Automatic Movie Analysis and Summarisation Philip John Gorinski I V N E R U S E I T H Y T O H F G E R D I N B U Doctor of Philosophy Institute for Language, Cognition and Computation School of Informatics University of Edinburgh 2017 Abstract Automatic movie analysis is the task of employing Machine Learning methods to the field of screenplays, movie scripts, and motion pictures to facilitate or enable vari- ous tasks throughout the entirety of a movie’s life-cycle. From helping with making informed decisions about a new movie script with respect to aspects such as its origi- nality, similarity to other movies, or even commercial viability, all the way to offering consumers new and interesting ways of viewing the final movie, many stages in the life-cycle of a movie stand to benefit from Machine Learning techniques that promise to reduce human effort, time, or both. -
Ronald Davis Oral History Collection on the Performing Arts
Oral History Collection on the Performing Arts in America Southern Methodist University The Southern Methodist University Oral History Program was begun in 1972 and is part of the University’s DeGolyer Institute for American Studies. The goal is to gather primary source material for future writers and cultural historians on all branches of the performing arts- opera, ballet, the concert stage, theatre, films, radio, television, burlesque, vaudeville, popular music, jazz, the circus, and miscellaneous amateur and local productions. The Collection is particularly strong, however, in the areas of motion pictures and popular music and includes interviews with celebrated performers as well as a wide variety of behind-the-scenes personnel, several of whom are now deceased. Most interviews are biographical in nature although some are focused exclusively on a single topic of historical importance. The Program aims at balancing national developments with examples from local history. Interviews with members of the Dallas Little Theatre, therefore, serve to illustrate a nation-wide movement, while film exhibition across the country is exemplified by the Interstate Theater Circuit of Texas. The interviews have all been conducted by trained historians, who attempt to view artistic achievements against a broad social and cultural backdrop. Many of the persons interviewed, because of educational limitations or various extenuating circumstances, would never write down their experiences, and therefore valuable information on our nation’s cultural heritage would be lost if it were not for the S.M.U. Oral History Program. Interviewees are selected on the strength of (1) their contribution to the performing arts in America, (2) their unique position in a given art form, and (3) availability. -

The American People and the New Deal Michael Kazin *
Federal History 2009 Kazin The American People and the New Deal michael kazin * In 1941, director Frank Capra and scriptwriter Robert Riskin, a passionate New Dealer, created Meet John Doe, an allegory of a failed fascist takeover of the United States. The film concludes with perhaps the purest expression of populist defiance ever seen on screen. A group of “ordinary Americans”—members of the John Doe Clubs—has just convinced their hero, played by Gary Cooper, not to commit suicide. Their unofficial spokesman, a tough newspaper reporter, turns to the would-be Mussolini—a wealthy publisher named D. B. Norton—and declares: “There you are, Norton! The people! Try and lick that!” Meet John Doe reflects a cultural shift that owes a good deal to Barbara Stanwyck and Gary Cooper FDR and the New Deal—and to the people and movements that in Meet John Doe, 1941. thrived in their shadow during the 1930s and early 1940s. The idea that Americans constituted a united or nearly united “people” who came together across religious and ethnic boundaries, and that this people formed a bulwark of opposition to eco - nomic elites who threatened democracy, was essential to the building of the New Deal coalition. Of course, there’s seldom, if ever, a clear cause-and-effect relationship between culture and politics. Cultures change more slowly and in different ways than do political parties and electoral majorities. And the conventional wisdom that groups that have “conservative val - ues” tend to vote for conservative politicians has little basis in U.S. history. For example, it wasn’t until the 1980s that regular churchgoers began to vote more for Republican candi - dates than Democratic ones. -
Frank Capra and the Image of the Journalist in American Films
Frank Capra and the Image of the Journalist in American Films http://ijpc.org/Capra%20speech.htm Frank Capra and the Image of the Journalist in American Film Remarks at USC Literary Luncheon, March 27, 2002, Doheny Memorial Library, by Joe Saltzman Frank Capra was one of the most popular American directors in film history. So it may not be surprising that Capra and his writers were responsible for much of what Americans thought they knew about their journalists in the twentieth century. Americans’ perceptions of journalism and journalists were indelibly imprinted on the national psyche through the popular Capra films, which brought reporters, columnists, editors and media tycoons to flesh-and-blood life from the late 1920s through the 1930s and 1940s and into the early 1950s. No one synthesized the images of the journalist found in other films, novels and Broadway plays better than Frank Capra and his writers. Capra’s familiar images still focus our thinking today — whether they be the energetic, opportunistic reporter who would do anything for a scoop; or the tough, sarcastic sob sister trying desperately to outdo her male competition; or the cynical big-city newspaper editor committed to getting the story first even if it means strangling his reporters to do it; or the morally bankrupt, ruthless publisher who uses the power of the press for his or her own ends. These images of the journalist, complete with every cliché of the newspaper world, originated in hundreds of novels and silent films in the early years of the twentieth century. They were polished up, honed, and presented to the public in unforgettable ways by Capra and his writers.
