ULEB Press Release Tomas Van Den Spiegel re-elected as ULEB President At yesterday’s ULEB General Assembly current President Tomas Van Den Spiegel was re- elected for the 2020-2024 term. Tomas Van Den Spiegel: “I am happy to be re-elected and thank all member leagues for their confidence. I am looking forward to representing each one of them again for the coming 4 years. It is important to me to maintain the current momentum and togetherness that we have established between all members during my first term. This has culminated amongst others in the competition complaint that was recently filed to the European Commission versus Euroleague. Next to protecting the European sports model, it is essential that we as domestic leagues stand our ground and protect national league basketball in general. Furthermore I will look to build on the improved international relations that have allowed ULEB to be actively involved in discussions and decision making on a number of levels, always looking to protect our members’ interests. As for the future of ULEB we are aiming to optimize the internal functioning of the organization with the installment of a strategic committee that will be exploring ULEB expansion and partnership development amongst other things.” About ULEB: ULEB, the association of the European Basketball Leagues, was founded in 1992 and aims to develop and to defend the rights of the European domestic leagues and their clubs. • Renormalizing Individual Performance Metrics for Cultural Heritage Management of Sports Records
Renormalizing individual performance metrics for cultural heritage management of sports records Alexander M. Petersen1 and Orion Penner2 1Management of Complex Systems Department, Ernest and Julio Gallo Management Program, School of Engineering, University of California, Merced, CA 95343 2Chair of Innovation and Intellectual Property Policy, College of Management of Technology, Ecole Polytechnique Federale de Lausanne, Lausanne, Switzerland. (Dated: April 21, 2020) Individual performance metrics are commonly used to compare players from different eras. However, such cross-era comparison is often biased due to significant changes in success factors underlying player achievement rates (e.g. performance enhancing drugs and modern training regimens). Such historical comparison is more than fodder for casual discussion among sports fans, as it is also an issue of critical importance to the multi- billion dollar professional sport industry and the institutions (e.g. Hall of Fame) charged with preserving sports history and the legacy of outstanding players and achievements. To address this cultural heritage management issue, we report an objective statistical method for renormalizing career achievement metrics, one that is par- ticularly tailored for common seasonal performance metrics, which are often aggregated into summary career metrics – despite the fact that many player careers span different eras. Remarkably, we find that the method applied to comprehensive Major League Baseball and National Basketball Association player data preserves the overall functional form of the distribution of career achievement, both at the season and career level. As such, subsequent re-ranking of the top-50 all-time records in MLB and the NBA using renormalized metrics indicates reordering at the local rank level, as opposed to bulk reordering by era.

  • Avoid Relaxing FIBA
coaches - fundamentals and youth basketball Avoid relaxing by Aíto García Reneses on the court by Sito Alonso Aíto García Reneses was head coach (and also general manager) of Barcelona (Spain) for many years, where his teams won three Division I championships, three Spanish Cups, one King's Cup, two FIBA Europe, and two Korac Cups. He has been head coach of Badalona (Spain) since 2003, where he won one FIBA Europe (2006), one King's Cup (2008) and ULEB Cup (2008). He also was awarded Coach of the Year of the ULEB Cup 2007-08. Sito Alonso started his coaching career in 1987 with the youth teams of Zaragoza (Spain); then he was responsible for youth teams at Monzòn, where he also was head coach of the first team (EBA league) from 1999 to 2004. He has been assistant coach of Badalona since 2006, where his teams won FIBA Europe (2006), King's Cup (2008), and the ULEB Cup (2008). Twenty years ago, many people criticized player rotations. The possible explanation was that people were not used to seeing rotations on the court and they thought that many advantages were lost, such as the possibility of giving the most minutes to the five best players on the team. Currently, however, all good (and even the not-so-good) teams use rotations. The most important advantage of this is that teams can play at the highest athletic lev- els. When a player is fatigued, he can re- couperate and recover his energy on the bench and not on the court. That said, players still relax on the court.
