. In a new situation on the streets, Vagrant kids are the vagabond. However, abandoning the home and adjusting to the streets is a multifarious process. The forming of the vagrant kids is a complex itinerary actions embedded with the age, sex, and ethnicities/caste, place of origin, family economy, family roles and responsibilities. Among the multiple factors, family dysfunctions and company with street boys are the raison d'être for the emergence of street children culture. In a transformed situation on street, kids’ lives have a momentous relationship to the street as a space and a new sub-culture in a new situation. Ltd., Kathmandu, Nepal *Corresponding Email: [email protected] ABSTRACT The immense increase of the structural activity which decreases the pervious area of the city is alarming danger situation pertaining to drainage. Urbanization and improved area of imperviousness are the major contributors that make the existing drainage network insufficient while inadequate maintenance and haphazardly throwing rubbish on the road and drain are other issues. The major objective of the study is to analyze the hydrological and hydraulic status of the urban storm water drainage system of the major area of Pokhara City of Nepal and to compare the calculated result with existing situation, using Rehm tools HYKAS and GraPS under AutoCAD environment. The results of this study show that the size of the existing road side drains is inadequate to handle all the surface runoff. It is found that the existing situation of the drainage system is quite poor and need to be redesign or reconstruct immediately. The hydraulic load of almost all the conduit is beyond the limit assigned. The hydraulic design of the most of the drainage conduit is inadequate and re-design of the drain is essential based upon accurate flow estimation methods. This study concludes that the applicability of the current drainage system is quite poor and needs to make certain changes with their construction immediately in order to avoid any danger and adverse effect possessed by surface flooding over the road surface and other paved surfaces.

    Pokhara Sub-Metropolitan City (Nepali: पोखरा उप-महानगरपाि줿का Pokhara Upa- Mahanagarpalika) is the second[1] largest city of Nepal with 264,991[2] inhabitants and is situated about 200 km west of the capital Kathmandu.[3] It serves as the headquarters of Kaski District, Gandaki Zone and the Western Development Region.[4] Pokhara is one of the most popular tourist destinations in Nepal.[5] Three out of the ten highest mountains in the world — Dhaulagiri, Annapurna I and Manaslu — are situated within 30 miles (linear distance) of the city, so that the northern skyline of the city offers a very close view of the Himalayas.[6] Due to its proximity to the Annapurna mountain range, the city is also a base for trekkers undertaking the Annapurna Circuit through the ACAP region[7] of the Annapurna ranges in the Himalayas. Pokhara is situated in the northwestern corner of the Pokhara Valley,[8] which is a widening of the Seti Gandaki valley that lies in the midland region (Pahad) of the Himalayas. In this region the mountains rise very quickly[9] and within 30 km, the elevation rises from 1,000 m to over 7,500 m. As a result of this sharp rise in altitude the area of Pokhara has one of the highest precipitation rates in the country (3,350 mm/year or 131 inches/year in the valley to 5600 mm/year or 222 inches/year in Lumle).[10] Even within the city there is a noticeable difference in rainfall between the south and the north of the city, the northern part of the city situated at the foothills of the mountains experiences proportionally higher amount of precipitation.
