From James Clarke, Acting Principal New Health Centre Attendance & Achievement Recovering Student Leaders and Student Council Initiatives 12PEO Fundraising for Salvation Army On Monday 8 June at dawn we held the whakatuweratanga (blessing) of this new facility for our three DHB Nurses and the Doctor who is here one day a week. This will provide illness prevention services as well as consultation and assistance for those students who are unwell at school. • Attendance has returned to the same level as pre Lockdown. • While students’ achievement is not at the level we would expect at this stage of the year, it is gradually improving. • The focus and concentration in classes is at a very good level in the College, owing to the concern students have for their achievement this year and in response teachers are delivering as much recovery and catch up work as possible. Student Leaders have taken the messages from the recent assemblies and have been visiting each of the Tutor Groups with the following message to lead discussions around our behaviour in classtime and our behaviour at break times. Rosehill College is your school. Your school is a place where we respect each other, we all feel safe, we help each other and we focus on our learning. At your school we do not accept or tolerate behaviour that makes others feel unsafe or disrespected because we don’t like it when others make us feel unsafe or disrespected. All of us together, you, your mates, other students, the student leaders and the teachers are what makes your school a great place to be. How we ALL act and behave towards each other is what will create the positive environment we all want. YOU need to play your part by refusing to be involved with inappropriate behaviour and helping to discourage inappropriate behaviour in others. We are very proud of the Student Leaders and excited that they have chosen to support students and the School in such a beneficial and progressive way. Junior House Leaders supported the discussion in their Tutor Groups. The day began with the class being split into two groups and collecting water samples from Pahurehure Inlet and Slippery Creek. Students then conducted experiments to filter and neutralise their samples. After interval, students were challenged to create a shelter using only dry spaghetti pasta and string, which was a lot of fun. Students enjoyed building their shelters and eating dry pasta. The strength of their shelters was tested and unfortunately, most shelters could not withstand the weight of the testing. Our final challenge was tent building and our Head of House, Mr Fraser came along to help with it. The Challenge Day aimed to target skills such as problem solving, decision making, collaboration and effective teamwork. Overall, the day was a success and students and teachers enjoyed themselves.
